The author of this thesis Representation of the hero and the antihero in the British fantasy literature deals with the typology of characters within the genre. She focuses on the distinction between a hero and an antihero and discribes the characteristic features of their representation in the pieces written by British authors, including particularly the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling, P. Pullman, N. Gaiman and T. Pratchett. The theoretical background is provided by the publication The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell and a book titled The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious. Gained pieces of information are confronted with the texts named above.

The Amazon goes nova : considering the female hero in speculative fictionDonaldson, Eileen 09 November 2004 (has links)
The female hero has been marginalized through history, to the extent that theorists, from Plato and Aristotle to those of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, state that a female hero is impossible. This thesis argues that she is not impossible. Concentrating on the work of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, a heroic standard is proposed against which to measure both male and female heroes. This heroic standard suggests that a hero must be human, must act, must champion a heroic ethic and must undertake a quest. Should a person, male or female, comply with these criteria, that person can be considered a hero. This thesis refutes the patriarchal argument against female heroism, proposing that the argument is faulty because it has at its base a constricting male-constructed myth of femininity. This myth suggests that women are naturally docile and passive, not given to aggression and heroism, but rather to motherhood and adaptation to adverse circumstances, it does not reflect the reality of women’s natural abilities or capacity for action. Indeed, with the rise of contemporary feminist discourse the patriarchal myth of femininity is being demystified and, without the myth of femininity to constrain her, the female hero is now re-emerging in certain areas of cultural expression. The examples of female heroes discussed in this study are taken from speculative fiction, encompassing the genres of both science fiction and fantasy. Speculative fiction, which has a propensity for challenging the status quo and questioning common societal assumptions, provides the perfect platform for women writers to confront feminist issues and launch the female hero. The female hero challenges the patriarchal claim that all heroes must be masculine, she defies patriarchal power structures and she demands a re-evaluation of women’s capabilities. The female hero gives women an example of heroic activity to emulate, in place of the ‘angel in the house’ that women have had to bow to for so long. The works discussed in this thesis cover a range of authors, from those of outspoken contemporary feminist, Joanna Russ, to early speculative works like those of C.L. Moore. Rowling, and stared by the character Harry Potter have been studied by the
contemporaneous Criticism while the image spectacular society s concepts.
Among these concepts there are the saga, and the Greek hero, as structures of
the myth, and both are restructured by media mechanism action in favor of the
fabled contamination. In this study, the saga occupies the center of a heroic
circular action that remodels the hero concept, and also gives us the updated
decadent hero while image integrated to the mass society system. In a ludic
point of view, the series Harry Potter (seven books) are about sharing the hero s
(Harry Potter) qualities in counterpoint to the anti-hero Voldemort, who brings us
the construction of the intrigue, the effects of the dual decadent nature game:
bad vs. good, once humanized by the marvelous multimidia contemporaneous
element. In this way, the marvelous becomes the support roll in the adventures
of this hero in the gaps created by him through the remodeling saga. Under the
communicative perspective of the fanfiction, the potternian fiction corroborates
to the decadent heroic structure, by using a mixture of mass reading, and mass
writing into the classic saga, extended to the author-mass, and to the readermass,
creating the parenthood of the modern saga. This communicative link of
the reprogrammed saga made by way of magic and witchcraft element shave
lead up us to the study of this central theme, in three stages: the fiction and

protagonizados pela personagem Harry Potter, têm sido estudados pela crítica
contemporânea sob o suporte de conceitos dados pela sociedade da imagem
espetacular. Entre estes conceitos figuram: a saga e o herói grego, como
estruturas do mito, ambos em reestruturação pela ação dos dispositivos
midiáticos em trabalho de contaminação fabular. Neste estudo, a saga ocupa o
centro de um círculo de ações heroicas que, ao mesmo tempo em que
modelam o conceito de heroicidade, atualizam o arquétipo do herói decadente
enquanto imagem, integrado ao sistema da sociedade de massa. Em operação
lúdica, a Série Harry Potter (7 Livros) concentra-se na partilha das qualidades
do herói Harry Potter em contraponto com o anti-herói Voldemort, assimilando,
na composição da intriga, os efeitos do jogo bem vs. mal em sua natureza dual
decadente, uma vez humanizada pelo elemento maravilhoso multimidiático
contemporâneo. Para tanto, o maravilhoso passa a ser o coadjuvante das
aventuras desse herói, nas fissuras por ele geradas pela via da remodelação
da saga. Sob a perspectiva comunicacional da fanfiction, a ficção potterniana
corrobora com a estruturação do herói decadente, por meio da mixagem leitura
e escrita de massa à saga clássica, extensiva ao autor-massa e leitor-massa,
compondo a parentela da saga moderna degenerada. Esse nexo
comunicacional da saga reprogramada pela magia e feitiçaria nos propiciou o
estudo da temática central em três momentos: A intertextualidade fiction e

Holding Out for a Shero : Study of the Female Hero in Four Urban Fantasy NovelsSödergren, Sara January 2011 (has links)
This essay analyses the female hero in four urban fantasy novels, and evaluates several examples of the genre to find out whether or not the heroes can be found to be "sheroes" or traditionally male heroes. The study outlines the myth of the hero's journey and gives examples of the masculine as well as the feminine approach and how they apply to the four novels. The attributes of the hero are also reviewed and put into perspective within the studied material. It appears that while it is often argued that the urban fantasy genre has strong woman protagonists, the heroes therein are not "sheroes" since they behave like typically male heroes.

Mötet mellan människor är något som kan vara spännande och få en att upptäcka något nytt i livet, likaså i film. Dessa möten mellan karaktärer gör att handlingen drivs framåt och skapar ett spännande interagerande mellan karaktärer. I detta kandidatarbete har vi valt att fokusera på mötet mellan hjälten och skurken, oftast två starka och viktiga karaktärer inom film. Karaktärsrollerna är hämtade från Voglers The writer’s Journey (1997). För att få en bredare bild av hur rollerna kan se ut i film har vi valt att analysera två olika filmer i olika genre, filmerna vi valt är Die Hard (1988) och Alien (1979). Vi har tagit hjälp av analysmodellen som presenteras i From Antz to Titanic - A students guide to film analysis (2000) och format modellen till vårt passande. En av delarna i analysen fokuserar på hur de tekniska aspekterna i scener kan hjälpa till att föra berättelsen vidare. Grundat i undersökningen har en kompletterande gestaltning i form av en film skapats där vi har använt oss av karaktärsrollerna som vi analyserat. / Meetings between people can be exciting and make you discover something new, also in movies. Meetings between the characters drives the plot forward, and create exciting interaction between the characters. We have chosen to focus on meetings between the hero and the villain, two strong and important character roles in the film. The character roles are taken from Vogler, The Writer's Journey (1997). To get a broader picture of how roles may appear in film, we have chosen to analyze two different films in different genres, the films we have chosen are Die Hard (1988) and Alien (1979). We have used the analytical model presented in From Antz to Titanic - A student's guide to film analysis (2000) and formed the model to our fitting. One of the parts of the analysis focuses on the technical aspects of the scenes that can help move the story forward. Based on our survey of character roles and meetings between them, we have created a movie to portray this.

Diploma thesis is capturing key aspects of transformation from sport events to media events. Theoretical part clarified concept of media events by Dayan and Katz and applied this theory on sport events. Idea of banal nationalism from Michael Billig as a force which sustain and reproduce national states was examined in next part. Last theoretical basis of thesis is consisting of mythological level of media content with focus on sociocultural phenomenons of modern age. Modern myths such as hero archetype are pointed out through sports news. Research is based on facts resulting from theoretical part: banal nationalism and hero archetype are commonly used in coverage of sport events, especialy international ones. Analysis of media coverage of Olympic games in London brings these cathegories for banal nationalism: war methaphores, ego trip, stereotype, national heroes, state symbols and linguistics means refering to deic center of nation: pronouns and familiar salutations. For hero archetype these categories are set: birth, danger, heroism, challenge, enemies, sacrifice and adoration.

Female Resistance in a World of Epic Heroes and Legendary Adventures : A feminist reading of Rick Riordan’s The Lost Hero, inspired by Luce Irigaray’s “The Power of Discourse and the Subordination of the Feminine”Lovela, Cecilia January 2019 (has links)
Literature is an important part of the curriculum of Swedish secondary school and The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan is a popular novel among teenagers in Stockholm. This creates an opportunity to look closer at the novel, and to investigate the narrative’s discussion of the female, and in this particular case, its depictions of the female characters. This essay will show that by reading the novel with a feminist approach, inspired by the work of Luce Irigaray, the narrative reveals cultural aspects that might work well as a ground for discussions in the classroom. This essay considers how the narrative allows for opportunities of female resistance. Without replacing the male on the frontier of adventure, and without betraying their femininity, the female characters of the novel manage to change the power dynamic of how they are perceived. The female protagonist, Piper, works as a gatekeeper for the female resistance, and eliminates – for the cause – unbeneficial female behaviours. A feminist approach is beneficial to the diversity that is expected in Swedish secondary school. In addition to already existing research on Riordan’s work, this essay helps justify why The Lost Hero is a good literary alternative for the classroom.

Ao verificarmos como a paisagem é retratada nas aventuras dos super-heróis, buscamos interpretar as representações do espaço - e se possível os espaços de representação - e como elas ratificam e/ou legitimam os valores e idéias da sociedade que, direta ou indiretamente, as geraram: a sociedade americana/capitalista. A contribuição mais evidente da pesquisa consiste no fato de abordar uma temática ainda pouco explorada dentro dos estudos geográficos e ao mesmo tempo, estabelecer uma possível ponte interdisciplinar com a área de conhecimento da Comunicação / This paper provides a way to interpret geographic space trough the use of super-hero comics - mainly Batman - highlighting the importance of cultural icons and the comic book language in the modern world. We attempted to demonstrate that the landscape itself, as well as what this landscape represents, confirms or legitimizes the values and ideas of american/capitalist society which, directly or indirectly, generates them. The most important contribution of this paper lies in its application of the little used theme of super-hero comics in geographic studies. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo da representação do herói na obra literária As Andorinhas, de Paulina Chiziane, publicada em Maputo, em 2008, e no Brasil, no ano de 2013. A obra de três contos inspira-se em figuras históricas importantes à constituição da identidade moçambicana. Os heróis nacionais tratados na ficção da autora, entretanto, são narrados como personagens provenientes do universo mitológico. Com o propósito de compreender a finalidade da obra dentro do contexto social e histórico de Moçambique, este trabalho analisa o herói tanto pela sua representação simbólica, como por sua atuação no processo de desenvolvimento de uma identidade nacional em contraposição ao sistema colonial e suas mazelas. Portanto, o tema da busca da liberdade permeia a trilogia de contos e coloca o herói como o representante das transformações sociais no tempo histórico e representante das divindades no tempo mitológico. / The present paper aims to study the representation of the hero in the literary work The Swallows, from Paulina Chiziane, published in Maputo (2008) and in Brazil (2013). The short stories are inspired by important historical figures to the formation of Mozambican identity. These national heroes, however, are narrated as characters from the mythological universe. In order to understand the purpose of the literary work within the social and historical context of Mozambique, this paper analyzes the hero both for its symbolic representation, as for its role in the formation of a national identity in opposition to the colonial system and its ills process. Therefore, the theme of the pursuit of freedom permeates this trilogy and puts the hero as the representative of the social transformations in historical time and representative of the deities in the mythological time.
