Historical Deposition and Microbial Redox Cycling of Mercury in Lake Sediments from the Hudson Bay Lowlands, Ontario, Canada

The repercussions of climate change are felt worldwide, but Arctic and subarctic regions, where climate warming is expected to be amplified, are especially vulnerable. An episode of mass fish mortality in the Sutton River in the Hudson Bay Lowlands (HBL) of Northern Ontario has elicited the interest of the scientific community. Several lakes were sampled over three years in an effort to better understand and document the changes that may be occurring in these lakes. This study uses sediment cores to assess the history of mercury (Hg) deposition and to assess changes occurring in autochthonous productivity in these lakes. Sediments deposited after the onset of the industrial revolution contained significantly higher concentrations of Hg, with the highest concentrations found in the most recently deposited sediments. Hg concentrations in these pristine lakes rival those of lakes in heavily urbanized areas, indicating that they are in fact subjected to atmospheric deposition of Hg. There was a large variation in [Hg] of the surface sediments of 13 lakes; underscoring the importance of in situ processes in the fate of atmospherically deposited Hg. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations were not correlated with total mercury concentrations (THg), demonstrating how THg is a poor predictor of MeHg; the bioaccumulative neurotoxic form of mercury. The S2 fraction of Rock-Eval® Pyrolysis, C:N ratios and ∂13C signatures were used as proxies of autochthonous carbon and all indicated that the lakes have become increasingly productive, presumably due to warmer water temperatures and longer ice-free seasons. Additionally, I use molecular techniques to detect and quantify the merA gene in the sediment; a proxy of bacterial mercury resistance involved in redox transformations. In Aquatuk, Hawley and North Raft Lakes, I observed a subsurface increase in merA genes in the sediment core, independently of a control gene and the [THg]. While I have not been able to explain the driving variables of this subsurface increase, I believe that the role of merA within remote lake sediments deserves further work. Lastly, microcosms were used to measure the production of volatile elemental mercury (Hg(0)) from surface sediments of Aquatuk Lake. I used a combination of analytical and molecular techniques to show that the production of Hg(0) is biogenic and tested the effect of nutrients, pH and ionic strength on the Hg(0) production rates. Ionic strength alone had the greatest impact on Hg(0) production rates, with increased Hg(0) production as ionic strength increases.

Microfossil Evidence for Recent and Past Changes to Hudson Bay Oceanography

In 2005, box cores were collected throughout the Hudson Bay and Strait. A detailed micropaleontological data set has been generated from these cores for this study and is combined with geochemical and geochronological data to observe temporal and spatial oceanographic changes throughout the bay and strait. All of the cores show an increase in tintinnid species and agglutinated foraminifera, and coincident decreases in calcareous foraminifera in younger core sections. In general, these microfossil trends are correlated with higher organic matter content of the younger core sections. This results from a more extensive freshwater plume that causes lowered pH in the superficial sediments and conditions less favourable for the preservation of calcareous tests. Furthermore, with a 14C age constraint in one of the cores, the mid-Holocene depositional and paleoceanographic history is represented, and provides evidence of marine invasion by 7100 cal yrs BP.

The objectives of this study were to test for the feasibility of satellite radio-tracking of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) breeding in the Grande-Baleine hydro-electric study area, to assess the size of their home-ranges, to determine their food habits during the nesting season, and to describe migration routes and wintering grounds of these birds. / In June and August 1992, six golden eagles, of which 5 adults (4$ rm sp{o}$ + 1 sex unknown), were caught and fixed with transmitters in order to follow their movements over one year. / The golden eagles fed on various animal species, i.e. 8 mammals, 15 birds and one fish, during the breeding season, however Canada geese (Branta canadensis) were the main item in their diet. / Four of the adult eagles undertook their fall migration in October 1992. The other adult eagle died of an unknown cause while the fate of the nestling could not be determined. All the migratory birds moved south to the United States, but they used different migration routes. The four golden eagles reached their wintering grounds in November and December, 1992. / After a three to four month stay in the wintering area, three eagles undertook their spring migration in March 1993. When returning to the breeding area, two of the eagles followed the same migration routes used in fall, while the third one flew off course to the west into Ontario. The first two birds reached their former territories in March and April while the third eagle only arrived in mid-May 1993.

Using lignin biomarkers and 14C, of both river DOC and POC, and permafrost soils, to characterize the impacts of climate warming and permafrost degradation on the organic carbon budget of the Hudson Bay, Canada

This study looks at characterizing the terrigenous OC sources, like permafrost, of POC and DOC through 17 rivers and six soils of the Hudson Bay (HB) using lignin biomarkers, and Δ14C. Our findings show the dominance of the OC flux (89%) from the southwest Hudson Bay Rivers, especially from DOC (93%), shedding light on the sources and fate of OC in HB sediments. With warming, organic cryosols, with high OC content in the Cz horizon, have the potential to release as much as 1.5 gOC/m2 for every cm increase in active layer depth. The [Ad/Al] ratios, when combined with 14C ages of DOM, show that older SOC is being released in some rivers and is fresher than expected due to its preservation within permafrost. S/V and C/V ratios, are well correlated to latitude in DOM, reflecting the vegetation in their drainage basins and can be used to indicate OC sources.

Population Genetics of Hudson Bay Beluga Whales (Delphinapterus leucas): An Analysis of Population Structure and Gene Flow using Mitochondrial DNA Sequences and Multilocus DNA Fingerprinting / Population Genetics of Hudson Bay Beluga Whales

Beluga whales in Canadian waters are subdivided into at least six genetically distinct stocks maintained by geographic separation and philopatry to estuaries in summer. Belugas in eastern and western Hudson Bay have previously been shown to be compose genetically distinct populations using mitochondrial restriction analysis. It is not known whether these stocks are further subdivided on the basis of specific estuarine use. Mitochondrial DNA control region sequences were used to investigate variation among belugas sampled at several sites along eastern Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay. 320 bp were sequenced, including the highly variable 5' region of control region, in 126 belugas. 17 variable sites and 17 haplotypes, which clustered into 2 related groups, were detected among the whales sequenced. Haplotypes of group A were found mostly in eastern Hudson Bay sites, while B group haplotypes were predominant in northern populations. Significant differences in frequencies of haplotype groups were found between eastern Hudson Bay and Southern Hudson Strait/Ungava Bay populations, indicating they are genetically distinct populations. Haplotype distribution patterns also suggested possible differences between belugas using different estuaries along eastern Hudson Bay. The presence of both groups in each population indicated some exchange of individuals between populations, and/or between eastern and western Hudson Bay. Multilocus DNA fingerprinting was used to investigate the extent of gene flow between eastern and western Hudson Bay belugas via interbreeding on common wintering grounds in Hudson Strait. Belugas from St. Lawrence estuary and the Mackenzie Delta were also analyzed to measure their genetic relatedness to Hudson Bay whales as well as for purposes of comparison to earlier fingerprinting analyses. While results supported lower genetic diversity within the St. Lawrence population, the range of bandsharing within and between populations was otherwise low (0.09 -0.17 for Jeffreys 33.15 and 0.12-0.22 for Jeffreys 33.6). Mantel tests showed differences among St. Lawrence, Hudson Bay, and Mackenzie Delta populations, but not within Hudson Bay. The conflicting nature of the data did not allow conclusions regarding gene flow. Therefore, DNA fingerprinting was not considered to have provided sufficient resolution in addressing this issue. / Thesis / Master of Science (MS)
