Working in the Biz: Material and Identity Processes of BartendingUnknown Date (has links)
Bartending makes for an interesting case study in that it brings together research
on emotional labor and tipped front-line service jobs, as well as the contemporary
increase in precarity in work and precarity in life. This project explores the material and
identity processes of bartending, examining how a precarious job with high expectations
of emotional labor in-turn affects the occupational and personal identities of those
employed in the industry. Overall three overarching themes were identified: (1) When
wages are outsourced to customers via tipping systems workers are exposed to
particularly high emotional demands, rendering bartending a unique form of quid pro quo
emotional labor. (2) Bartenders exist in a “default career” mode of employment that is
stigmatized for being low-status low-skilled labor. (3) Performing emotional labor and
managing stigma creates a divergence between bartender’s personal and occupational
identities resulting in constant identity work on and off the job. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

The rhetoric of law and love: legally (re)defining marriageUnknown Date (has links)
In just over one year since United States v. Windsor— the case invalidating sections of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that defined marriage, for purposes of federal statutes, as the “union of man and woman”— more than a dozen states have had their same-sex marriage bans ruled unconstitutional. This suggests a shift in legal meaning; previously successful arguments against same-sex “marriage” now seem irrational as argumentative ground has shifted. Since favorable rulings redefine “marriage” to include same-sex unions, this thesis analyzes Kitchen v. Herbert, a 2014 legal opinion from the United States Court of Appeals Tenth Circuit, to understand the rhetorical processes underpinning its redefinitional act. That analysis draws on Kenneth Burke’s theories of entitling and constitutions and discusses the rhetorical concepts of terministic screens, casuistic screens, scope and circumference as key features of the rhetoric of the legal opinions. The findings call for a balancing of deconstructive and conventional approaches to legal discourse. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Women's experience of their sense of identity at work : a phenomenological studySterley, Beverley Anne 02 1900 (has links)
Although women increasingly contribute their labour to an ever-burgeoning
workplace, little is understood about their roles and sense of identity at work.
Adopting a phenomenological approach to this study will allow the researcher to
discover what women’s experience of their sense of identity at work encompasses.
Furthermore, a review of the contemporary literature, and a phenomenological
approach to the study employing semi-structured interviews and an
explication of the protocols using the ‘modified’ Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method
(Creswell, 1998), may be used to explore women’s experience of their sense of
identity in the workplace. Recommendations may be made for future research
and organisational practice.
The main findings indicated, inter alia, that the participants expressed their
sense of identity at work from a ‘collective’ or social identity orientation. This
finding also supports various feminist researchers’ viewpoints that women may
develop a unique sense of identity relative to the environment in which they find
themselves (Ely, 1994; Hakim, 1996). Themes that arose from the interviews
with the participants included the concerns women express universally to a
greater extent, yet included their interests, abilities, traits and material characteristics
to a lesser extent (Ashforth & Mael, 1989; Hogg & Turner, 1987). The
study findings also questioned psychology-based “person-centred” ideas about
women’s relationships with other women at work, and added credence to the
supposition that the demographic composition of an organisation may influence
an individual’s experiences at work (Ely, 1994, p. 203). Furthermore, as social
v
identities are more significant in organisations, due to the incidence of social
groups (Fisher, 1986; Mortimer & Simmons, 1978; Van Maanen, 1976), it would
appear that as fewer women are employed in management and the upper
echelons of organisations, they would therefore not benefit from being involved
in the social environment of work, and would therefore not be in a position to
adopt the identity of their counterparts (Becker & Carper, 1956). The contribution
of this research to understanding women’s experience of their sense of identity,
and the provision of a basic framework in this regard, may assist female employees,
and their employers and managers, in their relationships at work, and
in this way improve the employment prospects and retention of women. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Prepare, process, package: the consumption of Haiti in Hispanic Caribbean literatureUnknown Date (has links)
Since Alejo Carpentier's 1944 encounter with the "real maravilloso" in the ruins of the Citadelle La Ferriáere, Haiti has been linked with the notion of Latin American identity, in particular, and American identity, in general. Interesting to me are the ways and the means by which Haiti resurfaces in Cuban and Puerto Rican narratives and what allusions to Haiti in these texts imply about its relationship to the Hispanic Caribbean. I will combine the ideas of John Beverley, Sybille Fischer, and Mimi Sheller to discuss how representations of Haiti work to perpetuate its disavowal and render it a consumable product for the rest of the Caribbean as a whole, and for the Hispanic Caribbean specifically. I will focus on works by Cuban and Puerto Rican authors who have prepared, processed, and packaged Haiti in such a way that its culture, language, and even sexuality are able to satisfy long-held cravings for that which is local and exotic. Thus, I hope to explain how it has been and will continue to be possible for the Hispanic Caribbean to consume Haiti positively as a symbol of its marvelous reality and negatively as an Afro-Caribbean personification of racial, cultural, and political decadence in literature. / by Walteria C. Narcissism, perceptions of peer relationships, and target-specific aggression in middle childhoodUnknown Date (has links)
This study examined how narcissism affects preadolescent children's choices of peer targets for aggression. Based on the idea that narcissists have a grandiose sense of self that requires nourishment, we hypothesized that narcissistic children are especially likely to attack peers who threaten, or fail to nourish, their grandiose self. We assessed narcissism and the degree to which each child's aggression toward peers depended on (a) the child's perceived liking by each peer, (b) the child's liking of each peer, (c) each peer's actual liking of the child, and (d) the child's perceived similarity to each peer. Participants were 197 children in the fourth through eighth grades at a university school. Narcissism predicted the four types of target-specific aggression in disparate ways for boys and girls. Narcissistic boys were especially likely to direct aggression toward male peers whom (a) they perceived as disliking them, (b) they disliked, and (c) they perceived as dissimilar to themselves. Narcissistic girls were especially likely to attack female peers whom they perceived as similar to themselves. Narcissism may enhance different motives for boys and girls in same-sex peer relatinships. We propose that narcissism enhances investment in status and rivalry amoung girls while enhancing the motive to attack dissimilar peers among boys. / by Chelsie Anderson. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

Links between attachment profiles and adjustment outcomes in preadolescenceUnknown Date (has links)
The current study examined the possibility of using cluster analysis to classify attachment styles in middle childhood. Attachment classifications were measured by looking at child coping strategies and perceived maternal behavior. The attachment classification was then tested for construct validity by examining whether it can predict adjustment outcomes in interpretable patterns. The adjustment outcomes examined were a self-reported global self-worth scale and peer-reported internalizing and externalizing behaviors measured using a Peer Nomination Inventory. The current study had 199 third through eight graders and provided evidence for the cluster analysis approach and also showed that the disorganized attachment was associated with the most adverse adjustment outcomes. That is, results showed that disorganized attachment was linked with the lowest levels of global self-worth and the highest rates of internalizing and externalizing behaviors and was significantly different from the securely attached cluster on each measure. The implications and possible underlying causes are discussed. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015 / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Previous issue date: 2018-08-03 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Our focus is to investigate how the process of constitution, metamorphosis and identity
rearrangement is organized, from the perspective of liminality, a condition individuals
encounter on their paths in the quest for greater financial autonomy. We also strive to
understand the crisis inherent to their whereabouts while travelling between different living
spaces, in different countries. Our subjects are Italian-Brazilians who work in ice-cream
parlors in Germany. These are young people who have been encouraged to acquire an Italian
passport through the network in place between the cities of Urussanga (State of Santa
Catarina, Southern Brazil) and Longarone, Italy, which enables them to be recruited, trained
for jobs at these gelaterias, and then later sent to Germany. They develop relationships with
these different countries, since they continue to visit their hometowns, where they buy
property with the intent to come back permanently one day. We address issues related to the
relationships that are built with these countries: inclusion/exclusion, the creation of
subjectivities, forms of oppression and identity politics. In this thesis, we address how these
individuals deal with living life between places and how this changes their identities. The
methodology chosen for data collection was the life story narratives, which have been
analyzed based on the identity-metamorphosis-emancipation phrase proposed by Antônio da
Costa Ciampa, as well as multi-situated ethnographies and interviews. The past, the present,
as well as identity politics all become intertwined in the projects of these ice-cream parlor
workers creating a living space that lies between (no) places. These configurations arise due
to a constant lack of definition regarding their status, triggered by the socioeconomic,
historical and political relationship in which they were socialized and that they recreate,

Understanding collective action in repressive contexts : the role of perceived risk in shaping collective action intentionsAyanian, Arin H. January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the present research is to advance a general predictive model of the social psychological processes underlying collective action in contexts where collective action is met with significant repression by the authorities. The model integrates the recent advancements in the collective action literature and examines the unique predictive role of anger and fear (emotional pathway), political, identity consolidation and participative efficacies (instrumental pathway), politicised identification (identity pathway) as well as moral obligation, over and above past participation. Moreover, the research investigates how perceived risk, due to government sanctions, shapes these antecedents and the willingness to engage in collective action. Five survey studies (Studies 1 to 5) test this model in various repressive contexts (i.e., Egypt, Hong Kong, Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey). In addition, one experimental study (Study 6) examines the causal relation between perceived risk and (a) the antecedents of collective action and (b) the action intentions in a British sample. The results confirm the intensifying role of perceived risk, whereby it indirectly spurs further resistance through shaping the antecedents of collective action. The results also suggest that protesters are intrinsically motivated to engage in collective action when placed under risk. Specifically, although not motivated by political efficacy, protesters are strategic as they are motivated by the likelihood to consolidate the identity of their protest movement and the likelihood of their own participation to incrementally contribute to achieving the desired goals. Moreover, they are emotional, politicised and dutiful as their outrage towards how the authorities treat the protesters, their identification with their protest movement, as well as their sense of moral responsibility encourage them to take action despite the risks.

Search for identity: a study on Lin Yutang and Christianity / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Shen fen de xun suo: Lin Yutang yu Jidu jiao guan xi yan jiu.January 2013 (has links)
The identity problem of Chinese Christians has always been a hot issue in the studies of Chinese Christianity. Chinese Christians are generally caught at the horn of a dilemma as how to unify their Chinese identity and Christian identity, and how to handle the tensions between Chinese culture and Christianity. / Lin Yutang (1895-1976), one of the most influential modern Chinese writers, was renowned for his extensive writings in both Chinese and English. His best-sellers in English, including My Country and My People and The Importance of Living, earned him highest international fame among modern Chinese writers. A less-known but momentous facet of him is his special encounter with Christianity. Lin Yutang was born into a Christian family in a poor mountain village in Southern China, his father being a Presbyterian minister in a local church. He received secondary education at Talmage College, and tertiary education at St.John’s University, both of which were missionary schools. However, Lin renounced Christianity in his twenties and claimed to be a pagan for over thirty years until declaring his return to Christianity in his sixties. Lin’s journey of faith witnessed his lifelong search for the identity as a Chinese Christian, which was constantly undergoing transformation and construction. / In addition to the general introduction and conclusion, this thesis consists of six main chapters, each of which elaborates Lin’s relationship to Christianity during the different stages of his life, focusing on the ways in which he encountered and solved the identity problem of being a Chinese Christian. This thesis adopts E.H. Erikson’s theory on identity as an overall framework, while also referring to theories on cultural identity proposed by some scholars of cultural studies like Stuart Hall. This research makes extensive use of primary materials including Lin’s letters, manuscripts, and other relevant archives apart from his published works. / According to the findings of this research, Lin renounced Christianity in the midst of his identity crisis when he was compelled to choose between being a Chinese and being a Christian. He had described himself a “pagan for more than thirty years, but it doesn’t mean that he forsook his Christian faith. Lin’s particular use of “pagan necessitates careful interpretation and scrutiny. Lin should not be regarded as an anti-Christian writer in spite of his open criticisms of Christianity. It can be seen that Christianity had always been a major contributing factor in shaping Lin’s values and morality since his childhood. In fact, Lin Yutang had never ceased in his faith in God, even though he deliberately kept some distance from Christianity until he found his own way of worshipping God. When he returned to Christianity, he personally merged Christianity and Chinese culture, and established his Christian thoughts characterized with Chinese humanism, and hence reconstructed his identity as a unique Chinese Christian. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / "2013 nian 7 yue". / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 175-191). / Electronic reproduction. Previous issue date: 2017-05-12 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The focus of this research is the process of identity construction with an emancipatory sense based on the worldview and struggle for the territory of the indigenous people of Pataxó; The only ethnic group that could resist in the extreme-south of Bahia, inserted in a context of threats, persecutions and intense conflicts.
Considered extinct until the beginning of the 20th century, the presence of the Pataxó on the "Discovery Coast" was noted after the known "massacre of 51", marked by destruction, violence and fire in the village of Barra Velha, the "mother village" Of the ethnic group, located in the region of Monte Pascoal, the mountain sighted by the Portuguese when they arrived in Brazil.
The return of the survivors from the "mother village" massacre marks a period of intense political struggle and resistance, as well as the expansion of new villages around the Monte Pascoal National Park, the migration of some families to the sub-district of Coroa Vermelha, Administered by the municipality of Santa Cruz Cabrália.
A struggle that ends after 24 years with the resumption of an area of Atlantic forest in Coroa Vermelha threatened by the capitalist exploitation and that inaugurates a new phase patagó identity with the creation of the Reserve Pataxó of Jaqueira, in a project of rescue of the memory and culture pataxó And environmental preservation.
In order to meet the research objectives, we elaborated two analyzes: the first of the historical, geographic, economic, political and social aspects of the reality in which the Pataxó people are inserted, through developed academic researches and specialized literature on the process of colonization of South of Bahia in general, and of the Pataxó in particular, and in the narrative contributions of the Pataxó themselves; Located in the first part of the research indicated as Pataxó historical route. The second analysis, supported by research and academic bibliography, was empirically based on the process of recognition and territorialisation of the Reserva Pataxó da Jaqueira village, based on the proposal of the economic, cultural and environmental project of Ethnotourism and its implications for Construction of Pataxó ethnic identity with emancipatory meaning. Based on the theoretical proposal of the identity of
Antonio da Costa Ciampa and the theory of ethnicity as a form of social interaction of Fredrik Barth and in the struggle for recognition of Axel Honnet.
The empirical material was obtained through participant observation, the analysis of 22 semi-structured interviews, 3 interviews based on the life history narrative, and the collective meeting that involved the group of subjects of the research for the reflection and discussion of the results of the search.
Interviewees between young people and adults, male and female, aged between 18 and 60 years; From elementary to higher education; Of which only two subjects were not literate.
The research has shown that the struggle for recognition on both moral and social grounds constitutes the emancipatory processes that characterize the Political Identities of the indigenous Pataxó ethnic group as it claims for itself the juridical recognition of the original right to its territories in search of Better living conditions and the maintenance of their ethnic identity through the preservation of their customs and traditions.
The results of the research indicated that through the self-determination of the indigenous people of the Jaqueira Pataxó Reserve in rescuing the indigenous-Pataxó-traditional character, it was possible to mark ethnic identity in the reserve's Ethnotourism services, providing the direction of economic, environmental and Cultural, inspiring the other villages with a vocation for ethnotourism to follow in the same direction, and Jaqueira became a recognized reference of cultural strengthening and environmental preservation to all other Pataxó villages.
The indigenous-Pataxó-traditional character in his self-determination expresses the emancipatory sense of the group regarding the oppressions suffered by persecutions, physical and psychological tortures imputed by the surrounding non-indigenous society and the impossibility of living with their relatives and with their customs and tradition, In its own sacred territory.
