The early Seleucids, their gods and their coinsErickson, Kyle Glenn January 2009 (has links)
This thesis argues that the iconography on Seleucid coins was created in order to appeal to the various ethnic groups within the empire and thereby reinforced the legitimacy of the dynasty. It first examines the iconography of Seleucus I and argues that as Seleucus became more secure in his rule he began to develop a new iconography that was a blend of Alexander’s and his own. This pattern changed under Antiochus I. He replaced the Zeus of Alexander and of Seleucus with Apollo-on-the-omphalos. At approximately the same time, a dynastic myth of descent from Apollo was created and promulgated. It is argued that in addition to the traditional view that Apollo was readily identifiable to the Greco-Macedonians within the empire he was also accessible to the Babylonians through the god Nabû and to the Persians as a Greek (or Macedonian) version of the reigning king. This ambiguity made Apollo an ideal figure to represent the multi-ethnic ruling house. This also explains the dynasty’s reluctance to deviate from the iconography established by Antiochus I. This thesis continues to explore the role of Apollo and other gods in creating an iconography which represented Seleucid power ending with the reign of Antiochus III. This thesis also incorporates the numismatic representations of the king as divine into the debate on ruler cult. This evidence suggests that the Seleucids may have had some form of ruler cult before the reign of Antiochus III.

The Circulation of Greek Federal CoinageDi Maria, Cassius 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this discussion is to examine the coins from a selection of both Classical and Hellenistic Greek federal states in order to identify potential patterns in how the coins were used. This is done through an in-depth analysis of coin hoard data, focusing on hoards which contain the coins from a league alongside coins from poleis within that league, taking into account hoard contents, approximate deposit date, and the hoard findspot. This data is then compared to the data from hoards containing coins from the poleis of a league, regardless of whether the hoards contained coins from the league or not.
The study finds that, while each league examined is unique, certain patterns can be identified. The leagues typically mint coins not just to the same standard as their poleis, but in the same denominations, such as the triobols of the Achaean League and her member-poleis. The hoards containing coins issued from a league show a strong preference for regional circulation, which is highlighted when juxtaposed with the hoards containing the civic coinage, which have findspots across the ancient Mediterranean world. This shows that the coins minted by the leagues served a separate and more regional purpose than the coins the poleis were minting. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

D.Litt. et Phil. / The fundamental axle of this work is the educational and ideological policy during the years 1833-1862 concerning the secondary education. That’s to say, it is attempted the research and presentation all those of factors that directly or indirectly are involved in the molding/shaping and organization of the secondary education during King’s Othon reign, something which is imprinted both on the educational speech, and on the particular school activity. Specifically, the related laws and circulars are presented and the significance or the possibilities of application are evaluated. Further more, the way of acceptance or their reaction to them is located. This also has a special meaning, because during this period the steady basis of secondary education of Greek nation is formed. This is proved by the way of the formation and organization to a great degree development of the school plant. Thinking so, the basic matters and work inquiries, which are mentioned to European lending and domestic needs, the educational uniformity, the legislative frame and thoughts, the United organization of the secondary main circle of the circular education, the school liturgy according to regions of the Greek country and the by chance particularities, the orientation of the religions professional education, the education of Greek women, teachers, school children, pedagogic instructive teaching and educational task. Documents as primary sources were developed and kept in the General files of state “mainly in Kapodistrias’ and king Othon’s files” in the historic and ethnological society of Greece, in private files and collections. At the same time, those days what was written in the press was searched and was seriously taken into account as well as the existing bibliography. Finally the work was structured into eleven parts. The first part is mentioned to the conceptual and historic frame and what is related to the educational operation as well as the school work analyzed there. The second part includes what there was in Greece before 1833, mainly in Kapodistrias’ government. In the next part (c) entitled “The institutional operation in the secondary Education” the laws, thoughts and philosophy, directions and articles are analyzed. The foundation and operation both of Greek schools and high schools are the contents of fourth part. In the fifth part there are the economic possibilities and resources of the Medium Education and explicit information is given for the financial grants, the housing school problem and the luck in supervisory material. The next part concerns the common inferior education of Greek girls and as a rule the limited possibilities that they had for attending the courses of secondary education. The syntax and development of the analytic programs of study as well as the teaching of lessons is the content of the seventh part. In the eighth part the synthesis of the instructive corpus, the conditions of nominated teachers, their salary, their duties and obligations are examined. It follows “9th part” a certain report to the extend of school potential, registration conditions of students in Greek schools and high schools, according to their geographical regions as well as their fathers’ and guardians’ social and occupational data. The teaching works, in general, studies, penalties, wages, examinations, progress, reactions etc, are evaluated in the tenth part. The work is completed by the account of discoveries and general conclusions.

The common voice of the people : the importance of proclamation in Archaic and Classical Greece with special respect to AthensBrown, Andrew January 2011 (has links)
The Common Voice of the People is a study of the importance of heralds and their proclamations to the communal life of the ancient Athenian polis in the Archaic and Classical periods. This dissertation aims to contribute to the growing body of modern scholarship on issues of public communication, the tension between literacy and orality, the importance of ritual in the ancient polis, and the varied roles and identities of Greek heralds. While there has been a great focus in recent scholarship on literacy and the written record, the official place of orality within the Classical polis has been neglected, and until now there has never been a full scale study of heralds and their place within the community. Building upon the recent scholarship on news dispersal within the polis I have explored the positions and roles of the ancient Athenian heralds within their community, and the historical progression of the herald’s position from Geometric Greece to the end of the Classical world. I have sought to determine what their importance and the importance of their proclamations was to the proper functioning of the Athenian community. Marshalling evidence from both literary and epigraphic evidence I employed these deductions about heralds to further explore the importance of both official state and unofficial citizen proclamations in the spread of news and within established ritual. This work explores a range of topics concerning polis life such as religion, civil communication, public notice, private citizen disinheritances and manumissions, international communication, Imperial Athenian attitudes towards subject allies, and the necessity of proclamation to the conferral of honor. The Common Voice of the People demonstrates the depth of integration of heralds and oral communication within a variety of aspects of polis life, the surprising absence of heralds from certain central aspects of internal Athenian communication, and the continued importance of orality as both a practical and ceremonial aspect of official forms of communication and ritual in an increasingly literate classical Athens.

The origins and nature of the Attic ephebeia to 200 B.Cde Marcellus, Henri Venable January 1994 (has links)
This thesis examines the Athenian ephebeia, from its creation to 200 B.C. The primary aim of the study is to examine the forces which led to the perception of a need for the ephebeia and which influenced its creation. After describing the institution and then investigating the available evidence for its foundation date, I argue that the "formal ephebeia" was created in 335 B.C. and was substantially different in form from anything which had preceded it. There were, however, some antecedent aspects of the ephebeia which can be traced to earlier times. The following two chapters examine forces in the fifth and early fourth century which contributed to the creation of the ephebeia. The first is an examination of Greek military innovation in the fourth century and of new Athenian defensive policy. The second investigates a "discourse" of educational thought which was present in the intellectual circles of Athens in the fourth century, the nature of which can be found in writings of the "Socratic" philosophers. In the fifth chapter I descrive the environment of "Lycurgan Athens" and argue that the ephebeia was a deliberately "invented tradition" which suited its ideological context. The final chapter examines all available evidence for the history of the organization from 322 to 200 B.C., charting a transformation of the institution. There are two appendices: one on the demography of late fourth century Athens and its relationship to the ephebeia, the other on the life-dates of Menander and the year of his ephebate. There are also two catalogues of inscriptions. The first provides all fourth century ephebic inscriptions since the publication of Reinmuth's collection (or changes to those). The second provides all published third century ephebic inscriptions and some from the early second century.

This thesis explores Pindar's relationship to his audiences. Part One demonstrates how his victory odes take into account an audience present at their premiere performance and also secondary audiences throughout space and time. It argues that getting the most out of the epinicians involves simultaneously assuming the perspectives of both their initial and subsequent audiences. Part Two describes how Pindar uses his audiences' knowledge of other lyric to situate his work both within an immanent poetic history and within a contemporary poetic culture. It sets out Pindar's vision of the literary world past and present and suggests how this framework shapes an audience's experience of his work. Part Three explains how Pindar's victory odes made lucid sense as linear unities to fifth-century Greeks imbued in the traditions of choral lyric. An annotated text shows how each sentence in the epinician corpus forms part of a coherent chain of rational discourse.

The Annales of the Roman poet, Quintus Ennius, was not an isolated example of an historical epic. Other poets before Ennius' time had written epics of various types, and different sorts of poems that dealt with historical
or national material, and some of these influenced Ennius.
This study will consider Ennius' relationship to the Homeric epics, and show how he imitated them in form and style. The writings of other Greek poets who preceded Ennius will be examined to determine whether they might also have influenced the Roman poet. The works of the two Roman poets who wrote before Ennius will be looked at, and some observations made about other historical materials that may have been available for the poet to use in his work. Finally, the place of Quintus Ennius and his Annales in the historiography
of Rome will be discussed.
The Annales seems to have been unique in that it was an epic poem which encompassed the whole history of the Roman people from the earliest times right down to the period in which the poet lived. Other poets before Ennius had dealt with some aspects of their cities' backgrounds, including mythological and legendary material. This thesis looks to re-evaluate the East Greek intellectual view of non-Greeks in
the middle to late fifth century. To do this I examine how ethnic difference is understood
in the Hippocratic treatise Airs, Waters, Places (as well as the rest of the fifth-century
Hippocratic corpus) and Herodotus' Histories, which together represent the new
ethnographic thought of the fifth century. I will argue that neither author understood there
to be any essential difference between Greeks and non-Greeks, nor represented non-
Greeks as anti-Greeks, as many scholars today hold. Furthermore, I will argue that the
idea of a Greek/barbarian dichotomy was to a considerable extent a construction of
Athenian ideology, which stood in contrast to an East Greek cosmopolitanism that
understood ethnic difference not in terms of differences in nature but of cultural variation

Proportion and Apportionment: A Study in Homeric ValuesPhillips, Owen 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to elucidate Homeric aesthetical, ethical, and political values; the relation between these values and those of the polis; and what this relation tells us about the place of Homeric society in our account of the development of the polis. I argue that the system of value that we find in the Iliad and the Odyssey is predicated on the ideas of portion, proportion, and proper distribution. These ideas, I contend, animate the Homeric conception of justice and of appropriateness. Further, I argue that this system shares much ground with the middling ideology of the polis, but is different from this ideology in respect of the discourse of sōphrosunē and of being mesos/metrios. From this, I maintain that the Homeric worldview reflects the social and material conditions of a world that shares the basic values of the polis but is not as sociologically complex as the polis. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)
