Study of mechanical behavior of metallic glasses Mg-Cu-Y using nano-indenter

Wang, Wei-Jhe 07 August 2008 (has links)
The mechanical properties of the amorphous bulk metallic glassy (BMG) alloy, Mg58Cu31Y11, are examined by a non-traditional analytic method - nanoindentation scratch test. This thesis will discuss the influences of friction force, and fracture surface geometry on the BMG surface for load, depth of scratch, scratch velocity, and test temperature of the nano-scratch process. In this study, experimental factors, including load, depth of scratch, scratch velocity, and test temperature, are taken into consideration to investigate the effects of the friction force. And then, this research utilizes regression analysis to establish BMG machining experience formula. The significant parameters of the friction force on nano-scratch and the reliability of the prediction model are investigated by statistical software. According to the results, the friction force is nearly proportional to power of the load. The friction force exhibits a slightly dependence on the test temperature. Besides, the nano-scratch results show that the friction coefficient also increases as the load and test temperature increases. The results associated with the analysis of the variance can be practiced to assess the prominence among experimental factors. The analysis indicates that the load, test temperature play significant factors on the friction force. The results of the regression analysis using a statistical software can be applied to model the mathematical relationship between machining factors and friction force. It anticipates that the model is able to predict friction force over a wide variety of scratching conditions. The model is also proved in good agreement with experimental results.

The Effect of Merger & Acquisition Strategies on Stock Price¡ÐFocus on Acer, Asustek, and Hon Hai

Cheng, Wen-wei 10 June 2009 (has links)
Taiwan is an economical body whose major profit is from exporting products. In recent years, electronics industry is becoming the most important role in the exporting trade and makes low profit by manufacturing products for international company and brand. According to the theory of smile curve that invented by Mr. Stan Shih, a founder member of Acer, manufacturing always locates in the bottom of the curve and makes lowest profit. Moreover, in the both high ends are brand (R&D) and marketing (sale/ after service). If the companies would like to climb from bottom to high ends, taking merger and acquisition strategies is the fastest method. Acer and Asustek try to build up their own brands, and Hon Hai, a leading foundry company in Taiwan, wants to enlarge scale, reduce cost, they all use merger and acquisition strategies to achieve their goal rapidly. Hence, the study is focus on Acer, Asustek, and Hon Hai. Through short-term, middle-term, and long-term changes of stock price, we can understand how M&A patterns, amounts, and ways in M&A strategies influence result of M&A. Adopt multiple regression methodology to analyze these above-mentioned factors, and find the factors that influence the result of M&A from empirical studies. The effect of M&A patterns, amounts, and ways gradually weaken. Due to the theory of behavior finance, we may get an inference that there is overreactions or underreactions (momentum effect) in short-term changes of stock prices. But the momentum effect passes off over time. In addition, with Porter¡¦s five force analysis, advice that the company should analyze the competitive intensity in the industry, and develop its core competence. Then taking adequate M&A strategies, and grasping the timing of market can help firms grow up quickly, and get shareholders¡¦ support wholeheartedly.

Adhesion of nano-objects to chemically modified surfaces

Barker, Kane McKinney 05 August 2009 (has links)
The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is an instrument that is capable of measuring intermolecular forces between single molecules. Multi-Parameter Force Spectroscopy (MPFS) is a technique that uses the AFM. MPFS enables the acquisition of force curves and thermal resonance of the system under investigation. This technique can shed light on the mechanical behavior at the molecular level. Improvements described herein have enhanced the sensitivity of MPFS over background noise. This investigation focuses on the mechanical and interfacial properties of three carbon nanostructures: long nanotubes, nanocoils, and nanoloops. Different types of adhesion are encountered, measured and discussed: friction, rupture, and peeling. The elastic modulus of long carbon nanotubes is calculated from frequency shifts when the system is put into tension. An elastica model is applied to the post-buckled carbon nanotubes, which enables the estimation of the static coefficient of friction on chemically modified surfaces. The compression of a nanocoil at large contact angles reveals that changes in oscillation amplitude do not occur from damping, but from adding stiffness into the systems measured herein. This result is counter to the assumptions of dynamic force spectroscopy. Finally, carbon nanoloops are brought into and out of contact with several different surfaces. The force curve and frequency response of the system shows the difference between rupture and peeling. The results presented herein lead to a better understanding of the mechanical and tribological properties of the carbon nanostructures.
