The role of emotional intelligence in enhancing intercultural sensitivitySaberi, Maria Akbar January 2012 (has links)
Emotions have been noted for their crucial role in survival behaviour relating to resistance to cross-cultural ambiguity. Today's globalised multinational corporations (MNCs) have recognised the importance of developing their diverse workforces' intercultural sensitivity (ICS) – a worldview towards cultural difference – as a means of reducing resistance to cross-cultural ambiguity hence maintaining a professional multicultural work environment. However, no studies have yet been made investigating the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in enhancing intercultural sensitivity and simultaneously regulating emotions produced from resistance to cultural difference. Therefore, this study has explored the role of EI in enhancing ICS aiming at increasing the effectiveness of intercultural training within the context of multinational organisations. A theoretical framework was constructed presenting the idea of EI entry-points into intercultural sensitivity and resistance to difference. Through an inductive research approach, a chosen multinational airline company's flight attendants were targeted with in-depth semi-structured interviews. Grounded theory analysis was applied. The analysis resulted in the development of a grounded emotional-cognitive intercultural adaptation process together with three adaptive cognitive states. These were named: Learn, Understand, and Know. Each cognitive state was noted to be associated with a particular emotional state that causes the interacting individual to shift into the relevant cognitive state. The emotions surprise and curiosity were found to be associated with Learn while empathy was found to be associated with Understand, and finally acceptance was found to be associated with Know. The research results strongly support the proposed EI entry-points within the grounded emotional-cognitive content of the produced intercultural adaptation process. The results address the research aim regarding the role of EI in enhancing ICS. Through the EI entry-points, ICS is indirectly enhanced through the development of intercultural performance as EI mental abilities are proposed which would regulate one's behaviour towards the three grounded emotional-cognitive intercultural adaptation states. The developed model is suggested to contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of intercultural training. The trainee's intercultural performance could be enhanced through directing the emotional-cognitive dynamics, during intercultural interaction, towards the empirically grounded set of emotional-cognitive states. As linking EI and ICS remains an important and under-explored topic, it is hoped that the findings of this study will present a better understanding of the dynamics of emotions within the context of multinational organisations, as well as the role of EI in enhancing ICS, subsequently leading to further research.

Människor har olika förutsättningar för att hitta i sin köksmiljö beroende på vilket hälsotillstånd som ligger till grund för den enskilde individen. Det finns personer som har ett försämrat arbetsminne på grund av att de fått diagnosen lindrig Alzheimers sjukdom. Idag ger många köksluckor ingen information om innehållet, och i varje enskild individs kök finns det olika objekt beroende på vad som används. Denna studie handlar om att hitta olika former av åtgärder i köksmiljöer för att lättare kunna hitta, det finns en förhoppning av att problemen med att inte hitta kan minska. Att använda datainsamlingstekniker som litteratur, intervjuer, workshop och fokusgrupp ska det gå att få reda på vilka åtgärder som kan fungera. Resultaten visar på att det finns problem, och dessa är tänkt att lösa med olika åtgärdsförslag. De förslag som framkommit som kognitiva stöd är bland annat, öppna planlösningar, individuella bilder och transparanta luckor.

Facility linkages to HIV care and treatment as per entry point at a Norton Health Centre, ZimbabweTungwarara, Nigel Leon 01 1900 (has links)
Effective linkage to HIV care and treatment for all people diagnosed with HIV is crucial if positive treatment outcomes are to be realised. The study used the client records for all those newly diagnosed with HIV through the two entry points for HIV testing between January 2016 and December 2016. The aim of the study was to determine the proportions between the linkages to HIV care and treatment as per entry point for the people diagnosed with HIV at a Norton Health Centre in Zimbabwe. More importantly, the study sought to make recommendations to improve linkage per entry point. This was achieved through determining the proportion of individuals diagnosed with HIV that had documented evidence of linkage to HIV care and treatment by entry point. The study also evaluated the association between the entry point of HIV diagnosis and the linkage to HIV care and treatment.. In total, 239 clients’ records were reviewed who were over the age of 16 years. Overall, 144 (60%) had documented evidence of being linked to HIV care while about 95 (40%) of the client records had no documented evidence of linkage to HIV care. 143(60%) had documented evidence of initiation on antiretroviral therapy (ART) while about 96 (40%) had no documented evidence of initiation on ART. A statistically significant association between entry point for HIV diagnosis and the linkage to HIV care and treatment was demonstrated. A statistically significant higher proportion of females was demonstrated to be linked to HIV care and treatment than for males. The Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) entry point showed higher linkages than OPD and wards entry point. Therefore, there is need to make put measures in place that encourage all clients that are diagnosed with HIV through the various entry points at the health centre to be linked to HIV care and treatment. The study made recommendations based on the findings. It is also recommended that male partners be encouraged to accompany their female expectant partners when attending PMTCT sessions. Youth were found to be lower in terms of linkages and the youth user friendly centre is recommended so as to attract more youths to come for testing. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

Gender relations and the beneficiary: an impact study of the resource mobilisation initiative of Nyimba District Farmers Association as supported by MS ZambiaKirk, Else 29 February 2008 (has links)
The central objective of this dissertation is to gain an understanding of the effect by the market within the household on a specific developmental initiative whose aim was poverty reduction. This dissertation analyses how individuals gain access to resources, and how they enforce their entitlements during the on-going implicit and explicit negotiations inherent in daily rural life.
The research tested the suitability of several concepts previously untested in the southern African context. The concept of hearth-holds, proved valuable as a unit of analysis which recognizes the importance of female-directed social units. The relevance of the fall-back position in terms of locality of kin, as well as perceptions of legitimacy, were crucial in affecting how far they were willing to go and what they felt they could demand in everyday household bargaining situations. The deficiency of using romantic ideas of conjugal relations and equal opportunities to explain practice was apparent.
Spouses strategise within the terms of their conjugal contracts, at times adhering to the dominant patriarchal bargain, at times covertly defying or overtly challenging it, and following another bargain.
Placing women as the custodians of morality, works to the relative advantage of men by isolating women from accessing certain opportunities. Female heads of households, manage to legitimise their access to resources by virtue of being custodians of their children. Custodianship of cash funds, and the dominant decision making model used for resource related decisions in the household, clearly impacted on the relevance of different strategies in the bargaining process. The strategic entry points in this process of reduced transparency and violence were relevant in most households studied. The latter was effective in reinforcing and shaping the conjugal contract, despite in effect breaking it. Drinking facilitated this process by creating a temporary suspension of the rules.
Concrete recommendations for developmental practitioners involve incorporating the hearth-hold concept and promoting the communal planning, budgeting and monitoring approach, as well as to specifically target individuals who need their intra-household bargaining power boosted. A clear policy on affirmative action in gate keeper roles, as well as gender disaggregated documentation of beneficiaries, should be institutionalised. / Development Studies / M.A. (Development Studies)
