Rech Junior, Lourival January 2007 (has links)
Regulations for engine exhaust emissions control, recently introduced in the USA and Europe, demand engine testing, known as PLT – Production Line Testing. The present work suggests a systematic approach for implementation of such a manufacturer production line testing. The opportunity of integrating complementary methods for quality monitoring and improvement, considering both, regulations and user requirements, was identified. The proposed approach was applied for an engine manufacturer during introduction of a production line, allowing a successful implementation of PLT. The complementary quality monitoring allowed the identification of additional information, such as adjustment offset trends, that would have been unnoticed by only applying the methods as demanded by the regulations, and thus helped to prevent production of non-conforming products. An optimization based on data from compulsory tests was performed, resulting in quality improvements at no additional costs.

Characterization of diesel emissions with respect to semi-volatile organic compounds in South African platinum mines and other confined environments

Geldenhuys, Genna-Leigh January 2014 (has links)
Concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in platinum mine environments are likely to be higher than in ambient air due to the use of diesel machinery in confined environments. PAHs may be present in gaseous or particulate phases each of which have different human health impacts due to their ultimate fate in the body. The sampling of both phases was made possible by means of small, portable denuder sampling devices consisting of two polydimethylsiloxane multi-channel traps connected in series and separated by a quartz fibre filter. Thermal desorption coupled with two dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (TD-GCxGC-ToFMS) was employed to analyse samples from three different platinum mines. The underground environments revealed that PAHs were predominantly found in the gaseous phase with naphthalene and mono-methylated derivatives being detected in the highest concentrations ranging from 0.15 – 8.73 μg.m-3. Similarly higher gas phase PAH loading was found in the Daspoort Tunnel. The particle bound PAHs underground were found in the highest concentrations at the Load Haul Dump (LHD) vehicle exhaust with dominance of fluoranthene and pyrene and concentrations ranged from 0.52-109.60 ng.m-3. This work highlighted the need to characterise both gaseous and particulate phases of PAHs in order to assess occupational exposure and demonstrated the successful application of these portable denuders in the mining environment. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Chemistry / MSc / Unrestricted

Estimation et analyse spatiales des émissions de polluants de transports individualisés : évaluation des performances environnementales d'un Transport à la Demande / Spatial estimating and analyse of exhaust emissions from individual transports : Assessment of the environmental performance of a demand responsive transport

Prud'homme, Julie 25 October 2013 (has links)
The Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) is a transportation system which offers a collective use of motor vehicles, in opposite of personal vehicles use. Between the functioning of taxis and classical public transport, it offers a service that is flexible in time and space like taxis, promoting the sharing of vehicles, like public transports. It is why it is present as a solution for a sustainable mobility. In the minds, DRT are often associated to a reduction of exhaust emissions and so are developed in rural areas. However, is grouping travellers enough to make DRT gainful for environment? In this doctoral research, an assessment tool of the environmental impact of DRT systems has been developed. To ensure that choice is sustainable in the sense of sustainable development, the service must be adapted to the local context by minimising emissions of substances in the near atmosphere while maintaining a sufficient quality of service when competing against personal vehicle use. A parameter directly involved in pollutant emissions, is often overlooked in approaches: the road network. We therefore search for identify laws and thresholds relating to pollutant emissions generated by the functioning of a DRT: how the road network does it affect the environmental performance of DRT or on the skill to grouping customers in vehicles? Depending on what service features (time windows allowed)? More generally, is that the optimization of the same type of DRT is equivalent to a road network to another, from the perspective of pollutant emissions? As any integrated tool to perform this task is available, we have developed a geomatics processing to estimate the quantities of pollutants emitted on road sections within the particular functioning of DRT and to cartography it to analyse their spatial distribution. This tool combines a GIS to an exhaust emissions model that we have adapted to our questioning (GREEN-DRT).

Modeling and simulation of vehicle emissions for the reduction of road traffic pollution

Rahimi, Mostafa 03 February 2023 (has links)
The transportation sector is responsible for the majority of airborne particles and global energy consumption in urban areas. Its role in generating air pollution in urban areas is even more critical, as many visitors, commuters and citizens travel there daily for various reasons. Emissions released by transport fleets have an exhaust (tailpipe) and a non-exhaust (brake wears ) origin. Both exhaust and non-exhaust airborne particles can have destructive effects on the human cardiovascular and respiratory systems and even lead to premature deaths. This dissertation aims to estimate the amount of exhaust and brake emissions in a real case study by proposing an innovative methodology. For this purpose, different levels of study have been introduced, including the subsystem level, the system level, the environmental level and the suprasystem level. To address these levels, two approaches were proposed along with a data collection process. First, a comprehensive field survey was conducted in the area of Buonconsiglio Castle and data was collected on traffic and non-traffic during peak hours. Then, in the first approach, a state-of-the-art simulation-based method was presented to estimate the amount of exhaust emissions generated and the rate of fuel consumption in the case study using the VISSIM traffic microsimulation software and Enviver emission modeler at the suprasystem level. In order to calculate the results under different mobility conditions, a total of 18 scenarios were defined based on changes in vehicle speeds and the share of heavy vehicles (HV%) in the modal split. Subsequently, the scenarios were accurately modelled in the simulation software VISSIM and repeated 30 times with a simulation runtime of three hours. The results of the first approach confirmed the simultaneous effects of considering vehicle speed and HV % on fuel consumption and the amount of exhaust emissions generated. Furthermore, the sensitivity of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption to variations in vehicle speed was found to be much higher than HV %. In other words, the production of NOx and VOC emissions can be increased by up to 20 % by increasing the maximum speed of vehicles by 10 km/h. Conversely, increasing the HV percentage at the same speed does not seem to produce a significant change. Furthermore, increasing the speed from 30 km/h to 50 km/h increased CO emissions and fuel consumption by up to 33%. Similarly, a reduction in speed of 20 or 10 km/h with a 100% increase in HV resulted in a 40% and 27% decrease in exhaust emissions per seat, respectively. In the second approach, a novel methodology was proposed to estimate the number of brake particles in the case study. To achieve this goal, a downstream approach was proposed starting from the suprasystem level (microscopic traffic simulation models in VISSIM) and using a developed mathematical vehicle dynamics model at the system level to calculate the braking torques and angular velocities of the front and rear wheels, and proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) as a brake emission model, which has been appropriately trained and validated using emission data collected through more than 1000 experimental tribological tests on a reduced-scale dynamometer at the subsystem level (braking system). Consideration of this multi-level approach, from tribological to traffic-related aspects, is necessary for a realistic estimation of brake emissions. The proposed method was implemented on a targeted vehicle, a dominant SUV family car in the case study, considering real driving conditions. The relevant dynamic quantities of the targeted vehicle (braking torques and angular velocities of the wheels) were calculated based on the vehicle trajectory data such as speed and deceleration obtained from the traffic microsimulation models and converted into braking emissions via the artificial neural network. The total number of brake emissions emitted by the targeted vehicles was predicted for 10 iterations route by route and for the entire traffic network. The results showed that a large number of brake particles (in the order of billions of particles) are released by the targeted vehicles, which significantly affect the air quality in the case study. The results of this dissertation provide important information for policy makers to gain better insight into the rate of exhaust and brake emissions and fuel consumption in metropolitan areas and to understand their acute negative impacts on the health of citizens and commuters.

Petrauskas, Ramūnas 02 June 2011 (has links)
The national emission ceilings set for four pollutants – sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and ammonia (NH3). Spread in the air of these compounds from cogeneration plants, when planning economic activities on the environmental assessment, it is based solely on data presented by cogeneration units producers. The aim of this work – to investigate exhaust emissions, after biogas combustion in cogeneration unit. In order to evaluate the emissions from biogas cogenerator combustion into the environment, experimental and theoretical studies are made. Theoretical study calculates emissions from biogas burning cogenerator, in the atmospheric of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions. Experimental studies were carried out measurements of exhaust emissions NOx, SO2, CO and biogas composition of CH4, H2S. In this work are the similarities and differences between experimental and theoretical researches results.

Design of a novel rotary compact power pack for the series hybrid electric vehicle : design and simulation of a compact power pack consisting of a novel rotary engine and outer rotor induction machine for the series hybrid electric vehicle powertrain

Amirian, Hossein January 2010 (has links)
Hybrid electric vehicles significantly reduce exhaust emissions and increase fuel economy. Power packs are the most fundamental components in a series powertrain configuration of a hybrid vehicle, which produce the necessary power to run the vehicle. The aim of this project is to design a compact power pack for a series hybrid vehicle, using virtual prototyping. The hybrid electric vehicle characteristics and configurations are analysed, followed by an explanation of the principles of induction machines. A new type of rotary induction machine with an outer rotor construction is designed to be coupled with the novel rotary internal combustion engine with rotating crankcase in order to form the compact power unit for the hybrid vehicle. The starting and generation performance of the designed machine is analysed by an electric machine simulator, called JMAG. ADVISOR software is studied and utilised to simulate the overall vehicle performance, employing different categories of power packs in the powertrain. Results show that the proposed compact power pack has the best performance in terms of fuel economy, emissions and battery charging compared to the existing power unit options. Over the city cycle, fuel economy is increased by up to 47 % with emission reduced by up to 36 % and over the highway cycle, fuel economy is increased by up to 69 % with emission reduced by up to 42 %.

Engine Performance and Exhaust Emissions of a Diesel Engine From Various Biodiesel Feedstock

Santos, Bjorn Sanchez 2009 December 1900 (has links)
Increasing fuel prices, stricter government policies, and technological developments made it possible to seek for renewable alternatives, called biofuels, to petroleum fuel. Biodiesel, a biofuel that is produced from chemically mixing animal fat, vegetable oils, or recycled restaurant grease with alcohol and catalyst, is gaining popularity in recent years as a substitute for petroleum diesel. Ninety percent (90%) of U.S. biodiesel industry makes use of soybean oil as its feedstock. However, soybean oil alone cannot meet such a huge demand on biofuel production. Hence, it is important to identify and get more information about other feedstocks, specifically on its effects on the performance and exhaust emissions of diesel engines. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance and emissions of two diesel engines operating on different biodiesel fuels (i.e. canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, peanut oil, and chicken fat) and compare them to the performance and emissions when the engine is operated on soybean oil-based biodiesel and petroleum-based diesel. Results indicated that an engine operating on biodiesel generates a little less power and torque at any given speed than one running on diesel. Such power and torque loss were attributed to the biodiesel's lower energy content. The lower heating value (energy content) of biodiesel can be reflected in the specific fuel consumption, i.e., to generate the same power, more biodiesel is needed. The reduction in torque and power of less than 10% indicates that in some cases biodiesel has better combustion than diesel. Unfortunately, the high efficiency of combustion may give rise to increased combustion temperature which may lead to higher exhaust emissions. The gradual decrease in the total hydrocarbon and CO2 emissions, as blends were increased from B20 to B100, was also found to be an indication of better combustion using biodiesel fuels than petroleum diesel. However, NOx emissions were higher, predominantly at low speeds for most biodiesel and blends and therefore may require some additives or engine modifications/or adjustments to equalize the NOx emissions of diesel. Other emissions particularly SO2 were lower than standards require.
