A Study of the Recreational Impact on Nolin Flood Control Reservoir in West Central KentuckyAdedibu, Afolabi 01 May 1975 (has links)
The purposes of this study are: (1) to consider factors that influenced the creation of Nolin Reservoir, and the selection of its recreation sites, (2) to consider the growth and the variations in attendance and participation in activities as a function of quantity and quality of available facilities and accessibility, and (3) to trace the changes that the creation of the reservoir has brought on the surrounding land use, value and ownership. Through the use of questionnaires, interviews and field investigations, the purposes were accomplished.
Nolin Reservoir was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers. After extensive study, the cost and availability of materials for construction were found to be the major factors in selecting the dam site and public use areas.
Attendance and participation at the reservoir and at particular recreation sites were found to vary. Such factors as the physical setting, accessibility, quantity and quality of facilities, and distance of each center to an urban area were found to have played significant roles in the analysis.
Tracing the changes in land use, value and ownership, it was determined that agricultural use has been converted into recreational use. This change has brought about other changes. Land values began to rise. In eleven years (1964-1974), land values have increased about 500 percent. The increase in land value had induced many types of land ownerships in the basin. Developers became active, and subdivisions were introduced in 1964. By 1974, there were 75 subdivisions in the basin. Many farmers converted their arable land into housing development and commercial uses of land have also developed.

An assessment of scale issues related to the configuration of the ACRU model for design flood estimationChetty, Kershani. January 2010 (has links)
There is a frequent need for estimates of design floods by hydrologists and engineers for the design of hydraulic structures. There are various techniques for estimating these design floods which are dependent largely on the availability of data. The two main approaches to design flood estimation are categorised as methods based on the analysis of floods and those based on rainfall-runoff relationships. Amongst the methods based on the analysis of floods, regional flood frequency analysis is seen as a reliable and robust method and is the recommended approach. Design event models are commonly used for design flood estimation in rainfall-runoff based analyses. However, these have several simplifying assumptions which are important in design flood estimation. A continuous simulation approach to design flood estimation has many advantages and overcomes many of the limitations of the design event approach. A major concern with continuous simulation using a hydrological model is the scale at which should take place. According to Martina (2004) the “level” of representation that will preserve the “physical chain” of the hydrological processes, both in terms of scale of representation and level of description of the physical parameters for the modelling process, is a critical question to be addressed. The objectives of this study were to review the literature on different approaches commonly used in South Africa and internationally for design flood estimation and, based on the literature, assess the potential for the use of a continuous simulation approach to design flood estimation. Objectives of both case studies undertaken in this research were to determine the optimum levels of catchment discretisation, optimum levels of soil and land cover information required and, to assess the optimum use of daily rainfall stations for the configuration of the ACRU agrohydrological model when used as a continuous simulation model for design flood estimation. The last objective was to compare design flood estimates from flows simulated by the ACRU model with design flood estimates obtained from observed data. Results obtained for selected quaternary catchments in the Thukela Catchment and Lions River catchment indicated that modelling at the level of hydrological response units (HRU’s), using area weighted soils information and more than one driver rainfall station where possible, produced the most realistic results when comparing observed and simulated streamflows. Design flood estimates from simulated flows compared reasonably well with design flood estimates obtained from observed data only for QC59 and QCU20B. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2010.

Previous issue date: 2007-08-31 / This research presents an evaluation of the eficiency of four flood control measures applied to an
urban basin in the city of Goiânia, State of Goiás, Brazil. Goiânia shows frequent flooding
problems. The following factors have been identified as causes of the floodings: (1) significant
number of impervious areas (2) lack of green areas, (3) insuficient capacity of the pipe network
to convey the produced water volume. Small detention basins, infiltration trenches and the
increase of permeable areas (30-50%) within parcels have been evaluated as flood control
measures as well as the use of the Lago do Bosque dos Buritis as a detention basin. For this
purpose, the Stormwater Management Model SWMM has been applied for evaluating 11
hypothetic management measures in the water basin. The later control measures were evaluated
individually as combined. In determining the impervious area index of the studied area, field
visits have been carried out, which showed high imperviousness. (86.16%). A synthetic rainfall
time series, derived from the equation proposed by Costa e Brito (1999) with recurrence of 2
years, has been used in the simulations. Horton`s equation was applied to represent infiltration
with parameters presented in Moura (2005). The scenario which combines the use of infiltration
trenches and the increase of pervious areas to 50% has shown to be the best solution in reducing
peak flow with 43% eficiency. On the other hand, the scenario using detention basins presented
the smallest efficiency (3%).

The constant floods in Cuiabá river basin had led population to seek ways to control the overflow occurrences, encouraging the construction of Manso hydroelectric power plant, nowadays under responsibility of Eletrobras Furnas Company, in an important tributary of this river. Much has been discussed about the safety provided by the flood attenuation of Manso Multiple Use reservoir (MMU) in downstream communities, mainly in the metropolitan region of Cuiabá River Valley. In this context, this dissertation reports on the evaluation of the influence of Manso reservoir on the flood attenuation in Cuiabá basin. Hydraulic scenarios were analyzed in order to compare the impact of extreme events that occurred before and after hydroelectric power plant operation in the case of existence and non existence of the reservoir, and the impact of design flood with many return periods in Manso river sub-basin. The hypothetical flood-control of the MMU was simulated by level pool routing method, and the wave propagation was calculated by CLiv hydrodynamic model. It was verified that the reservoir avoided an inundation of great magnitudes in 2006. Regarding the major inundations that occurred before the hydroelectric power plant construction, two of them would have been substantially attenuated by the existence of the reservoir, and a third one would have reached the alert levels defined by the State Civil Defense. Finally, it was concluded that, under perfect simulated conditions, MMU is able to reduce the flood frequency considered risky to communities downstream in return periods between 50 and 100 years. Despite the verified flood-control, for the purpose of mitigating the impacts in wise manners, many other precautions must be taken, especially those related to planning for appropriate occupation in flood plain areas, so that population safety does not depend exclusively on the reservoir.

Služebnost rozlivu / Easement of areas designated for overflowing of floodsKubala, Martin January 2021 (has links)
Easement of areas designated for overflowing of floods - Abstract The aim of this thesis is to elaborate and subsequently provide an analysis of the current legal regulation of the easement of areas designated for overflowing of floods in Czech civil law. With regard to the historical development of easements as a superior concept of the easement of areas designated for overflowing of floods, as well as with regard to the regulation of a similar institute, which is the area designated for controlled flood overflowing under the Water Act. This thesis focuses on approaching the relatively young institute of the easement of areas designated for overflowing of floods in Czech civil law, clarifying its basic essence and its use in practice. The first chapter briefly outlines the basic characteristics of easements and their subdivision. The second chapter of the thesis briefly outlines the basic characteristics of the easement of areas designated for overflowing of floods. In the third chapter, this thesis focuses on the historical development of easements from Roman law until the Civil Code of 1964, focusing on the general historical development of easements in the absence of specific regulation of the easement of areas designated for overflowing of floods in this historical development. The greatest emphasis in...

Thesis is about assessment of erosion and flood control measures effectiveness, especially of broad base terraces. The main contribution is a new method of flood effect evaluation of these measures. This is solved by modern programs and geospatial technologies such as ArcMap and HEC - HMS. Economic assessment in alternative solutions of flood and erosion control effect is a main result which leads to optimal technical proposal. The proposed, relatively fast, method can be successfully applied in practice.
