Matos, Felipe Luis Lacerda de Carvalho Cidade 23 February 2016 (has links)
Deforestation is one of the most discussed environmental issues within and outside the academic world. Brazil, as the holder of most of the Amazon Forest, is a key player in this discussion. This M.Sc. thesis aims to analyze the relationship between the environmental infraction notice and annual deforestation rate. In other words, we want to analyze if the adoption of more effective procedures of combat and control of deforestation, through the presence of government agencies in regions where deforestation occurs, will decrease the annual rates of deforestation. We analyzed the influence of PPCDAM – Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon – in the decreasing of deforestation rates after its implementation. The main hypothesis of this study was confirmed. More intensive presence of government agencies in critical regions in terms of deforestation, measured by the number of issuances of environmental infraction notices, was important to reduce deforestation rates in Brazil from the year 2005. The study area corresponded to seven states of the Legal Amazon (Acre, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia and Tocantins) that is part of Arch of Deforestation. The data set used in this study was: the number of environmental infraction notices regarding flora issued by IBAMA and the deforestation rate estimated by PRODES/INPE. The methodological approach was based on the analysis of the index relating the amount of fines per square kilometer, obtained by dividing the amount of infraction notices by the official deforestation rate. As a result, we observed that, in the years following the PPCDAM, in most of the years and in all states analyzed, the index of fines per square kilometer was higher than in the previous periods of PPCDAM. This shows that the presence of the government inspection agency was important to decrease the deforestation rate in Brazil in the past ten years. Keywords: Legal Amazon, Deforestation, Prevention and Control of Deforestation, Deforestation Dynamics.

Over the last few decades, a large extent of Amazon-Cerrado transitional forests has been converted to pastures and croplands. At the same time, remaining forests were affected by other drivers of forest degradation, including forest fires. The combined action of these drivers of degradation has increased the vulnerability of Amazonian forests, but their integrated effects are still poorly understood. This thesis aims to quantify how land use change and forest degradation by fire affect forest dynamics and regional climate via the energy balance. The thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 presents the results of a field study that quantifies the effect of experimental forest fires on fire intensity, grass invasion, and above-ground biomass in a transitional Amazonian forest in Mato Grosso. The fire experiment consisted of three 50-ha treatments (control, burned annually [B1yr], and burned every three years [B3yr]). Results indicated that repeated fires and invasion by C4 grasses acted synergistically to increase fire intensity, causing further degradation and threatening the future of transitional forests. Chapter 2, conducted in the same study area, investigates how a large wind storm (“blow-down”) interacted with forest degradation by fire to affect tree mortality and aboveground biomass. Censuses of trees in the experimental fire plots were conducted before and after a wind storm in October 2012. Results indicate that the negative effects of the wind storm on vegetation structure and aboveground biomass were higher within the burned plots and along forest edges than in the control plot. Based on these results, we inferred that these two degradation vectors acted synergistically to amplify forest degradation and increased the likelihood of impacts due to further disturbance events. Chapter 3 used satellite data to evaluate how three recent (2001-2010) land use transitions (forest-to-pasture, forest-to-cropland, and pasture-to-cropland) affected water cycling, the energy balance, and surface temperature on a regional scale (Xingu basin, ~ 170,000 km²). Our spatio-temporal analyses revealed that forest-to-pasture and forest-to-cropland transitions decreased net radiation (by 18 and 12%, respectively) and evapotranspiration (32 and 24%), while increasing sensible heat flux (6, 9%). At the regional (Xingu basin) scale, these land use transitions reduced evapotranspiration by 7 and 25.5 km³ and increased the average surface temperature by 0.07 and 0.2 °C, respectively. By quantifying the individual and combined effects of deforestation and other drivers of degradation on forest dynamics and the energy balance, this thesis advances our understanding of how future land use trajectories may influence the ecosystems and climate of Amazonia.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Tree species that colonize the Amazonian floodplains are subjected to long periods of submersion. To survive these conditions and ensure the perpetuation of the species, they need to have strategies for flood tolerance that should be evidenced from the formation of the seed. The goal of this study was to analyze morphological and biochemical seed characteristics of nine woody species that inhabit the lower portions of the flood-level gradient in the Central Amazonian floodplains and to evaluate germination and seedling formation of these species in water. All nine species are of widespread occurrence within the Amazonian floodplains. The result of analysis of total reserves contained in the seed showed that species invest in producing compacted reserves (structural carbohydrates and lipids) that are deployed after seed germination for use during the development of the seedling. Storage carbohydrates were composed in greater part by reserve cell wall polysaccharides, which differed greatly on the type among the nine species, as indicated by the different proportions of monosaccharides. For the soluble sugars higher concentrations were observed of sucrose and raffinose. Analysis of germination and seedling development showed that overall species are adapted to colonization of environments that are subjected to frequent floods, for all species, with the exception of Parkia discolor, germinated and formed seedlings in water. Crateva tapia, Eugenia inundata and Albizia subdimidiata were the ones with higher percentages of germination and seedling development in water (> 80%). Plantlets formed under these conditions remained in water and were able to withstand over 30 days of flooding and most of them were able to recover when removed from the water. Most species have seeds that germinate quickly, even in flooded conditions (<10 days), since there was no statistically significant difference in germination time between controls and submerged seeds. Overall, we conclude that these characteristics seem to promote effective strategies for maintaining populations of the studied species in the Amazonian floodplains.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / A question of great priority now days is the relationship between human beings and the environment given that the predatory exploitation of nature may jeopardize mankind future. The Amazon rainforest is a major concern because of its environmental value and landscape constantly threatened by human intervention. Based on this motivation this study aimed to investigate the cognitive processes that support the decision of preserving and/or transforming the Amazon rainforest in order to attend social needs. The piagetian clinical method, which seeks to answer how the representation of reality is mentally constructed and organized by individuals, was utilized. This strategy gives rise to a representational situation that evaluates the explanations and actions of individuals. In this regard, this instrument of analysis of environmental cognition was planned as a symbolic task allowing the transformation of the forest from a model with nine removable blocks representing the various areas of the Amazon rainforest. The model included a total of 12 blocks representative built elements of the urban infrastructure, which were the objects of choice for replacing, or not replacing the original forest blocks of the model. A semistructured interview intending to assess the understanding, the knowledge and the importance of the forests and of the areas that replaced the forest was undertaken. The study included 142 adolescents (72 f, 70 m), from 13 to 19 years of age, residents of the Federal District, Ceres-Go and Manaus-AM, enrolled in private schools, in state public schools and in a federal public agricultural school. The results derived from the interview and the actions performed by of the participants in the transformation of the model were analyzed. The verbal data were processed by the software ALCESTE and analyzed in view of the piagetian clinical method. The actions to transform the model were evaluated from three ecological understanding indicators: green value (the amount of green areas left by the participants in the model), conservation knowledge (the quality of green areas that the participants withdrew from the model) and technical knowledge (technical coherence of the transformations made). The local of residency and the type of school of the participants showed significant influences on the understanding of the Amazon biome and on the criteria adopted for the transformation of green areas. Nevertheless, the variables age and sex made no influence. These results suggest that the participants‟ type of school and of residency, social contexts investigated in this study, play a role in the understanding and the importance that they attach to the Amazon biome. The results indicated that the participants of this study identified that many of the urban problems are related to the way cities were planned as well as to the kind of relationship established between human beings and the natural resources. In addition, the participants demonstrated to understand environmental questions as important and problematic, therefore the stimulation provided by the research was instrumental for presenting their concern and willingness to discuss environmental issues.

As propriedades privadas apresentaram maior porcentagem de área queimada, enquanto as Reservas Ambientais Particulares e Terras Indígenas apresentaram as menores taxas. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Fires associated with the expansion of cattle ranching and agriculture has become a problem in the Amazon biome, causing severe environmental damages. Remote sensing images have been widely used in the fire monitoring on the extensive Amazon forest, but an accurate automated detection still need improvements. This research aims to evaluate MODIS time series spectral indices for mapping burned areas in the municipality of Novo Progresso, Para, and determine their occurrences in the different types of land use/land cover during the period 2000-2014. In burned area detection, the following data were compared: near-infrared band and spectral indices (NBR, NDVI and NBRT), considering daily images and 8-day composite products. MODIS time series were filtered and standardized temporally to eliminate false fire events. Threshold-value determination for the fire occurrences was obtained from the comparison of MODIS series with visual image classification of Landsat TM and ETM+ data using the Kappa coefficient. The best result considered the following factors: near-infrared band, daily data, and mean standardization, obtaining the Kappa coefficient value of 0.72 and Overall accuracy of 99%. The deforested areas are responsible for more than 70% of fire events. Private properties showed a higher percentage of the burned area, while private and Indigenous Lands Environmental Reserves had the lowest rates. The result of the proposed method was better than the burned area product (MCD45), but still shows cloud cover interference that should be improved in future work.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Rare species are important in balance and functioning of ecosystems and biodiversity conservation. However, rare populations have specific characteristics that make them more vulnerable to anthropic disturbances. This work aimed evaluate the impacts of changes in the natural landscape of the potential distribution areas of 13 locally rare tree species in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon. Ecological niche models were used to map the potential distribution of these species. From the satellite images classifications were identified two main impacts in the study area: the 'flooding caused by the the Jirau hydroelectric dam' and 'deforestation' generated by the construction of the Jirau hydroelectric dam, agriculture, urbanization and roads. The percentages of potential distribution areas of loss for each species were calculated by intersection of images of the impact on potential areas generated by ecological niche modeling. The 'deforestation' caused losses of potential distribution areas of rare tree species between 6.7% and 34.1%. The species most affected by the impact were Moronobea coccinea Aubl. (34.1%), Vochysia biloba Ducke (15.7%) and Xylopia benthamii R.E.Fr. (15.4%). The impact of the 'flooding of the UHE Jirau' varies between 1.7% and 8.2% losses of distribution areas of rare species of this work. The species most affected by this impact was Buchenavia congested Ducke (4.3%). The species with the most vulnerable in the area with the sum of the two impacts were Moronobea coccine and Vochysia biloba. The results indicate synergism of human impacts in the region and the considerable magnitude of these disturbances to rare species, with significant loss of potential areas to the most vulnerable populations to anthropism. The information generated from the rare species was of great importance for the evaluation of human impacts, maintenance and conservation strategies of vulnerable ecosystems.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study aimed at assessing litter and soil physical and chemical properties of terra firme forests in Logging Settings (UPAs) logged in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009, as well as comparing the results of each UPA with a Protected Area (APA). Data collection was carried out during rainy season in 15 permanent plots of 100 m x 50 m (three in each UPA and three in the APA) systematically sampled in the forest management area of the company Mil Madeiras Preciosas LTDA, in Silves/AM. Within each plot, litter was sampled in 0.5 m x 0.5 m subplots, composed soil samples were taken at three depths (0-10, 10-30 and 30-50 cm) and soil resistance to penetration (RP) was sampled using an impact penetrometer (0-50 cm). Furthermore, in each UPA, RP data was collected (0-50 cm) en three skid trails and in three log decks. For these samples, physical and chemical properties were determined in laboratory. In addition, litter stock (Mg ha -1 ) and content of nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and CO) were determined for litter samples. Soil was classified as dystrophic alic Yellow Oxisol with clayey texture. Soil density ranged between 1.50 and 1.83 g cm-3 , whereas it was verified decrease with the rise in the age after logging, with significant difference between UPAs and APA by Scott- Knott’s test. RP values of UPAs and APA did not statistically differ from each other and were, in general, ≤ 3.0 MPa. RP in the skid trails was high (> 3.0 MPa) and there was significant difference among UPAs, with higher RP values on the edges of the skid trails compared to the center of the trails. RP values in the log dumps, which were considered the most affected sites by forestry machinery, were very high (> 5.0 MPa), Soils presented high acidity and low fertility, with low sum of bases, low contents of Ca 2+ +Mg2+ , Na and K, very low contents of P, as well as S contents ranging from medium to appropriate. Organic matter and organic carbon contents varied from medium to high. There was significant difference between UPAs and APA for sulfur, Ca 2+ +Mg2+ , Al 3+ , base saturation and aluminum saturation, but their high contents of organic matter, in conjunction with the log pre-winching stage conducted in the UPAs, minimized some possible disturbances causes by forest logging to soil physical and chemical quality. UPAs presented higher litter stock than APA, with significant decrease throughout the years after logging. There was significant difference for litter contents of K, Ca 2+ and organic carbon between UPAs and APA. Overall, it was verified that the years after logging evinced low dissimilarity between UPAs and APA with respect to the soil and litter properties analyzed.

______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The Brazilian Amazon has around 6.5% of its territory converted into pastures that when abandoned transform the landscape into a mosaic of secondary sites in different stages of forest succession. Such pastures represent most of the current demand for restoration of degraded areas. The first years of natural regeneration of pastures into tropical rain forest have been investigated using long-term chronosequences. The aims of this study were to understand the speed of natural regeneration expressed in the structure and richness of plant communities in abandoned pastures in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon by looking at short-term chronosequence, and to investigate the influence of the history of land-use and adjacent forest cover in this process. This study was carried out in rural lands located around 100 km west of Porto Velho-RO. We installed 314 m2 plots in 34 abandoned pastures in different stages of natural regeneration that have previously been subject to long-term use (10 years average). All individuals belonging to tree species ≥ 30 cm height were identified and measured. In order to estimate the total time of use, the time since last use, and the time of abandonment of pastures (time of “encapoeiramento”), we used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index calculated from a historical series of Landsat satellite images from 1984 to 2013. The percentage of forest cover adjacent to each plot was calculated by intersecting three circular buffers (0 ̶ 60 m, 60 ̶ 110 m and 110 ̶ 210 m) with a supervised classification of satellite images. We sampled 6380 stems belonging to 215 species/morphospecies grouped in 126 genera and 53 families. The two most important species were Vismia guianensis and V. gracilis (Hypericaceae) that together represented 40% of abundance, 70% of frequency, and 101% of IVI (Importance Value Index) of the communities sampled. Most species (164) were recorded in a maximum of four plots and had an individual IVI < 1%. Richness increased by ca. five species per year after pasture abandonment (R2 = 0.72; p < 0.001), while basal area increased 0.06 m2 per year (R2 = 0.63; p < 0.001). The occurrence of rare species (< 2 individuals) increased with time since abandonment, while relative abundance of the main pioneer species decreased with the advance of forest succession. Although constrained by long-term use associated with managed fires, natural regeneration in abandoned pastures occurs relatively rapidly due to the high capacity of resprouting of pioneer species, which form secondary sites during the first years of succession. Afterwards, regeneration is favoured by seed dispersal, possibly influenced by the adjacent forest cover, which was marginally supported by our results. It is important that initiatives related to ecological restoration of abandoned pastures in the Amazon consider the natural potential of forest regeneration, considering both the speed and intensity of the process, as well as land use history and the surrounding landscape. Efforts aiming at land restoration should be focused on the maintenance of the process of natural regeneration (including protection against fire) as opposed to more expensive measures such as planting seedlings and enrichment.

Barros, Paulo Luiz Contente de, 1952- 27 May 2013 (has links)
Abstract: The objectives of this research were to test several mathematical models which express the diameter distribution, as well as to verify the influence of the diameter class interval in the fitness of the tested models. The models we re applied individually for: all species in the area, for the most frequent and the commercial species. The data for this research carne from the National Forest of Tapajós, located in the county of Santarem, state of Para, Brazil. A total number of li.i73 trees with diameter breast height above 15 centimeters, and totalling 167 species were measured. The following mathematical models were tested to describe the diameter distribution of the area: MODEL 1: Exponential, type I yi = A . e -BXi MODEL 2: Exponential, type II yi = A . e -BX²i MODEL 3: Power function, MERVART yi = A . e Xi-B MODEL 4: Hyperbola, PIERLOT yi = [(xi - x0) / (10A+BXi - 1)] + y0 MODELO 5: Polynomial, Goff & West log y = b0 + b1Xi + b2Xi2 + … + bnXin MODELO 6: Weibull function F (X) = 1 - exp {-(X/b)C} MODELO 7: Beta function F (X) = c (X-a)a . (b-X)? The sum of squares of residuals was used as a criterium to select the equations by group of species, and by class intervals. The probability associated with the number of runs of residuals, which gives the probability that the observed number of signs changes in the plot of residuals occurred randomly, was also used. Following these criteria, among the seven tested models, to represent the relationship of the number of trees by 1OO ha on diameter classes, the Beta function, the polynomial and the exponential models presented the best results in fitting such relationship. The Weibull function also seems to estimate very well the percentages of the number of trees smaller or equal to a specified diameter of the stand. In comparing class intervals the models in general presented the best results for the class interval of 1O cm, the precisson of the equations decreased with the decreased sing of the class intervals.

Figueiredo Filho, Afonso, 1951- 24 June 2013 (has links)
