As alterações no mundo rural têm ocasionado dificuldades para a manutenção dos festejos da Folia e a formação de novos foliões. A afluência dos migrantes locais para outras regiões do Brasil e outros países transforma os papéis sociais tradicionais e o significado original da festa. Por outro lado, de maneira geral, a população que permanece no local conserva as práticas tradicionais, mantendo a fé e seguindo os ritos da tradição, em contraste com a atitude dos migrantes que vivem uma realidade urbana e suas representações, através das oralidades. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi observar os modos de usar, de elaborar representações, de assimilar elementos culturais e religiosos, como são ressignificados ou transformados, ou, por vezes, definitivamente abandonados. _________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This work aims to provide an overview on a celebration know as Folia de Reis, which takes place in São Braz de Minas (MG) and the devotion of the local community to such celebration. The changes in the countryside have prevented the keeping of this celebration and discoveraged new participants. The fact that some of the locals have either migrated or immigrated to the other regions have caused the traditional social rules to shift, along with the original significance of the party. On the other hand, a great part of the population that remains in the city seems to preserve the traditional practices, keeping their faith and devoting to the rituals, as opposed to those who have left the country and now have incorporated the urban life and its representations. This work also draws attention on the ways of using and building up representations, of assimilating cultural or religious elements and the way in which all of that gets transformed or at times even abandoned.

Os Noves ocorrem à noite e incluem, além de canto e dança, comida e bebida. Este trabalho consiste na etnografia dos três Noves de que participei em trabalho de campo em Machado e arredores, no estado de Minas Gerais. Atrelo, à descrição, digressões a partir de elementos que vão sendo suscitados por ela, em um esforço por discernir e compreender as categorias empregadas pelos próprios participantes para falar de aspectos musicais, estéticos e relações sociais envolvidos no brinquedo. A abordagem do Nove como um ritual catalisador de configurações sociais singulares é alinhavada, no final, a uma discussão que relaciona feitiçaria e alguns questionamentos do conceito de sociedade. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation is about the Nove, festive gatherings that congregate men, women, children, young and old people, around collective dances known as brincadeiras de viola. They take place at night and, besides singing and dancing, involve food and drink. I present here an ethnography of three such Noves I took part during fieldwork in the town of Machado and its vicinities in the state of Minas Gerais. I append to the description digressions on different points and themes as they emerge from the description, in an attempt to discern and understand the categories employed by the participants themselves when they talk about social relationships or musical and æstetic aspects of the brinquedo. From an approach to the Nove as a ritual that catalyses specific social configurations, the dissertation moves to a discussion that relates witchcraft to some challenges to the concept of society.
