In this context, the continuous improvement of products and productive processes, which determines incremental and constant changes, is necessary to maintain the competitive company. The need of the organizations to emphasize the customers satisfaction makes the ISO 9001 (International Organization for Standardization) quality system to overview its approach, considering in its requirements this subject with the continuous improvement as well as management for processes. In spite of the norm demands a systemic and structured practice, the continuous improvement activities needs initiatives development, on behalf of the organizations, which goes further than programs and techniques, considering also cultural and behavioral aspects which allows the supported continuous improvement of products and processes. In conclusion, it can be pointed out that the norm ISO 9001:2000 relates only what to do and not how to proceed in order to ensure that the company really accomplishes the continuous improvement of its processes. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to analyses the practice of the continuous improvement, identifying the aspects that promote it, related to the individual culture and behavior as well as the organization as a whole. This work describes the results of an exploratory qualitative research accomplished in supplier companies of capital goods and automotive sectors, certified by the norm ISO 9001, analyzing how they promote its continuous improvement programs, considering the cultural development. Afterwards, considerations are accomplished through the examined companies to evaluate the differences identified among the sector organizations presented, concerning the practice of the continuous improvement and the cultural development which support it.

This research presents the quality management implementation process in a technology based company, approaching the planning and the more relevant actions in the context of those typical company features, specially the product development process, the performance measurement system, and continuous improvement systems. The action research methodology has been adopted as it is a participative method that enables to achieve the practical objectives, quality management implementation, and the knowledge objectives about the action development. The implementation process observation unveils the main difficulties and solutions founded in order to attend the company demands. As a contribution, the observation analysis in the context of the theoretical background enables to build a correlation between those company features and the quality management system implementation needs, in a way to consolidate a proposal for a specific conceptual perspective for quality management system for other similar companies. As a practical result, the quality management system implementation brought effective gains in productivity measured by the main company performance indicators.

No. of bitstreams: 1 DissAC.pdf: 1825602 bytes, checksum: 66578e867a58642d29d296cfb15d5fc3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-12-05 / The steady growth of the fruit juices sector is a significant factor strengthening the Brazilian economy; the richness of the tropical fruits, the quality of juices they are processed into and the luring presentation to consumers expanded the internal market and helped conquer demanding markets abroad. All this happened as a result of meeting stringent and assorted requirements, since food fruit juices included quality and safety are a must today. The purpose of this paper is to present a proposal to integrate management systems involving quality, good manufacturing practices and related legal requirements, as well as HACCP, in a small fruit juices company in the State of São Paulo. The proposal includes integrated cost-effective actions to implement the various standards. The research carried out concludes that the integration of management systems involving quality, good manufacturing practices and related legal requirements, as well as HACCP, is feasible. A relationship matrix of the respective requirements was designed during the research, which allowed conducting an initial joint and revealing assessment to evaluate the degree of fulfillment of those requirements. Bearing in mind the company´s scenario where the research was performed and the first application of this Integrated Management System took place, the proposal was not totally implemented. The necessity was perceived to test the Integrated Management System and monitor its operation in other food sector companies, thus not only evaluating the consistency of the proposal but also its flexibility to meet local specific requirements and detect improvement opportunities.

A Qualitative Study of Selected Quality Knowledge and Practices in Guangdong Province, China

Thomas, Tyler R. 17 March 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The manufacturing industry has become very competitive in today's global market environment. Many US companies are faced with the choice of keeping their manufacturing domestic or looking to low cost off-shore countries to take advantage of the labor costs differences. To gain an understanding of the state of manufacturing in China, a major focus in the manufacturing world today, this thesis was undertaken. This thesis presents the findings of research conducted in Guangdong Province, China in June - July, 2005. This research addressed customer focus, leadership and general manufacturing and quality knowledge and practices of small, medium and large sized companies in Guangdong Province, China. Customer focus and leadership are two of the eight fundamental principles of the ISO 9000:2000 family of standards. These two principles, customer focus and leadership, were selected for the foundational role they play in any organization. Companies that are customer focused and have good leadership principles and practices should tend to give quality a priority for the product/service they provide to their customers. The aim of this thesis was to determine if there is a significant difference in the way small, medium and large companies are aligned with these two fundamental principles. Data regarding customer focus, leadership, and general manufacturing and quality knowledge and practices was collected from 41 manufacturing companies in Guangdong Province, China through the use of a survey, interviews and observation. At the conclusion of this thesis, a summary of the findings regarding the aim of the thesis is presented along with a confirmation and questioning of previous research completed.
