Are there vestiges or elements of African traditional cultural beliefs and practices that affect the psychological and spiritual well-being of African Christian students in Tangaza University College (TUC)? If there are, how best can pastoral carers work with the affected students to help them deal with the issues and regain congruence? These questions, arising out of our practice in the Student Life Ministry in TUC, are the puzzles I set out this study to try to resolve. Our experience was that some of the students were presenting issues in counselling and spiritual direction emanating from unresolved conflict between their African backgrounds and the Christian faith. Observation was that the issues did not surface easily and when they did the carers were not sure how best to help the clients. I thus felt a need to find out what cultural issues affect the students, how the issues manifest in their lives and how best the pastoral care team could work with those affected to help the issues surface and be resolved. This is an original research designed as an inductive case study and to collect data, a multi-dimensional approach including focus discussion groups with students and members of the SLM, depth interviews with SLM members, selection of some vignettes of counselling and spiritual direction and practitioner observation - were used. The main finding is that there indeed are elements of African beliefs and practices that impinge on the psychological and spiritual wellbeing of some of the African Christian students in TUC. However, not all the students experience such dissonance as some have developed a synthesis between their two world views. Those who have not are embarrassed about and reticent in disclosing the issues thus the need for the pastoral carers to help them to integrate their traditional culture with their Christian faith. Clinical experience has shown that by combining two counselling models – the Rogerian Person-centred and Albert Ellis’s Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, underpinned in a dialogical, theological paradigm, counsellors and spiritual guides can help the affected students not only to talk about the issues but also to work through them to re-gain equilibrium and enjoy greater fullness of life.

The approaches is located in between representation and abstraction by combining the painting skills and expressions of Chinese Gong Bi [工笔] and Xie Yi [写意] with focuses on complementing visual clarity and obscurity. The aim of the research is to explore visual absence as a painting strategy in contemporary art practice, referring to the painting method of reduction, incompleteness and metaphor that extends the painting space and meaning through visual presence, thus unfurling an extended art form and creative strategy from Chinese classical aesthetics. The outcome is a series of paintings as an exploration in extending the Chinese painting aesthetics. This project is constituted of 80% practice-based work, accompanied by 20% exegesis in approximately 11,600 words as a complement.

No bojo da resposta à questão “o que mudou, entre crença e descrença, em 500 anos de civilização ocidental, de 1500 a 2000?”, ele considera um conjunto de reelaborações e ressignificações nos antigos e novos modos de pensar, agir e se envolver no tocante à espiritualidade e seus modos de imbricação social. O propósito, aqui, é analisar a chave de leitura tayloriana sobre a secularização, o quadro no qual se desenvolverão as condições da crença e da descrença atuais, com amplas repercussões políticas, sociais, éticas, antropológicas, etc., em indivíduos e em sociedades. / The ordinary meaning given to the secularization in the West, points to the purge of the religious view in public places and society, in which debates evidentiate themselves in a polarized clash between religious and scientific discourse, with the advantage of these last. Charles Taylor intends to demonstrate how timid and biased is this perspective. In the midst of the answer to the question “what has changed between belief and unbelief, in 500 years of Western civilization, from 1500 to 2000?”, he considers a set of redrafts and new meanings in old and new ways of thinking, acting and engage regarding to spirituality and its modes of social embeddedness. The aim here is to analyze the Taylorian reading key about secularization, the framework within which are going to be developed the current conditions of the belief and unbelief, with wide political, social, ethical, anthropological, and so forth, repercussions, on individuals and societies.

Global warming leads to an increased browning of lakes across the northern hemisphere. This browning can due to benthic light-limitation cause hypoxic bottom conditions which can have negative impact on the fish production in the northern lakes. In this study, I obtained data from a large-scale experiment to test if the removal of anoxic bottom conditions in the hypolimnion affects Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) populations. This was done with a Before-After, Control-Impact design in two adjacent lakes by altering the oxygen conditions in the hypolimnion in one lake while the other remained as control. To analyse if experimental oxygenation of an anoxic hypolimnion altered perch performance, I analysed samples of individual growth (based on back-calculated growth from operculum bone readings), condition, diets and stomach fullness in perch before and after oxygenation from the control and impact lake. The results showed that growth, condition, and stomach fullness increased in the treatment lake but not in the control lake, suggesting that resource availability increased for perch with the removal of anoxic hypolimnion conditions. However, a decline in population abundances was also observed over time within both lakes, which may provide at least an alternative explanation of the observed responses. Still, I hypothesize that the oxygenation at least partially increased the resource abundance in brown lakes, thus increasing fish growth and size.

This thesis presents: 1) the first statistically rigorous support for the longstanding hypothesis that state of satiation modifies diel vertical migration patterns of deep-sea micronektonic crustaceans and fishes; and, 2) the first assessment of microplastic ingestion by deep-pelagic micronekton in the Gulf of Mexico and Straits of Florida. Deep-sea pelagic crustaceans and fishes significantly contribute to abundance and biomass of pelagic ecosystems, are frequently consumed by commercially valuable fishery species, and serve to transport both nutrients and pollutants between shallow and deep waters. The results presented herein will be valuable for assessing risk associated with potential biomagnification of plastic through consumption or indirect consumption of deep-sea biota. Moreover, these data demonstrate that the extent of feeding at depth by non-migratory taxa as well as non-migrating individuals of migratory taxa is substantial. Feeding at depth is usually excluded from biogeochemical models, and these data demonstrate that this is an important factor that must be included to obtain more precise estimates of active nutrient flux by micronekton.

Le cas particulier des données accessibles dans les banques de données judiciaires exige des solutions particulières : il s'agit de trouver l'équilibre nécessaire entre le principe de transparence judiciaire et le droit à la vie privée. / The upheavals generated by the new means of disseminating public data, together with the multiple possibilities offered by the Internet, such as information storage, comprehensive memory tools and the use of search engines, give rise to major issues related to privacy protection. The dissemination of public data in digital format causes a shift in our scales of time and space, and changes the traditional concept ofpublic nature previously associated with the "paper" universe. We will study the means of protecting privacy, and the conditions for accessing and using the personal information, sometimes of a "sensitive" nature, which is contained in the public documents posted on the Internet. The characteristics of the information available through judicial data banks require special protection solutions, so that the necessary balance can be found between the principle of judicial transparency and the right to privacy.

[pt] Este trabalho tem o seu foco no estudo da expressão hiuotesía, na literatura de tradição paulina, que é, em toda a Sagrada Escritura, a única que a utiliza. Embora haja trabalhos significativos sobre a questão, esta pesquisa estabelece um estudo comparativo entre a hiuotesía no contexto imediato de Gl 4,1-7, circunstanciada pela expressão plerôma tou chrónou e de Ef 1,3-10, onde, curiosamente, é utilizada a expressão plerôma tõn Kairôn. Nessa comparação reside a originalidade da presente pesquisa. Como os dois textos que reportam este termo encontram-se em contextos literários mais amplos, a primeira tarefa diz respeito ao estudo da estrutura de cada um desses contextos. Em seguida, passa-se ao estudo exegético de cada um deles, levando-se em conta aspectos semânticos, sobretudo em sua abordagem diacrônica. Com isto chega-se a identificar o alcance do vocábulo hiotesía e das expressões plerôma tou chrónou e plerôma tõn Kairôn em cada perícope A análise e comparação desses dois textos da tradição paulina evidenciam que as dessemelhanças existentes entre eles são decorrentes de paradigmas distintos que demandam, por isso mesmo, diferenciadas abordagens teológicas. Nesse sentido, o autor de Ef, ao se apropriar das expressões hiuotesía e plerôma tõn Kairôn, apresenta, de sua parte, uma nova e diferente interpretação do que o autor de Gl, anteriormente, dissera ao servir-se das expressões plerôma tou chrónou e hiuotesía. / [en] This work concentrates on the study of the expression hiuotesía in the writings of the Pauline tradition, the only one to use it in all the Holy Scriptures. Though significant works have been written on this matter, our present research frames a study on hiuotesía in the immediate context of Gal 4:1-7 and accompanied by the expression plerôma tou chrónou, as compared with that of Eph 1:3-10 where, stringly, the expression plerôma tõn Kairôn is used. In this comparison lies the originality of the present research. Since each of the texts that employ this term must be seen in it ampler literary context, the first task is to study the structure of each of those contexts. Next, follows the exegetical study of each of them, taking into consideration semantic aspects, especially in their diachronic approach. We thus manage to identify the range of the word hiuotesía and expression plerôma tou chrónou and plerôma tõn Kairôn in each pericope. Analysis and comparison between these two texts of the Pauline tradition show that the dissimilarities between them result from distinct paradigms which, therefore, demand differing theological approaches. In this sense, the author of Eph, by making his own the expressions hiuotesía and plerôma tõn Kairôn, offers, for his part, a new interpretation, differing from what the author of Gal had previously said by using the expressions plerôma tou chrónou and hiuotesía.
