This thesis has as its object the Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles formation and production between the years 1963 and 1970 in the cities of Brasília and Rio de Janeiro, and the discussion of these facts in relation to the idea of an emphasis in its environmental aspects. The aim is to verify how the Brasílias perspective, an idea brought up by Mário Pedrosa and Frederico Morais in 1967, and the development of an unfolding of Hélio Oiticicas Environmental Program, can be found and discussed in the artists work, creating an alternative to a restricted vision of his work in the international conceptualism overview. It is possible to conclude, from an analysis of the sources and the concept of environmental art, and from the confrontation with other artists (Piero Manzoni, Yves Klein, Pier Paolo Calzolari and Hélio Oiticica), that exists an approach of Cildo Meireles to the aspects which aim at the production of environments, environmental works and experiences, and that we can consider his work inserted in an environmental poetics, which will be fully accomplished in the Blindhotland series.

Out with the Anthropocene: Art for an Animate EarthKaufman, Tara January 2019 (has links)
Ensnared in but fed up with the inanity of late capitalism and environmental ruin, this thesis examines the ways in which contemporary artists are working against the grain of the dominant anthropocentric Western culture to seek new pathways out of the so-called Anthropocene. The artists under discussion, Carolina Caycedo, Krista Caballero and Frank Ekeberg, and Natalie Jeremijenko, create participatory projects that simultaneously critique the entanglement of human practices and loss of species and encourage their audiences (and the larger global public) to formulate new relationships with our fellow Earthly critters and our damaged ecosystems. This research takes a leaf from new materialist methodologies and the work of scholars such as Donna Haraway and T. J. Demos to consider how artists have deviated from the accustomed Western humanist notion of the individual as separate from nature to instead become recognizant of our critical role as one animal among many imbricated in a remarkably complex but endangered system of exchange. With its implications of collectivity and becoming-with each other, audience participatory art lends itself well to this thinking. The three case studies therefore work through the advantages and potential limitations of art serving as a medium for small-scale social change at a moment when larger global movements toward ecological sustainability are absent. The discussed participatory projects make apparent that there does exist an elasticity to human thought that can open potential futures in which the human species is less toxic and more responsive to the multifarious animacies that mill about this imperiled planet. / Art History

Arte e meio urbano. Elementos de formação da estética extramuros no Brasil / Art and urban space. Constituent elements of extramuros aesthetics in BrazilFuregatti, Sylvia Helena 08 October 2007 (has links)
This research argues about the constituent aspects of the praxis and discursive forms in contemporary artistic action enrolled in opened and urban Brazilian space. Considering recent decades, post to 1960, projects, texts, works of art has been analyzed, as well as cultural and urban important contexts to reach the verification of the relationship among the actual circuit agents. The intention is to refine the aptness of the contemporary art object to the space studying these points: its specific urban elements; the new public senses due to this kind of work in our time and the mobility of its characters roles that, in this set, collaborate to the construction of these aesthetic and artistic boundaries. Beginning with ambient experiences by Hélio Oiticia, Artur Barrio, beside others, to get to multiple forms of public and urban art, caused by their encounter with the megalopolis, as presented by José Resende, Mônica Nador, Ricardo Basbaum, each chapter analyses the strategies that take Art to an Extramuros state.

Patrimoines irréguliers en France et en Italie : origines, artification, regard contemporain / Irregular heritages in France and in Italy : origins, artification, contemporary wievTrapani, Roberta 28 June 2016 (has links)
Since the 1930s, a slow process of « artification » invested living spaces decorated bytheir own inhabitants with improvised techniques. Originally regarded as localcuriosities, these sites have been introduced to the artistic world by the Surrealists, whobegan their documentation. In the post war period, they have been seen with increasingenthusiasm in some artistic circles and then have been linked to mediumistic art, naiveart, art brut, outsider art, fantastic architecture, among others, creating a plethora ofdefinitions. Irregular environments have often been considered as the spontaneousexpression of inner impulses, without influence or tradition. This thesis proposes toreturn to the origins of this form of art, revealing the circular movement that connects it,on one hand, to the popular cultures and, on the other hand, to the officials movementsof the history of contemporary art. It also examines the conditions of its own reception,in a context dominated until the 1970s by the primitivist paradigm, before of focusing onthe many initiatives that, since the late 1970s, brought a renewed look. All along, irregular environments have been questioned in their ability to combine fundamentalconcepts - art, architecture, culture, marginality, ornamental, among others - and to betaken as an operational tool for a form of artistic or cultural authenticity.

Green Power ! : does ecological art have a measurable social impact? : plastic and militant formulations, from the 1960s to 1986Hermann, Isabelle 05 December 2015 (has links)
Peuvent-ils faire l’objet d’études d’impact ? Selon quelle méthodologie et avec quelles précautions ? / In the economic, social and political environments of the 1960s, themass media evolution led photography and television reports to take over the representation of nature and landscape. Until then, the illustration of nature and landscape had been the preserve of artists. The new trend was to move away from the idyllic representation of the natural world in order to reveal nature as it really is, alive and fragile, a nature in which man plays an integral role while also posing a threat to its integrity.Landscapes started to feature ecological disasters such as: decimated forests, clouds of dioxin billowing from chemical reactors, oil spills in the sea or also cement work, – in essence, familiar images that strike the imagination. Such representation of landscape was in itself a challenge. Concepts connected to the idea of nature, such as a global climate, pollution, scale effect, and long term impact, introduced an element of immateriality.Various strategies to create visual and plastic representations were initiated across the world; a number of artists renewed their approach to nature. They envisaged it in its physical and biological processes, and addressed it as a series of ecosystems and locations that need to be rehabilitated. Concrete actions in the public sphere have sometimes produced significant results: photos, objects, performances, environments, as well as draft communiqués, declarations, manifestos, open letters and the participation in associations or political parties. The presentation of the body of plastic formulation and/or militant acts raises the issue of their impact. Do they represent the renewal of the social role of the artist, or are they just an utopian vision? How do their authors envisage them? Are their effects measurable? Can it be the subject of environmental studies? What methodology to use? And what are its limitations ?

Previous issue date: 2009-09-16 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / This dissertation is an account of a teaching experience held in the subject of Arts in a State Public School in São Paulo, in 2007. It aims at investigating the aspects
related to the concept of sense of place used together with the pedagogical situations performed. In order to do so, some relevant aspects related to the theme of place , such as the school location and the territoriality from the Arts teaching point-of-view. Said considerations have come up in this paper due to didactic actuation in context. The sense of place approach is expressed as a transforming ideal, in the sense it suggests an appropriation of the environment where we live and performs a trajectory of expressive intimacy turning a location into a place. It was evidenced that the complexity of the sense of place content is due to the diversity of areas of knowledge, to which one is exposed, and the boldness of approaching the topic through teaching experience, resulting in an inviting introduction to a vast
territory.
