Comparing Serif and Sans Serif Typeface Pairings on MapsJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: When cartographers and graphic designers create maps they choose typefaces. Often, serif and sans serif typefaces are paired together to represent different information on a map. Typefaces have a communicated tone and choosing the correct typeface combination to send the intended message can be challenging. The purpose of this study was to create an analysis of the aesthetic characteristics of typeface pairings to assist map creators when choosing typefaces. An online survey was utilized to collect responses from graphic designers who have been trained in at least one year or more in design from a higher education institution. There were 30 participants in the study and they scored 24 typeface pairings, 12 differentiating and 12 superfamily, on 48 maps. Scoring was done on eight aesthetic characteristics: friendly, whimsical, cheap, neutral, bland, corporate, serious and modern. The researcher conducted an analysis of each typeface’s microaesthetics and then compared these to the survey’s scored aesthetic characteristics. It was concluded that there are many factors that go into comparing the typeface pairings of serif and sans serif typeface combinations. However, a selection of a superfamily typeface pairing is better than selecting a differentiating pairing. Future research should focus on conducting studies with a varying amount of typeface styles. Also, to include less maps per survey and a survey completion status bar. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Engineering 2018

What Would You Buy? The Effect of Color and Font Size on Purchase Intention in Digital AdvertisementsCastañeda, Julian E 01 January 2019 (has links)
Business professionals have always been intrigued on how to increase purchases through advertisements. Digital advertisements are a new medium in which businesses can utilize to connect with consumers. In this study, participants (n = 126) were presented advertisements on a Qualtrics survey that manipulated color (warm and cool) and font size (large and small) across three product types (electronics, food, and automobiles) to examine the effects of Purchase Intention. There were no significant main effects or interactions of color and font size on Purchase Intention throughout each product type. However, color and font size impacted other factors (Perception, Memory, and Appeal) in the study and showcased significant findings in Electronic and Automobile advertisement product types. These results have implications for the effectiveness of advertising in digital mediums, the power of personally tailoring advertisements to individual consumers, and ultimately converting prospective window shoppers to paying customers.

Effekten av bakgrundstal på prosaminne : Kan ett annorlunda teckensnitt skydda från distraktion?Hellman, Anna, Hellström, Ida January 2013 (has links)
Den här experimentella studien undersökte huruvida man kan skyddas från bakgrundstal genom att använda sig av ett annorlunda teckensnitt än det man vanligtvis läser. Trettiotvå försöksdeltagare deltog i experimentet. / This experimental study investigated whether a person can be protected from background speech when using of a different font then they usually reads. Thirty-two participants took part in the experiment. The participants' task was to recall information from texts about two fictitious cultures that were either written in a common font (Times New Roman) or in a different font (Haettenschweiler) in two sound conditions: silence and irrelevant background speech. The results showed that the participants' performance deteriorated on the reading memory test when they would remember a text written in Times New Roman, but not when the text was written in Haettenschweiler. This suggests that a person can be protected from background speech while reading shorter texts written in a different font than they usual read, which can be a simple solution to use in an open-plan office.

It further examined overall perceptions of email advertisements. The study conducted a survey containing eighteen simulated emails that was distributed over Amazon MTurk. A total of 116 participants in the United States took the survey. Results showed that most participants preferred a yellow foreground to orange and purple, and a blue background to red and green. Findings also revealed that Georgia font style was consistently preferred over Onyx font style.
