______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation aims at analysing the evidence of the relationship between the myth of the Exército de São Sebastião (Army of St. Sebastian, the Catholic martyr) present in the Brazil’s Contestado rebellion (1912-1916), and the Sebastianista myth: the belief in the return of king D. Sebastião, missing in the battle of Alcácer Quibir, 1578. Through a process of reworking of the symbols and religious meanings, in the Contestado not Hidden king (D. Sebastião) anymore, but the Catholic martyr (St. Sebastian) is the one who had entered in scene in the command of a celestial Army to restore the monarchy.
