DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE OF A FIBRE REINFORCED COMPOSITE SAFETY SNAP-HOOK

Safety snap-hooks are a critical component of a fall-arrest system worn by individuals working at elevated heights. Current snap-hook technology has not evolved in many years, and as a result, the hooks are both heavy and conduct electricity. This project investigated the design and manufacture of a polymer-composite safety-snap-hook. The objective was to determine whether a light-weight, dielectric, composite hook can meet the safety requirements, while being manufactured at a competitive price. Several fibre arrangements were tested using current aluminium hook geometry. A research plan was designed and completed to maximize the hook strength by optimizing fibre architecture. These results were then used to design a composite hook that meets all the current CSA standards (static load, dynamic load, side and front load gate test). The design enables the hook to be completely non-conductive and lighter than the current pincer hook. Different manufacturing techniques were also considered and it was determined that both the net-shaped moulding and vacuum bag panel method were suitable techniques. It is recommended that further research be carried out to decrease the cost of the composite hook. Less expensive resin materials should be tested to determine how much strength is lost with lower grade resins. A standard test should also be developed so that hooks can be characterized for their electrical conductivity. In addition, research is required to find a process to cut the mats so that the cut-outs can be handled without falling apart, making the net-shape moulding process more suitable. Further design modifications are also needed to meet newly proposed gate regulatory standards. A study of some aspects of the breeding behaviour of Portulaca grandiflora Hook

An attempt was made to develop a true breeding strain of white double-flowered Portulaca grandiflora Hook. White double-flowered plants of two strains were bred to the second generation using single plant selections. Both single- and double-coloured flowers were introduced into the breeding programme to gain information on the breeding behaviour of flower doubleness and colour. Seed dormancy and the failure of the plants to grow in the greenhouse during the winter months resulted in prolonging the breeding programme. Methods of overcoming these delays were investigated. The results obtained from these investigations and the breeding studies are briefly as follows. Genotypically a true breeding strain of white double-flowered portulaca can be obtained but environment and somatic mutations so influence the phenotype that few, if any, of the plants are considered desirable. Multiple alleles apparently exist for colours from red to magenta and because of the small numbers of plants grown it was impossible to determine the breeding behaviour of this group. The dormant period of portulaca seed can be shortened by pre-germination chilling of the seed, soaking them in a weak solution of potassium nitrate and then germinating at alternating temperatures. Normal plant growth can be maintained throughout the winter in the greenhouse if additional light and heat are supplied to the plants. / Land and Food Systems, Faculty of / Graduate

This thesis participates in a reconsideration of English-Canadian literary critical history through a reading of the critical construction of Sheila Watson's novel, The Double Hook. The thesis examines the rhetoric by which Watson's novel has been read as central to and representative of Canada's literary cultural maturity. That maturity has been measured by such modernist formal principles as the objective correlative and the mythical method, formalist standards and tastes valorized by New Criticism and by the synchronic mythographies of Freudian psychoanalysis, structuralist anthropology, and structuralist literary criticism (such as Frye's mythopoeics). The thesis argues that a structural mechanism of sacrifice is central to the literary critical narrative about this novel; that the myth-making by which violence becomes sacred and thereby marks the establishment, redemption, or survival of culture, is founded specifically on the sacrifice of women in The Double Hook.

Modernist visual aesthetics and The double hook

This thesis examines the significant role of expressionist and minimalist visual aesthetics in the construction (imagery, structuring, language) and subsequent interpretation of Sheila Watson's The Double Hook. While Sherrill Grace's Regression & Apocalypse the groundwork for a literary expressionist reading of Watson's novel, this study elaborates the crucial links between literary and painterly expressionism in the novel and suggests Watson's critique of the expressionist aesthetic. A reading of the minimalist aesthetic, as both an extension of and an alternative to the expressionist reading of the text, emphasizes the relevance of noniconic painterly strategies to the novel and, by implication, of alternate forms of spectatorship that are demanded by the text. This study ultimately shows how Watson creatively synthesizes these extremes of modernist visual aesthetics and asks for the reader's imaginative and critical engagement with the modernist arts.

Della protein function during differential growth processes in arabidopsis

The plant hormones gibberellins (GAs) regulate multiple processes of plant development. Most of this regulation occurs at the transcriptional level, through the activity of the DELLAs, which are nuclear-localized proteins subjected to GA-mediated proteolitic degradation. DELLAs are encoded by five genes, and genetic studies show that each DELLA displays specific, but also partially overlapping roles with respect to their paralogs. In this Thesis, we have addressed two issues: (1) the contribution of DELLA multiplication to the diversification of functions controlled by GAs; and (2) the identification of direct targets regulated by DELLAs in etiolated seedlings with special attention to those involved in differential growth processes. Using combinations of mutants and transgenic lines expressing two phylogenetically distant DELLA genes (RGA and RGL2), we have found that these two DELLA proteins can perform each other's role as long as they are expressed under the reciprocal promoters, indicating that DELLA subfunctionalization relies mainly on their differential expression patterns. To identify direct DELLA targets, we have performed transcriptomic analyses of dark-grown seedlings expressing an inducible version of gai-1, a stable, dominant allele of a DELLA gene. This approach rendered a list of over 150 genes differentially expressed after induction of gai-1. The presence of several auxin-related genes among the primary targets of DELLA proteins has allowed us to establish a new role for GAs in the modulation of hypocotyl gravitropism through the repression of IAA19/MASSUGU2 expression by DELLAs. Moreover, the repression of HOOKLESS1 and the auxin efflux carriers PIN3 and PIN7 by DELLAs, is proposed as the molecular mechanism to explain the already known physiological regulation of apical hook development by GAs. / Gallego Bartolomé, J. The theoretical part of the thesis describes general characteristics of hook loaders and summarizes critical research aimed on similar designs used by competition. Practical part deals with own design which consists of repetitive steps: design, analytical check, software simulation- if necessary, stress analysis. The last part is dedicated to drawing documentation. Assembly drawing, sub-assembly drawings and few parts drawings were composed.
