Don't mess with a witch

Souza, Felipe Antônio de January 2016 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Inglês: Estudos Linguísticos e Literários, Florianópolis, 2016. / Made available in DSpace on 2016-09-20T04:12:00Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 339972.pdf: 3405130 bytes, checksum: a2940e8052a6b292ebc1c91bcde2c7a0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016 / Abstract : Considering the increasing media interest and the creation of trends in relation to the theme of witches, the present study aims at analyzing representations of witches in recent media. For that, the research analyses an episode from the hit TV series American Horror Story: Coven (2013), the video game Bayonetta (2009) and fashion advertisements from the alternative clothing brand Kill Star. Grounded on a critical discourse analysis perspective, the study investigates the context of situation, forms of nomination of social actors (van Leeuwen, 2008), power relations in discourse with the aim of transitivity system (Halliday, 1985), and power relations in visuals, with the support of the grammar of visual design (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2006) as well as gender and issues of subcultures. Results suggest that the new image of the witch sets a break from ancient representations and no longer carries social stigmatization; on the contrary, it implies power and free will, since the power of witches does not rely only on magical skills. However, the use of discursive frameworks also demonstrate that these representations, despite being constructed as powerful and independent, still perpetuate some gendered notions in discourse.<br> / Considerando o crescente interesse da mídia e a criação de várias tendências com relação ao tema de bruxas, o presente estudo visa analisar representações de bruxas na mídia recentemente.

Rossi, Maria Jose dos Santos 28 July 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-07-28T13:34:19Z (GMT). Essas duas vertentes se reorganizaram dando origem ao campo profissional / Abstract: This work discusses some issues concerning the formation of the field of the Art of Caring, from the point of view of a native in this very field, who was socialized in it as a professional nurse. I aim to set and explain where I am talking from, as well as my participation in the nursing field and the methodology used to do so. Far from intending to establish a historic linearity, I try to disclose the discontinuation which compound the structure of this field. I have embraced since the emergence of what we call a magical-religious paradigm -in which the hegemonic ideas were the religious ones - until the advent of scientific ideas more concerned with the body, which have arisen as a complex called biological-scientific paradigm, in the second half of the nineteenth century. This work was conceived in three chapters, each one with a pertinent subdivision. On the first one, I have approached the Art of Caring in Europe from the types who arose and were registered in History, such as the wise woman, the witch, the charity sister and the profane nurse, until coming to Florence Nightingale, as the myth of origin of the modem nursing. Herein I search for the chains of tradition as well as the social nexus between the Art of Caring and the woman from the Victorian age in England. Woman's wisdom viewed as the art of caring of life, elaborated around the fecundation of the land and of the women and oriented by the Life/Death axis was transformed into another masculine wisdom - concerning retreating from death and lessening the suffering. This new situation was oriented by another axis, that is: Health/Illness. I have focused on Nightingale, who systematized this field in the mid-nineteenth century and gave origin to the professional nurse. On the second chapter, I have analyzed the struggle of the American nurses for the legalization of the nursing field, by holding many seminars, conferences and making reports which would mark definitely the profession, through the creation of instruments of promotion and exporting them to the world -specially to Latin America, its area of influence. The American foundations - The Rockefeller Foundation in particular - played a fundamental role in this process, as much through financial resources as through human ones. On the third chapter I have studied the formation of the field of the Art of Caring in Brazil, through the creation of Ana Nery School (Escola Ana Nery). The analysis made is of the comprehension kind, having as its starting point the thought of the other, without labeling nor framing them into pre-conceived theoretical schemes. I have analyzed the rites and myths built during the formation of the field, that came both from religious areas (catholic and protestant) and from the war - which played an essential role. The origins of the Art of Caring are linked, as I said, to the fact of keeping life by the women and of retreating from death and suffering by men. These two aspects got reorganized, giving origin to the professional field / Doutorado / Mestre em Antropologia Social

In this work, we will focus on the analysis of cases of magic and witchcraft practices carried out by black women and our thematic focus focuses on specifically Portuguese magical beliefs and practices, having as a theoretical contribution the accounts of the history of mentalities and their cultural representations. This research also aims to analyze the black woman in relation to her religiosity. Throughout our research, we can observe women throughout the historical periods, relating periods and places, observed in their religious culture brought to Brazil. However, this work is relevant in the field of historiography, in the face of the prejudice that black women have suffered throughout history in relation to their creeds and beliefs, often interpreted as witchcraft and magic. This theme will also demystify the relationship of witchcraft practices with the cults of Afro-Brazilian religions, showing the vision and profile of black women in colonial Brazil. The research may be useful for society and for Brazilian History scholars to understand colonial society, knowledge about the role of women and for scholars of the Sciences of Religion to favor understanding of the religiosity of the Brazilian colonial period, collaborating for the development of studies against intolerance.
