Toward a catholic feminist practical theology of hope after domestic violence

Theuring, Ashley Elizabeth 21 June 2018 (has links)
Liberation, womanist, and feminist theologians re-imagine hope in light of suffering in a variety of communities, via the narratives of cross and resurrection. They insist that hope is shaped by its context and always practiced in response to particular suffering. This dissertation takes the experiences of women who have lived through domestic violence as the locus theologicus in which to investigate the question: “What constitutes hope after domestic violence?” A Catholic practical theological examination of House of Peace, a Latina domestic violence shelter, recasts hope after domestic violence as the practiced communal embodiment of an open and ambiguous future. The first chapter presents domestic violence as a theological problem, tracking the past half century of feminist and trauma theologies’ questions and concerns in regards to domestic violence. Chapter two provides a survey of liberation theologies of hope (Metz, Moltmann, Sobrino, Isasi-Díaz, Haight, Johnson) and highlights the importance of hope as a communally embodied practice profoundly shaped by its context. The third chapter turns to the insights of womanist theologians (Williams, Terrell, Copeland, and Crawford) who conceptualize hope in the midst of Black women’s experiences of race- and gender-based violence. The fourth chapter investigates Latina theologians, Ivone Gebara and Nancy Pineda-Madrid, who present hope as what emerges through embodied practices of resistance. Their vision of fragile redemption yields insights for a constructive feminist reading of the Gospel of Mark’s “Empty Tomb” resurrection account. Chapter five re-imagines the “Empty Tomb” narrative and hope through the healing narratives and practices of the House of Peace, highlighting the possibility for everyday practices and relationships to mediate hope. The community at House of Peace practices the biblical story differently, thus challenging a singular, extrinsic understanding of the crucifixion and resurrection. They renew the concept and practice of hope—emphasizing embodiment and imagination—in alignment with both Latina and Catholic commitments. This examination of contextual communal practices and narrations of hope after domestic violence contributes to the fields of Catholic practical theology, feminist theology, and trauma theology.

The role of caregiver can trigger a series of impacts on the physical and mental health. However, hope can be psychosocial feature of these caregivers to deal with the difficulties on the experience of care. The objective this study is identify factors associated with the hope of elderly caregivers of elderly. This is a quantitative study, descriptive and crosssectional. The sample consisted of 301 subjects who played role of caregivers registered in the Family Health Units in a city in São Paulo state. Data were collected through individual interviews, using the following instruments: Characterization of the Subjects; Herth Hope Index (HHI); Pinto Pais - Ribeiro Spirituality Scale (PP-RSS); Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS); Evaluation of Fragility; Perceived Stress Scale; Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); Inventory of Coping Strategies; Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZBI). Analyses were performed using multivariate statistics (multinomial logistic regression). The results showed that the mean score of EEH was 40.9 (± 5.4). As for PP-RSS, mean the belief domains and hope / optimism were 3.85 and 3.39, respectively. The most widely used coping strategy was "the expression of negative emotions", averaging 19.8 points. In GDS, the majority (77.8%) had no depressive symptoms. As for the perceived stress, the average score was 19.0 points. In the MMSE, the majority (61%) showed evidence of cognitive impairment. The average obtained in the ZBI was 17.9 and in the evaluation of fragility, the majority (56.8%) was pre-fragile. With regard to factors associated with hope, according to the regression model were: spirituality, stress, old age, caregiver without income, not receive help affective / emotional and care for 6- 10 hours a day. Therefore highlights the need for public policies and care actions to these elderly caregivers elderly, as well as interventions aimed at stimulating hope with emphasis in the associated factors identified.

Sons de um futuro impreciso: a utopia dos Ensaios de Josà Saramago / Sounds of an inaccurate future: the utopia of Ensaios by Josà Saramago

Francisco Wilton Lima Cavalcante 09 September 2015 (has links)

A produÃÃo de sonhos dos meninos da Casa Grande / Prodution of the dreams of young people in Casa Grande

Josà Tancredo Lobo 05 July 2010 (has links)
We live in a time of hopelessness, a world inside out to utopias, in a lack of hope. The promise of better life and abundant that the capitalist system, with its consumer society, has pledged not been fulfilled in its fullness in modernity, or rather not for everyone. Despair, existential frustration, violence became urgent topics among the concerns of various knowledge areas. In this particular field is part of this work, which aimed to understand the production of the dreams of young participants of the FundaÃÃo Casa Grande, located in Nova Olinda, CearÃ. "Dreams" here understood as existential dimensions of the projects, therefore, to have well agreed. The doctoral research was developed within the Programa de PÃs-GraduaÃÃo em EducaÃÃo, Faculdade de EducaÃÃo (FACED), Universidade Federal do Cearà (UFC), the line of research Social Movements, Popular Education and the School, specifically in the thematic area Education Environment, Youth, Art and Spirituality, under the guidance of Professor Ercilia Maria Braga de Olinda. The complexity of the issue required a constructive approach in which theory, methodology and experiences of those involved (the researcher and subject) were woven together in a perception of wholeness. The context in which the object is inserted in an interwoven social and economic relationships and cultural special. Nova Olinda is a small town with HDI, according to the IBGE, the lowest in the region of Cariri. There she finds the institution that houses the young subjects of research. The Casa Grande Foundation Memorial Human Kariri - NGO created in 1992, purports to be "a school of cultural management that has as its mission to educate children and youth programs through the backwoods of Memory, Communication, Arts and Tourism." The subjects of this study collaborators were among the young participants of that institution. The theoretical mediation on intellectuals as Zygmunt Bauman, Boaventura Sousa Santos, Marie-Christine Josso, Antonio Novoa, Ercilia Braga, Alfonzo Farms, Peter Singer, Enrique Dussel, Humberto Maturana, Josà Tavares, Paulo Freire, Ernst Bloch, Erich Fromm and others. The methodological approach was interdisciplinary; used to search (auto) biography, both in theoretical and in the procedural aspects, the history of the research can be called a qualitative, collaborative, formative and existential modus how to produce science in which the core is in the person and human life as a major source of all existence. Techniques were used as narrative interview, circles and reflective observation of areas of the organization studied. The narratives expressed youth ways to be hopeful about what-does-not-come-to-be. Showed the action of resilient youth. The thesis is a reflection on the production of dreams as an opportunity to build - in the words of Ernst Bloch - what-does-not-become-good; at last, demonstrate that to dream is a way to contrapose the determination of destiny.

Quête du passé, quête du sens : Gwenaëlle Aubry ("Personne"), Michel Del Castillo ("De père français", "Rue des Archives"), Pierre Bergounioux ("La Toussaint"), Pierre Michon ("Vies minuscules") / Quest of the past, search for meaning : Gwenaëlle Aubry ("Personne"), Michel Del Castillo ("De père français", "Rue des Archives"), Pierre Bergounioux ("La Toussaint"), Pierre Michon ("Vies minuscules")

Abroug, Sana 23 May 2016 (has links)
Thrown into a world that seems without order or coherence, in the story parentage fate of the narrator seems tragically insignificant. Prevented between words and words kill, past struggles to rebuild and life becomes a painful ordeal in the grip of an indecipherable and legacy to wear. The stories of Gwenaëlle Aubry, Michel Del Castillo, Pierre Bergounioux and Pierre Michon raise the same existential question about the heritage and freedom. From these experiences, we do not note that because of the similarities in its limits and in its aspiration to freedom, man can qualify differently. The analysis we have conducted various forms of reminiscences and different resources mobilized for the search for meaning shows that the definition of man depends not only on accidents of individual or collective history. It depends on the force of reason and freedom. We have proposed an analysis that presents a different approach to what is commonly done for parentage stories, an analysis that is released from the limited reading that takes into account family determinism, sociological, political and historical. Our work raises awareness of testimony both reasoned and passionate about what parentage story. Beyond their differences, the personal stories we studied are joined in the struggle that replaces the first anguish optimism that justifies the being and action.

Historians on slaves: an analytical historiography of Dutch slavery at the Cape, 1652-1795

Allen, John Bernard 24 May 2010 (has links)
M.A. / The study of South African history has developed considerably over the last number of years to incorporate new ideas, approaches, and styles. However, the standard works on South African historiography continue to provide a reader with very little beyond a descriptive framework to allow historians to locate their work within the body of South African historical knowledge. This dissertation attempts to address this shortcoming by encouraging and advocating a more analytical approach to the field of historiography. Here, the approach taken is the same as that taken by Hayden White in writing his work Metahistory: The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Europe. At the same time, a stronger focus is placed on the role of historical context. To demonstrate the advantages of this type of analysis, of analytical historiography over the traditional conception of historiography, I have chosen the example of South African slavery under Dutch administration, 1652 – 1795. The question that this work then attempts to answer is: How can our understanding of South African Slave Historiography be enlightened by the use of Analytical Historiography? The work is divided into two, with the first section dealing with the theoretical and methodological requirements of the work. The second deals with the Whiteian analysis of a number of works on slavery at the Cape before 1795.1 This is followed by the final analysis and conclusion.

The historical development of geography as a subject in the schools of the Cape Province (1772-1951)

Knox, John Charles January 1959 (has links)
As the title indicates, this is a study of the historical emergence of geography as a subject in Cape schools, and covers the period 1772-1951. The account is not merely descriptive and factual, for wherever possible an attempt is made to assess the nature and scope of the geography which was taught at different periods in relation to modern, authoritative ideas concerning the pedagogic application of the subject in the school. The work as a whole is predominantly concerned with the historical development of geography in the secondary school. However, in the initial four chapters the slight and insubstantial nature of the available data precludes the possibility of differentiating between geoeraphy of primary standard and that of secondary standard, and in these early chapters all references to the subject are consequently generalized. In Chapter 5, which deals with the period during which Langham Dale was Superintendent-Genera l of Education, geography of secondary standard becomes distinguishable from that of primary standard for the first time, and from this point onwards the two are differentiated to the fullest extent possible, and the former is chiefly emphasized. The entire study is presented against a broad background of relevant, educational developments of a general nature.

An investigation into religious instruction in state high schools in the Cape Province

Penny, Alan Joseph January 1971 (has links)
From Preface: The question of religious instruction in Cape Schools first aroused my interest when I was subjected to anything but religious tnstruction during my own high school years. My desire to enquire into the whole position of religious instruction in the high school curriculum grew out of an essay on the role of religion in the education of the child which I wrote whilst reading for the B.Ed. degree. As background, I read Harold Loukes' classic Teenage Religion, and from then onwards, I felt that it was necessary to undertake an investigation of this kind in the Cape Province. My aim was not only prompted out of a desire to expose what I already knew to be an educationally and religiously unsound and unhealthy state of affairs, but more deeply because I, although an ignorant amateur in theology, am aware that too often the traditional religious foundations, poorly built by unintelligent teaching, are shaken, if not destroyed, by scientific discovery and material advancement.

The geochemistry and petrology of the Karoo andesites and associated basalts of the north-eastern Cape Province

Rumble, Keith Christopher 11 February 2013 (has links)
New geochemical data consisting of major and 15 trace element analyses are presented for 41 rocks from three andesitic and associated basaltic rock occurrences in the North Eastern Cape Province. These include the Pronksberg, Belmore and Roodehoek localities. Field evidence suggests that the three andesites were emplaced during the early stages of Karoo volcanicity. Geochemical variations within the Pronksberg and Roodehoek andesite are small, manifesting the undifferentiated nature of the magmas. Variations within the Belmore andesite are interpreted as representing fractionation of orthopyroxene, accompanied by only minor plagioclase fractionation. Differences in trace element concentrations and inter-element ratios between the andesites and associated basalts of the Pronksberg and Belmore volcanic suites precludes the possibility of the two rock types being genetically related. Geochemical differences constrain the possibility of the three andesites being cogenetic. Magmatic processes resulting in their formation are, however, thought to be similar. The differences in chemistry between the Pronksberg Basalt (High K Type) and Pronksberg Basalt (Drumbo Type) are interpreted as representing the combined influence of weathering, the presence of amygdales and the within-flow variations of alkali elements on the Pronksberg Basalt (High K Type). Similarities in petrography and chemistry justifies a correlation of the Pronksberg Basalt (Drumbo Type) with the Drumbo Basalt Member in the Barkly East area. Data for the Drumbo Basalt (This study) in the Barkly East area confirms and complements previously presented data. Normative chemistry and strontium isotope data indicate a process involving crustal assimilation or melting of crustal rocks as being the most likely explanation for the genesis of the Karoo andesites / KMBT_363 / Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

The executive government of the Cape of Good Hope, 1825-54

Fryer, Alan Kenneth January 1959 (has links)
The study of administrative processes is a relaltively new one both in the field of history and sociology. In both disciplines what is required is study of the sructure and growth of adminstrative systems and of the impact of administrative action on the community it seeks to serve and which it often provokes. In the field of history, Professor F. Tout in his chapters on administrative history ... gave new vitality and understanding to medieval studies. In the main, South African history, though probably not more so than other Commonwealth countries, has been less fortunate. Preface, p. 1.
