EXPLORING WAYS TO SUPPORT PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES / SUPPORTING PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIESMonika Novak Pavlic January 2022 (has links)
Family-centred service (FCS), which acknowledges the importance of family engagement in therapeutic processes and focuses on needs of all family members, is increasingly being recognized as an optimal care delivery model for families of children with developmental disabilities. However, services for families are oftentimes ‘child-centric’, wherein family members are seen as partners in therapy or care delivery only, while their own or family needs are not addressed. This arises from the lack of awareness of complex and highly individual family needs by professionals with whom they interact, but also from a significant lack of services oriented toward parent-specific needs in current delivery models. This thesis aims to address this knowledge gap and provides solutions for parental support in the context of pediatric developmental rehabilitation, which might also be applicable to other settings (e.g., community, education). The objectives of this thesis were: (a) to conduct a systematic review synthesizing randomized controlled trials aiming to address parents’ physical, psychological and socioeconomic well-being; (b) to perform cross-cultural and language adaptation and proof-of-concept pilot exploration of an innovative, strengths-based support program ‘ENabling VISions And Growing Expectation’ (ENVISAGE) for parents of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities in Croatia; (c) to refine the Croatian version of the program according to the pilot study results; (d) to run the first set of ENVISAGE workshops and evaluate their impact on Croatian parents’ perception of self, their child with a disability and their family; and (e) to learn about participants’ experience with the program. The findings show that interventions aiming to improve parents’ well-being have limited but promising effectiveness on parents’ health and well-being outcomes. ENVISAGE has proven to be a comprehensive, acceptable, usable, feasible and impactful program for parents of children with developmental disabilities in Croatia. / Dissertation / Doctor of Science (PhD) / Parents raising children with developmental disabilities have unique challenges in their parenting role, which might impact their health and well-being. However, there has been very little focus on parental and family needs in the context of pediatric developmental rehabilitation. Parents are often expected to focus on their child’s issues when their own support needs are usually also significant. This thesis aimed to address this research and practice gap through: a) evaluating best quality evidence on how to support parental well-being; and b) piloting a novel ‘early intervention’ support program for parents of children with disabilities, ‘ENabling VISions And Growing Expectation’ (ENVISAGE), in a new culture and language setting, Croatia. These findings have implications for spreading awareness of innovative programs to improve well-being of parents of children with developmental disabilities in various sectors (e.g., healthcare, community).

Previous issue date: 2014-05-22 / Institutions of higher learning (IHL) in Brazil have suffered from idleness in classroom courses, mainly due to the higher number of places offered in the last ten years. Many IHL consider the distance education, and regionalization strategy that this method enables, a way to maintain or increase their margins. However, the development and operation of these courses require expertise not normally found in traditional classroom structure of institutions. Thus, most managers of IHL find some difficulty in financial planning of the distance education project and its feasibility analysis, this occurs because of the complexity and the amount of variables that impact the definition of income and all expenses, including items from tutors to reviewers, editors, cameramen etc. In this context, this study presents a complete breakdown of the variables that influence the financial outcomes of a distance learning course. The assumptions of the variables are divided into five groups: Organizational Management, Content Development, Information Technology, Mentoring and Market, and its valuation distributed among income, investments and costing. Further it also performed simulations and analysis of financial results to a better practical understanding of the model / As Institui????es de Ensino Superior no Brasil v??m sofrendo com a ociosidade nos cursos presenciais, fruto, principalmente, do aumento expressivo do n??mero de vagas nos ??ltimos dez anos. Determining the feasibility of using mobile phones to strengthen the information management of preventative health care in South AfricaSnyders, Frans Johannes 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEng)-- Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa’s health sector has not yet shown enough improvement to reach the Millennium Development Goals related to health. One of the problem areas is the low infant and child vaccination coverage in certain areas of South Africa. The use of mobile phones in health care (mHealth) has the potential to strengthen the primary health care system through improved information management. A mobile health solution for vaccination (MHSV) can be used to improve information management of vaccinations, which in turn can improve vaccination coverage. However, the feasibility of implementing such an MHSV in the South African context is unknown.
This study therefore investigates the feasibility of using mobile phones to improve information management for child vaccinations in South Africa. Feasibility is determined by using a feasibility framework together with business model development.
The feasibility framework, which is informed by a literature study, surveys and a case study, determines the feasibility of an MHSV in terms of human factors, technical feasibility, information management, policies and ethics, and economics. It is found that an MHSV is feasible in South Africa, although certain areas pose challenges that will have to be considered.
Complementing the feasibility framework, business models are developed to suggest possible ways in which an MHSV can be deployed in South Africa. These models build on the results from the feasibility framework and are developed using Osterwalder’s business model canvas. The effect of the National Health Insurance (NHI) on these business models is also examined.
In order to validate the feasibility framework and business models, interviews were held with experts in health care and mobile phone solutions. These interviews show that the research is valid and that the feasibility framework and business models can be generalised to the wider field of mHealth solutions.

No. of bitstreams: 0 / Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-22T14:12:07Z (GMT).
