Resource towns in British Columbia : a study of the physical environment of Gold River and GoldenSammarco, Sebastiano Riccardo January 1971 (has links)
The Problem
Over the last few decades British Columbia has experienced an unprecedented wave of economic growth which has resulted in the creation of new towns such as Gold River, Houston, Hudson's Hope, Mackenzie, in the planned expansion of Port Hardy and Port McNeil, and in the rearrangement of other communities.
The forest industry, by use of a sustained yield management system, has set examples of a stable town-building activity. It is the intention of this thesis to investigate the physical environment of two British Columbia forest-based towns, and in particular the visual, three-dimensional design resulting from resource development. The subject matter appears to be of Interest, at this moment in time, because of an acquired consciousness, by many, that the building of a new town is more than a practical method for providing a labour pool to the parent industry, indeed a technique for channeling and directing urban growth in a regional context.
Method of Approach
The study attempts to examine the resources of forest-based towns. The method adopted consists of drawing parallels between Gold River and Golden, selected as sample communities. These are considered representative of the provincial trend: creation of new towns, and reorganization of old towns.
The study is based on information gathered through direct contact with the inhabitants. A questionnaire worked out by the U.B.C. Department of Community and Regional Planning for a student project during the year 1968 was used, and the factual information was gathered as background material for a discussion on the town-forms as observed.
Four areas articulate the study: a) historical, b) factual, c) structural, and d) visual analysis. Town forms are discussed in relation to four primary elements which derive from a combination of a personal bias and of Kevin Lynch’s way of looking at cities. These elements are: Nodes, Routes, Districts and Prime Volumes. They are first separately compiled and then brought together in comparison. An appraisal involving R. Anaheim's category of order, Homogeneity, Coordination, Hierarchy and Accident, summarizes the observations.
The method used relies on subjective perception and description of what can be called a "collective image" of resource towns.
The Findings
The historical analysis shows that both government and private enterprise have determined the present state of resource development and the physical form of the towns. The resource community shows clear signs of evolution, especially significant in the development of a planning attitude. The stages of this evolution are to be seen in the gradual changes of the resource town from tent-camp to the present planned instant-town.
The analysis shows that the basic needs of community life, work, housing, and social facilities have not only been catered for, but are yet evolving. The main body of the thesis, consisting of the structural and visual analysis of the town, looks at the three-dimensional reality of the environments, and from this it is shown that the evolved towns possess many virtues which if understood could provide guidance in the building of new towns.
The findings suggest that future implementations should consider the following as necessary premises to a more fulfilling town life:
1. The success of a new town must be closely associated with the harmonious interrelation between the natural and the man-made forms, between the land and the buildings.
2. Since growth of towns can only be predicted over relatively short time spans, the practice of clearing land should be restricted to phases of development.
3. The removal of natural features such as trees and land forms should be controlled by the citizens.
4. Zoning regulations should be released with the objective of creating greater mixtures of uses, as incentive to social needs.
5. The "gridiron," as an open geometric pattern, can provide for qualitative growth. The orthogonal scheme should be more closely investigated before being discarded as old and obsolete town design.
Older towns, which mirror the needs and are an aesthetic expression of the community, provide an opportunity for developing from "within" a concept for new towns. The plea coming from many sources and urging experimentation and development of a Canadian model must focus its validity on the need for identity. Guidelines which take into consideration local heritage can be Instrumental in the creation of a Canadian new town concept. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

In this work, an existing relationship between the unpretentious Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Mean, also known as the Golden Ratio or Golden Number. In this same context, we deal with a discrete variational model through the differences and continuous equations through Linear Differential Equations, questioned by population growth escargots, whose solution appears the Golden Mean. For reasons of this work we use literature consists of books and publications whose foundation lies mainly in authors, Rodney C. Bassanezzi, Mauritius Zahn, William E. Boyce and Richard C. DiPrima. The princial objective was to give a continuous approach to the discrete variational model generated by population growth of snails / Mestrado / Matematica Aplicada e Computacional / Mestre em Matemática Aplicada e Computacional

Diálogos possíveis entre saberes científicos e locais associados ao capim-dourado e ao buriti na região do Jalapão, TO / Possible dialogues between scientific and local knowledge associated to the golden grass and buriti palm in the Jalapão region, TORebeca Verônica R. Viana 26 April 2013 (has links)
Syngonanthus nitens (Bong.) Ruhland and Mauritia flexuosa Mart. species are used in the golden grass crafts, typical of the Jalapão (TO) region. The stalks of S. nitens are sewn with fibers extracted from young leaves of M. flexuosa, for making baskets, mandalas and costume jewelry. In this context, the research sought to establish a dialogue between local and scientific knowledge about these species. Local knowledge and perceptions of artisans regarding the golden grass and the buriti palm were surveyed in two quilombola communities: Mumbuca and Prata, located respectively in the municipalities of Mateiros and São Félix do Tocantins (TO). Through qualitative research semi-structured interviews, participative observations and focus groups were conducted. Regarding the golden grass, content analysis shows assertions and questions related to golden grass fire management, morphological variations and seeds production; as for the buriti palm, the local distinction of male and female buriti, made in vegetative individuals was highlighted. Based on these results, not only it was possible to make associations with scientific bibliography available on both species, but also it inspired knew scientific questions about S.nitens and M. flexuosa. Moreover, these results highlight the plurality of perspectives on the two species from Brazil\'s flora: golden grass and buriti palm. Finally, it was possible to create a dialogue rout for local and scientific knowledge, which enhances the debates on biodiversity conservations and its relations with local Communities and environmental education

EVALUATION OF THE RECREATIONAL CATCH-AND-RELEASE FISHERY FOR GOLDEN DORADO SALMINUS BRASILIENSIS IN SALTA, ARGENTINA: IMPLICATIONS FOR CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENTGagne, Tyler 24 March 2017 (has links)
Golden dorado (Salminus brasiliensis, Cuvier, 1816) is increasing in popularity as a target for recreational anglers practicing catch-and-release (C&R) in northern Argentina and bordering countries. However, to date no research has looked at the potential social and ecological implications of growth in this recreational fishery. The first manuscript of this thesis assessed the consequences of C&R on golden dorado captured by anglers on the Juramento River in Salta, Argentina. This evaluation examined physical injury, physiological stress, reflex impairment, and short term post-release behavior to develop a clear set of evidence-based best practices for C&R. In addition, the Juramento River has limited resources for formal enforcement of angling practices. Consequently, the second manuscript of this thesis surveyed the social-ecological factors that predict anglers’ willingness to play important sanctioning roles (i.e. self-policing) to improve best practices adoption. We obtained results that showed a combination of intrinsic values, demographics, and fishing practices predicted anglers’ willingness to to sanction others. Taken together, the two body chapters of this thesis highlight the important role of addressing both ecological and social barriers to conservation in C&R fisheries.

Creating identity in the face of the Other: A Levinian reading of Luis Vélez de Guevara's La serrana de la VeraJensen, Elizabeth Anne 29 May 2020 (has links)
Among the works of theater of the Spanish Golden Age which feature a mujer varonil, Luis Vélez de Guevara's play, La serrana de la Vera (1613), is particularly provocative. The intensity and ambiguity of the dual nature of its female protagonist, Gila, has been the subject of much recent scholarly investigation. The staging of the play lends itself to a Levinian reading, a new approach to this particular text and theater of the Golden Age in general. Emmanuel Levinas moves beyond metaphysics, phenomenology and intentionality to posit ethics as first philosophy. Levinas explains that the face of the Other is a revelation before which my own presence is an epiphany and summons me into an ethical relationship before I am aware of my own being. A correct ethical relationship is maintained only when the Other is allowed her absolute alterity, otherwise the Other is subsumed into the matrix of the Self and the result is suffering. A Levinian reading of La serrana de la Vera moves beyond exploring systems of class and gender and discovers that the suffering in the play can be traced to face-to-face encounters in which individuals are unable or unwilling to truly see the face of the Other.

Golden Lane Estate : A Real Part of the City / Golden Lane Estate : en integrerad del av stadenHildingsson, Karin January 2011 (has links)
This thesis proposes changes to the Golden Lane Estate in central London to integrate the public spaces within the estate with the surrounding city[M1] . The Golden[M2] Lane Estate is a modernist housing complex consisting of nine residential buildings with 564 flats. It was built as a council house project in 1952-1962 to satisfy the housing need after the Second World War. Current observations show that the public spaces at the Golden Lane Estate are mostly empty and spread over different levels increasing the spatial separation. Residents use the large open spaces for transit to or from their flats and visitors are rarely attracted. The modernist layout, where few people share space in front of the entrances to their flats, have affected the perceived ownership of public space at Golden Lane. It is neither perceived as private nor fully public. I have assumed that the residential buildings should stay intact. They are architecturally and historically valuable and serve their purpose well. The flats are popular and the estate was listed in 1992. The Golden Lane Leisure Centre is situated in the middle of the estate. In the listing record it is described as a chief example of the architects’ belief that a housing development should not just be a collection of flats but a real part of the city; it provides welcome facilities for those who live outside the estate as well as for residents. By reviving the Leisure Centre and turning unused garages into offices the two western public spaces are activated and restructured to be attractive to residents and visitors again. The revenue from the commercial spaces can finance an upgrade of the eastern public spaces to be a calm oasis where residents can realise their gardening dreams or office workers have their lunch. Today’s Golden Lane Estate can become a real part of the city with four attractive places adding value for residents, workers and visitors.

Demokratizace v Evropě od 1972 do 2000: proč ve většině případů nevedla k válce? Komparativní případová studie metodou mlhavé množiny / Democratization in Europe between 1972 and 2002: Why it did not lead to war? Comparative case study based on fuzzy set methodBrázová, Věra - Karin January 2012 (has links)
The thesis focuses on European countries which underwent so-called partial democratization in the last quarter of the 20th century. It starts from the polemic with Mansfield and Snyder who claim that a (partial) democratization leads to war. The development in Europe of the last quarter of the 20th century, however, seems to contradict this notion. The aim of the thesis is, thus, to contribute to the debate of war-proneness of democratizing states by answering the following question: What caused that the democratization did not lead to war in many cases? Due to the nature of the research question as well as to the number of cases (i.e. 20) the method applied here is qualitative comparative analysis using the so-called fuzzy set method. The application of this method as such is a secondary aim of the thesis. Possible causal conditions of the absence of war which are under study here also derive mostly from the conclusions made by Mansfield and Snyder. The main focus is put on the so-called golden parachute. Among other causes are strong institutions - conceptualized here as weak and weakened executive, political integration into international community, duration of independent statehood and at least some experience with democracy - and developed economy - conceptualized through GDP, economic...

Zlatý kruh fundraisingu / Golden Circle of FundraisingFreimann, Petr January 2015 (has links)
Fundraising is one of the most critical disciplines regarding the nongovernmental organization's market nowadays. Those who will master it are going to win the competition for the sustainability and freedom through the partnerships with the (major) donors. This thesis defines core of this process, it means the relationship between the NGO and it's fundraiser, and subsequently, between the fundraiser and any potential donor. Moreover, we are going to talk about the behavioral economy and couple of ways how we can use it in terms of Fundraising. Then the last part describes a bit from the Guerrilla marketing cuisine, as we can't do anything properly since we don't have any publicity about it.
