A Thesis submitted to The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine. / BACKGROUND & SIGNIFICANCE Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital condition that involves hypoplasia or atresia of left heart structures. Treatment requires three separate interventions, and the “hybrid” procedure is a less invasive alternative to the initial open-heart operation. This approach has become favorable for certain patients in recent years, but there is a need to better understand the outcomes and the factors that influence the outcomes for hybrid Stage 1 palliation of HLHS.

Subdiffusion through Switching

archives@tulane.edu / An ongoing effort in the study of microparticle movement in biofluids is the proper characterization of subdiffusive processes i.e. processes whose mean-squared displacement scales as a sublinear power law. In order to describe phenomena that lead to subdiffusive behavior, a few models have been developed: fractional Brownian motion, the generalized Langevin equation, and random walks with dependent increments. We will present perhaps a simpler model that leads to subdiffusion and is designed to characterize systems where a regularly diffusive particle intermittently becomes trapped for long periods of time. By combining ideas from Hybrid Switching Diffusion and queuing systems literature we will describe the law of our process. The major obstacle is the introduction of heavy tail immobilization times and we will overcome it by representing the power law as an infinite mixture of exponentials. The description of the law allows us also to solve the First Passage Problem. Modeling subdiffusion is a very active field of research both in mathematics and physics. Physicists often use a continuous model that originates in the theory of random walks - Brownian motion inversely subordinated to an $\alpha$-stable process. In a similar way we will describe our process. With this description we will show that our process under rescaling is equivalent to the inverse subordinated Brownian motion, i.e., we will present the functional limit theorem for Switching Diffusion. / 1 / Lukasz Sikora

The pre survey questionnaire sought quantitative responses only. The post survey sought quantitative and qualitative responses. Sun, wind and water : A case study

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the feasibility of a water treatment plant at a given location, supplied partially or entirely with renewable energy. The system analysed is a PV/Wind hybrid system. Economic and technical conditions for the system are calculated. The power demand of the plant, determined by the water demand at the given location, will be met by renewable energy to a degree depending on local weather conditions and the technical products used. This will result in a yearly coverage ratio of renewable energy, which determines the power need from the distribution grid as well as the payback time of the system. A case study is made on an existing water treatment plant at Fårö. The result shows that the cover ratio, with power supply from sun and wind, would reach 62 %. However, the total energy produced by the hybrid system exceeds the demand. In order to use all the energy produced, the hybrid system would need energy storage and a possibility to sell excess energy to the power distribution grid. A sensitivity analysis of the hybrid system is made by changing ingoing parameters and components.

Switched Linear Systems: Observability and Observers

Switched linear systems have long been subject to high interest and intense research efforts, not only because many real world systems happen to exhibit switching behaviors, but also because the control of many complex systems is only possible via the combination of classical continuous control laws with supervisory switching logic. A particularly important problem is that of estimator and observer design, since the state of a system is usually only available through partial, often noise-corrupted, measurements. Even though hybrid estimation has been around for at least thirty years, a veil of mystery has surrounded the concept of ``observability' in switched linear systems. It is not until recently, with the recent renewal of interest toward deterministic hybrid systems, that observer design and observability analysis have fuelled sustained research efforts. It is in this context that this work is grounded. More precisely, the objective of this research is twofold: - To define proper concepts of observability in discrete-time switched linear systems, to characterize them, and to analyze their main properties, among which decidability is of special importance. - To propose and analyze observers - deadbeat and asymptotic - for such systems. The main contributions of this dissertation are as follows. It is shown that pathwise observability, i.e. state observability under arbitrary mode sequences, is decidable. Furthermore, the Kalman-Bertram sampling criterion is carried over to switched linear systems. Under unknown modes, mode and state observability are both characterized through simple linear algebraic tests, and are shown to be decidable in the autonomous case. As for asymptotic observers, a direct algebraic approach is proposed for the class of linear systems subjected to switching in the measurement equation.
