Through the Woods and Underground: Italo Calvino between Ecology and Folklore

This dissertation offers an ecocritical reading of Italo Calvino’s Fiabe italiane, a collection of traditional oral tales published by Einaudi in 1956, and argues that the two-hundred folktales function as a repository of ecological motifs, showing the relationship between humans and the environment as not necessarily exploitative, but rather as a relationship of coexistence and entanglement. The dissertation shows that the critical language that Calvino uses, influenced by a long tradition of folklore studies, rests on two key metaphors to express belonging in a political and national community: rootedness and groundedness. Through the reading of several tales, I show that the folktales themselves actually reveal a fabulist ecology concerned much more with entanglement and enmeshment with the natural landscape, and offer imaginative tools to recover, at the time of the Anthropocene, an enchanted view of the environment. In the first chapter, I argue that the morphology of the folktale that Calvino draws from the Russian formalist Vladimir Propp rests on a conception of the folktale as a plant that can be dissected with the same tools used by a botanist. I show how observations that Calvino makes about tales of metamorphosis of women into plants betray an investment in rootedness as a metaphor for belonging in a political and national community. Drawing from material ecocriticism, I argue that plants, rather than signposts for stasis and belonging, can be read as signs of mixture, coexistence, and symbiosis with the environment. I also argue that the frequent metamorphosis of female characters into plants points toward a trans-corporeal conception of subjectivity. In the second chapter, I show how Calvino contradictorily engages with the legacy of the Brothers Grimm, for whom the forest stands as a metaphor of the lost unity of the German nation. Through a close reading of “Hansel and Gretel,” and Calvino’s rewriting of this tale, “Pulcino,” I show that forests, be they material or fictional, can also be read as environments that preserve an agrarian ecology of subsistence, populated by othered figures such as witches and ogres that depend on a non-exploitative relationship with the environment of the forest. This ecology is preserved in Calvino’s own Marcovaldo, a collection of modern urban fairy-tales that he authored in the same period. Ultimately, I conceive of trees as markers of deep time and connectors between human and geological history. In the third chapter, I turn to the second metaphor identified by my project, groundedness. I briefly reconstruct the cultural milieu in which Calvino operated, and the development of postwar folklore studies after the publication of Antonio Gramsci’s Quaderni del carcere. Therefore, I examine the “Observations on Folklore,” showing how much of Gramsci’s theoretical language engages metaphorically with geology. Calvino himself is indebted to this idea of stratification. His folktales, especially “Cola Pesce,” then become a site where human history and geologic time intersect, and many stories function as repositories of folk knowledge about the telluric landscape of Southern Italy and about the porosity of humans and stones. In the conclusion, I offer an overview of the material and I consider Calvino’s revisiting, in the 1970s, of his earlier folkloric work and how his thoughts on storytelling and belonging evolve in the course of two decade, arguing that they constitute a literary ecology.

Les contes populaires véhiculent des croyances et représentations des sociétés traditionnelles, parmi lesquelles l'idée qu'il existe, en même temps que le monde des hommes, un autre monde, les deux étant étroitement imbriqués et perméables l'un à l'autre.<br />Ce thème constitue la base des principales conceptions de l'univers des peuples indo-européens et exprime le sentiment des hommes d'être entourés de puissances inexplicables. Il sera analysé dans les Contes de l'enfance et du foyer des frères Grimm (1812-1815 pour la 1ère édition), et les Contes populaires russes d'A. N. Afanassiev (1855-63). Les deux recueils, qui seront étudiés dans leur langue d'origine, partagent un même objectif : le collectage des productions de la poésie populaire, Afanassiev ayant lui-même placé son travail dans la lignée de celui des Grimm. D'autres textes viendront enrichir l'analyse, notamment les romans et visions du moyen-âge européen. <br />La méthode adoptée est comparatiste et relève de l'anthropologie culturelle, dans la mesure où le corpus choisi permet une mise en regard de deux aspects de la pensée et de la culture européennes du XIXème siècle : le thème de l'autre monde jouera le rôle de révélateur des mentalités populaires. <br />Le classement des occurrences de l'autre monde en fonction de ses localisations débouchera sur une typologie visant à dégager les grandes tendances de chaque aire culturelle ainsi que les variantes écotypiques dans la représentation de l'autre monde, non seulement sur le plan des motifs, mais aussi sur celui des techniques narratives et de l'organisation du récit. L'étude traitera donc également la question des genres auxquels se rattachent les différents textes.

The thesis deals with a classic fairy tale of the 19th century, in particular with the comparison of chosen categories of motifs (animal motifs, food motifs, power conflicts, generation conflicts, gender motifs) in selected fairy tales written by brothers Grimm, Božena Němcová and Karel Jaromír Erben. The original text is the German one, which is consequently compared to the Czech one. The thesis deals with the fairy tales Die weiße Schlange (compared to Karel Jaromír Erben's fairy tale Zlatovláska) and Frau Holle (compared to the text written by Božena Němcová O dvanácti měsíčkách). The goal of the thesis is to ascertain to what extent the depiction of the chosen motifs differ in German and Czech variants, or to what extent they correspond. The used methods are comparison, analogy and analysis, followed by synthesis of discovered knowledge.

This dissertation has two main aims. The first is to describe or specify the poetics of "own" and "foreign" space in literary work in general and in the fairy tales of K. J. Erben, the Grimm brothers, B. Němcová or L. Bechstein; the second is to analyse and compare the poetics in three spatial pairs the "own" and "foreign" spaces in relation to the main character of the above-mentioned fairy tales representing, namely in the spaces of home and journey, the living and the dead or welfare and poverty. Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters.
