Preek as kunsvorm / The sermon as an art form

Preller, Willem Petrus Lubbe 06 1900 (has links)
In a sermon form and content are one. Both aspects form part of the theological theory of preaching. This theoretical survey investigates one of the various literary forms through which the biblical writers attempted to communicate the intention of the biblical text in the most effective way. Each of these forms possesses a distinctive communicative character. The development of modern literary theory since the eighties of the twentieth century was a propulsive force leading to the conviction that the Bible was also a collection of religious literature. This conviction implied that the intention of the biblical text could be more clearly understood in a theological justified manner within the historical context by using insights gained from other literature. Acknowledged literary art forms adhering to the emotive as well as the logic-analytical are embraced as such. In this study the sermon as an art form is limited to narrative preaching, developed as a concept; theoretically described and placed within the modern homiletical theory as a suitable component. Results are obtained by means of a comparative study of mutual features that are distinctive to acknowledged art forms in the modern theory of art; narrative art forms in modern literature theory specifically in the modern Afrikaans novel, as well as the narrative form of preaching in the modern homiletical theory. The modern homiletical theory is orientated within the communicative acts theory as meta-theory focusing on dialogical communication which promotes meaning through the involvement of the observer. The conclusions reached indicate that the sermon as an art form can be evaluated and justified within the modem homiletical theory. Taken up in this theory, it can prove significant in communicating the Christian message to the listeners in a convincing rather than compulsive manner. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D.Th. Exodus and black theology : an investigation

Le Roux, Zacharias Petrus 06 1900 (has links)
Black Theology uses the Exodus episode as its locus classicus for its view of God' s preferential option for the poor and the oppressed. The purpose of the dissertation is to determine to what extent Black Theology is scripturally justified in doing so. The investigation concludes that - i) the use of a praxis 'claimed to be Christian' in the hermeneutic of Black Theology, becomes questionable and unconvincing in that there is an illogical vacillation between a self-determined praxis-horizon and a text-horizon and that, ii ) when some aspects of Black Theology are measured using constraint criteria suggested by Kelsey, Black Theology exceeds the limits of acceptability by taking the exodus event as the locus classicus for the slogan that God is always on the side of the poor and the oppressed. While for some Black theology is indeed an important new stage in theologizing it must however be remembered that liberation theology, in Africa at least, is still in its infancy. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / Th.M. The text will be noted from the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint, when compared with the Greek text of Matthew. Therefore, the first century Jewish context will be studied to understand more fully the environment in wich the evangelist was possible to write his gospel. The techniques of interpretation considered in parallel with the typology of greatest importance to this work are: three rabbinical techniques, that is, pesher, midrah haggadah and gezerah shavah, and three other techniques eminently Christian interpretation, that is, double-fulfillment, sensus plenior, typology. Finally, the comparative study of first century Judaism and interpretation techniques will result the choice of typological interpretation, but without a radical rupture with the other schools, but on the contrary, conflicting with some notes of the Dead Sea Scrolls and his apocalypticism. The typological interpretation will deal with the similarities between the Old and the New Testament texts, for a more comprehensive understanding of the scenario. Will be considered three common themes of the two texts that establish a relation between them, that is, the geography, the Gentiles and the interpretation of light / Esta dissertação tem por foco apresentar o método hermenêutico tipológico como ferramenta proposta para compreender a leitura realizada pelo evangelho de Mateus 4.15-16 da profecia de Isaías 8.23 9.1 [TM].

REAÇÕES LITERÁRIAS À CULTURA DE RECIPROCIDADE DO ANTIGO MUNDO MEDITERRÂNEO: UMA LEITURA DA LINGUAGEM ECONÔMICA DO EVANGELHO DE MATEUS / Literary Reactions to theculture of reciprocity of the ancient mediterranean word: a Reading of the Mattews gospel economic language

We try to demonstrate the importance of this Matthew s language feature for the development of Gospels discourse, and to understand it, we deal with the approximations between this speech and some socioeconomic models known in the real world of the great urban centers of that time. Along the discussion, we conclude that the author of Matthews Gospel is part of an embracing debate between new judaisms that kept conflictual relations with the Greco-Roman domain and their cultural heritage. Matthew, in particular, rejects the complete ownership of clientelist patterns in interpersonal relations of the disciples of Jesus, while also appropriates the foreign socioeconomic model to develop its religious imaginary. We argue that in Matthew, God takes, as a character, the features of a divine patron who protects and benefits its faithful clients, and in retribution, they should do good deeds for the poor. However, despite this vertical relationship religious be desirable, the gospel rejects other clientelistic ties that rating the human being, and sees them as a betrayal to the first sovereign patron.

A PALAVRA DE JAVÉ EM JEREMIAS 7,1 8,3: UMA ANÁLISE DA PROFECIA COMO PORTADORA DE UM CONFLITO SOCIAL ORIUNDO DA COBRANÇA EXCESSIVA DE TRIBUTO / The Word of Yahweh in Jeremiah 7,1 8,3: An Analysis of Prophecy as Carrier of a Social Conflict Arising from the Excessive Tribute Collection,

The material arranged along this research is intended to be an aid to understanding some texts from the prophet Jeremiah. Assuming that the text has a link with the society in which it was created and making use of exegetical methodology, carried out a historical-sociological analysis of the word of Yahweh in Jeremiah from 7,1 8,3 as carrier of a social conflict arising from excessive tribute collection on a Judahite society markedly tributary. It seeks, through this, the meaning of the text within the historical setting likely that permeated the social writing. For this, it is necessary to research the primary aspects involving both the book of Jeremiah, especially the controversial caps. 7,1 8,3, as well as the question of modern research study about this magnificent work. It is also worth highlighting the semiotic concept of sociological poetics that seeks to study the causal interaction between literature and the social environment. Moreover, it evaluates the social historical context of the literary unit target of our research, situating it in its likely social and historical context, determining the date, the political scene and the production mode current at this time. Not forgetting, however, the triggering factor of social conflict and the role of religion in this scenario. Furthermore, it examines the meaning of specific texts or completed literary units (pericopes) present in caps. 7,1 8,3, with the assumption the theoretical model of the tributary production mode and the steps of the social-historical exegesis. The social analytical mechanism of the tributary production mode will serve as a tool for analysis of socioeconomic status, such analysis is focused on the external components incorporated in the collection, not in its editorial history, but in its social formation.

From St Bernard to the Bible, from the Bible to St Bernard : a research itinerary

Mellerin, Laurence 18 January 2018 (has links)
First of all, studies carried out within the framework of the BIBLINDEX project, an online index of scriptural quotations in the Early Christian Literature, are gathered. They aim at renewing the historiography on the reception of the Scriptures by statistical analysis. The methodological aspects – identification, expression, delimitation, characterization, queries and visualization – are discussed, then the defined method is applied to several corpora of the first centuries: the works of Irenaeus, Jerome; the book of Qohelet as read by the Fathers. The corpus written by the "last" of them, Bernard of Clairvaux, is the subject of the two following parts: archetypal indeed, due to the richness and the complexity of its implementations of the biblical material, this corpus lends itself particularly well an in-depth application of the investigation methods developed for BIBLINDEX, supplemented by textometric approaches. Some theological, literary and historical inquiries of the Cistercian’s work are first presented, which come along with the publication of his complete works in the collection Sources Chrétiennes and illustrate several types of biblical practices, such as constituting a controversial arsenal in epistolary conflicts; structuring a logical, both philosophical and theological, argumentation; establishing a spiritual geography using interpretations of Hebrew names. Finally, the sketch of a synthetic study of Bernard’s Bible is given, which would be based on the methods previously defined to improve our knowledge of the saint’s relationship to tradition and the role of scriptural assimilation in his writing strategies.

Costa, Julia Cristina de Lima 26 February 2016 (has links)
Submitted by Maike Costa (maiksebas@gmail.com) on 2017-03-27T11:54:06Z No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivo total.pdf: 5677167 bytes, checksum: 190ac8e16c2faee3a07e84c6c097ac3e (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2017-03-27T11:54:06Z (GMT). / In the last decades, it has been attempted to approach the diverse areas of knowledge and to favor ample and efficient dialogues among the diverse knowledges among the different cultures which, in the case of the study of the language, it has been protruded, among others, the dialogue with religious researchers, especially in our case, with Theology. In this sense, it has been attempted to lay in dialogical relation two fields of knowledge: Enunciation Theory – on the Bakhtin Circle’s studies – and Theology, notably, New Testament (henceforth NT) Hermeneutics and Biblical Exegesis. In this regard, it has been established the following problematic: how the Bakhtin Circle’s Enunciation Theory might contribute on theoretical-analytical principles in the construction of the New Testament Hermeneutics and Biblical Exegesis? In other words, how the elements of Bakhtin Circle’s Enunciation Theory may lead the exegetes to deeper biblical exegesis and analysis on New Testament. Thus, we intend, in this research, to find out those theoretical-analytic principles and their contribution for readers/exegetes in the interpretation and comprehension of biblical utterances on a discursive-enunciative perspective. As the object of study, it was developed a qualitative research with interpretative focus through bibliographical and documental research. The corpus is constituted by two New Testament Biblical Exegesis that were elaborated by Theology Course post-graduate students. To support the research, it was resorted the Bakhtin Circle’s Enunciation Theory, principally what was studied by Bakhtin/Voloshinov (1988 [1929]) and Bakhtin (2010 [1935], 2011 [1975]), besides the contribution of works developed by Brazilian researchers such as Fiorin (2012, 2014), Francelino (2007), Sobral (2006, 2009), Faraco (2005, 2009), among others that work with researches on enunciative study of the language. Besides these theoretical support, it was used the Hermeneutic based on the assumptions of Grondin (1999, 2012), Zabatiero (2006, 2009, 2011), Vanhoozer (2005), Lopes (2007) and Sousa (2014, 2015). As a result, it was established three aspects that evidenced Bakhtin Circle’s presuppose to the construction of New Testament Biblical Exegesis: (1) the conception of the dialogic language nature, (2) the heterodiscourse as a stylistic-enunciative phenomenon, and (3) the studies of discourse genre might orient the reading practices and the biblical text interpretation, once they are the own manners of interaction of every human language activities and, thus, permit the necessary relation that (re)articulate the questions and the manner of comprehending the texts and the world/life views of symbolic practices.

A hermenêutica de Paul Ricoeur: da poética à teoria da narrativa e à identidade narrativa / The hermeneuthical theory of Paul Ricoeur: from Aristoteles\' Poetics to narrativity and narrative indentity

Paula Frassinete de Queiros Siqueira 02 June 2009 (has links)
This argument holds, in a first moment, a research on the linkage and dialogue that Paul Ricoeur establishes with other philosophical trends, especially those made by Wilhelm Dilthey, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamaer and Edmund Husserl, with emphasis on the phenomenological method. At that time, it also shows the dialogue that Paul Ricoeur maintains with Naberts reflective philosophy and the critics made to the philosophies of the self, in particular the Cartesian Cogito. Thus presents the main concepts of hermeneutic philosophy, since Friedrich Shcleiermacher, its principal precursor, until Hans-Georg Gadamer, with emphasis on the contribution that Paul Ricoeur offers for this field. Later, this work examines the application done by Paul Ricoeur of the concepts of his hermeneutic at the exegesis done at Aristotles Poetics, precisely the mimesis ternary, Muthos and katharsis. Then it shows the reinscription that Ricoeur promotes of his results on a theory of narrative, which he calls \"narrative meta-category. This work highlights this meta-category, monitoring only the development promoted by Ricoeur giving rise to the fiction narrative. Then examines these concepts, which address for the establishment of the \"hermeneutics of self\" and the core is the narrative identity notion. After that, this work takes ownership, in a gadamerian sense, of notion promoting an approach with the fictional universe of Grande Sertão Veredas, from João Guimarães Rosa. Finally, very briefly, presents a summary of the main ethical consequences, the Aristotelian sense, of that notion.

Le papyrus de Derveni : de la formation du cosmos à la genèse des mots : introduction, édition critique, traduction, notes et étude monographique des fragments du papyrus / The Derveni papyrus : from the constitution of the Cosmos to the genesis of the Words : introduction, critical edition, translation, notes and a monographical study of the fragments of the papyrus

Since his discovery in 1962, the Derveni Papyrus, the most ancient manuscript of Europe, has rase full of major questions about the transmission, the interpretation and the function of the orphic texts. The Derveni Papyrus offers us an emblematic testimony about the influence of Presocratic Philosophy on the orphic doctrines. This thesis is the first french critical edition of the Derveni Papyrus with a critical apparatus and notes on the text. This research paper also provides a monographic study of this document. We especially focused our attention on the orphic poem quoted by the author of the Derveni Papyrus, on the exegetical technics he employed and on the philosophical doctrines he proposed. We particularly compared the cosmological and philosophical theories of the Derveni Papyrus author with that of Heraclitus of Ephesus, Anaxagoras of Clazomenae, Diogenes of Apollonia and Archelaus of Athens.

Saint Augustin d’Hippone, Epistulae ad Romanos Inchoata Expositio (Début de commentaire de l’épître aux Romains) : édition, traduction et commentaire / St. Augustine of Hippo, Epistulae ad Romanos Inchoata Expositio (Beginning of a Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans) : edition, translation and commentary.

Hadas, Daniel 17 January 2015 (has links)
Between AD 394 and 396, St. Augustine of Hippo undertook the project of writing a commentary on St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. He completed only one book of this, providing a commentary on first seven verses of the epistle, along with an examination of the question of the unforgivable blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. I present this text here. My thesis begins with a general introduction, which situates the work in its historical and theological context, and discusses its reception. I then provide a critical edition (with French translation) of the text: the edition, based on 25 manuscripts and 5 printed editions, is preceded by detailed presentation of sources, a stemma with supporting arguments, and a commentary on editorial decisions. Finally, I provide a detailed commentary on the whole work, whose main aims are to elucidate the text’s difficult passages, to note its linguistic particularities, and to explain its contents with reference to the Augustinian corpus and patristic tradition.
