Palestinier och israeler i svensk dagspress : En beskrivande komparativ kvantitativ innehållsanalys av den mediala gestaltningen

Bylund, Jenny January 2020 (has links)

Bohman Karlholm, Adrian January 2020 (has links)

Löfroth, Sebastian January 2022 (has links)
The rise to power of Viktor Orbán in 2010 has brought with it democratic backsliding and suppression of rights in Hungary, a country that in the early 2000s was seen as one of the most promising new democracies in Eastern Europe. In this thesis speeches held by Viktor Orbán during the period of 2011-2022 are examined and analyzed and further connected with identified populist strategies and framing analysis. Which tries to understand the relation between communication in the context of sender and receiver and how the receiver might interpret the message differently depending on how it is “framed”. In an attempt to understand how and which populist strategies and rhetoric has been used to justify and motivate three overarching developments during Fidesz’s period in power: the major constitutional changes of 2012 and 2013, the developments on migration and the “Stop Soros Law” as well as the suppression of LGBT rights. This paper concludes that Viktor Orbán has continuously used populist rhetoric to “attack” and undermine his opposition, whether this is in the form of the EU or domestically, championing the Hungarian cause and its people thus justifying the changes that Fidesz has implemented.

Riktiga flyktingar : En undersökning av svenska dagstidningars inramning av flyktingarna från Ukraina 2022

Wahlborg, Moa January 2022 (has links)
In what ways are Ukrainian refugees framed in Swedish news media? According to agenda-setting theory the choices made by journalists have a real effect on public opinion and politics. This essay attempts to analyse and clarify the portrayal of the refugees from Ukraine in Swedish newspapers in order to make a contribution to the general research about media framing of refugees. 71 articles and editorials from the largest daily newspapers of Sweden, published between February and April of 2022, were read and interpreted. The attributes that refugees were characterised as having were analysed, resulting in two principal frames: the Asset, and the Victim, which represent the predominant ways in which journalists show the refugees as deserving of coming to and remaining in Sweden. The refugees are rarely presented as a problem; rather, it’s the Swedish state and Migration Agency which are portrayed as problematic. The findings are of interest both because of the effect media framing may have on society and politics, but also due to the differences in framing between the Ukrainian refugees and the refugees who came to Sweden during the ‘refugee crisis’ of 2015.

Monetary Rewards and Framing of the Problem in Crowdsourcing : Effects on Participation

Mohammadi, Fateme, Mårtensson, Christina January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore if monetary reward negatively affects people’s willingness to participate in crowdsourcing projects and to see how the relationship between monetary rewards and the framing of the crowdsourcing problem affects participation in crowdsourcing contests. A two-phase data collection method is used to answer these questions; a survey to identify the people who had participated in crowdsourcing projects and a focus group with the suitable candidates to discuss the research questions further. According to our findings, framing a crowdsourcing project as a good cause is not a strong enough motivation to convince people to participate in a challenge. People usually look for a benefit (financial or personal) in a challenge when deciding to participate. On the other hand, offering a reward for a crowdsourcing contest that is held for a good cause increases people’s willingness to participate. Potential participants react differently to a reward that is larger than usual. While more experienced participants feel extra motivated by large rewards, those who have less experience in crowdsourcing projects are more likely to see the large reward as a threat, decreasing their chances of winning, thus, reducing their willingness to participate in those challenges.

What Does it Mean to be a Female Character in “Indie” Game Storytelling? Narrative Framing and Humanization in Independently Developed Video Games

Perreault, Mildred F., Perreault, Gregory, Suarez, Andrea 01 January 2021 (has links)
Video games have long held a spotty history in their narratives regarding women. Most research has examined large budget games and identified issues of simplification, oversexualization, and a general lack of agency among female characters. The present study explores the gaming niche of “indie”—or independent game developer—video games in their representations of women in particular with Never Alone, Gone Home, and Her Story. These games were released around the time frame of the GamerGate controversy—a controversy which drew attention to the treatment of women in gaming culture—and hence, the games are used to reflect on a potential shift in games culture following the controversy. This article argues that these game narratives emphasized multilayered female characterizations, female-to-female interactions, and internal dramas as a way to potentially reach female gamers and present an alternative, humanizing narrative on women.

Not Just About a Piece of Cloth: Three Content Analysis of an Online Anti-Mandatory Hijab Movement in Iran

Basmechi, Farinaz 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the My Stealthy Freedom (MSF) movement, an online movement against mandatory hijab laws in Iran, building on two leading lead social movements' theories, political processes and framing processes theories. Study 1 explores the utility of a tactical approach for explaining the movement's pace of insurgency. I employ a conceptual repertoire focused upon the political process model's core concepts of tactical innovation and tactical adaptations, supplementing these older concepts with the more recently proposed concept of tactical freeze and a newly proposed concept of tactical hashtags that is of particular relevance to online movements. Study 2 focuses on extracting hidden patterns and emotional characteristics in the MSF movement by conducting a topic modeling study on the text appearing in the captions of the main account of the movement on Instagram. It was shown that the actions of Masih Alinejad, the founder of the movement, represented by her online activity and extracted by means of topic modeling, is directly affected by the sequence of important events happening in Iran concluding to a transformation of a social movement to political one. Study 3 models how social movements use social media in the formation of affective publics and apply this model to Instagram post data from the MSF movement. Thematic analysis applied to samples of posts and comments revealed six main themes, one of which, aggression, includes three subthemes related to verbal aggression and physical violence. As the level of aggression increased in Instagram videos, the level of aggression in the comments increased as well, and videos containing verbal aggression and physical violence had more likes and comments than did non-aggressive and non-violent videos. In the conclusion, I consider implications of the three studies for social movement framing research and research on emotions and social movements.

Framing Architecture

Shirey, David E. 02 December 2003 (has links)
The following thesis is comprised of a pair of projects focused on the making of architecture through the concept of framing. The work was conducted at the Academia d'Architettura in Mendrisio, Switzerland, under the direction of Peter Zumthor, Miguel Kreisler and Myriam Sterling, emphasizing the relationship between ordered structures and contextual propriety. The making of architecture is inherently most pure when approached as the subtraction of unnecessary elements and a distillation of what is required for a specific program on a particular site. Life is given to structure through habitation; therefore the senses of the inhabitant must be engaged through interaction with the philosophical and tectonic elements of a place. In this didactic, the structure is made complete by its inhabitation and it completes the sensory framing of place by establishing the vantage point of the inhabitant. The confluence of inhabiting space and marking place together result in an architecture of experience. / Master of Architecture

How to Frame a Terrorist - Swedish Newspapers' Reporting on Acts of Terror in the Nordic Countries during the 2010s

Bravinger, Carl January 2020 (has links)
During the 2010s what could be described as a new “terror-wave” went through Europe, the Nordic countries included, and for a while it was the primary concern for many young Europeans. At the same period, an influx of right-wing parties has gained popularity, both within the European Union and on a national level. This arose the curiosity to investigate how the news coverage on some of the terror attacks differ based on the terrorist’s background. To explore this the thesis conducts a quantitative content analysis on 863 news articles from the four largest newspapers in Sweden. Six acts of terror committed in any of the Nordic countries during the 2010s were ultimately compared and analysed by coding the articles abductively, basing the codes on Entman’s theory of framing. To raise the validity of the study, an external validity was assessed using a representative sample of the Swedish newspapers landscape, and through conducting the coding twice with some space in between resulting in similar conclusions. The analysis demonstrates that there are obvious differences in the framing of the attack, the terrorist and the proposed measures when comparing the coverage of the acts of terror.
