Transforming the tourist : Aboriginal tourism as investment in cultural transversality

Galliford, Mark January 2009 (has links)
The thesis is an examination of Aboriginal cultural tourism based on interviews with national and international tourists. The research found that the opportunity for tourists to share personal intimacy with Aboriginal people often outweighed the attraction to the cultural aspects of the tours and that this can contribute to the discourse of reconciliation.

Limnologia do rio Betari (Iporanga, SP) e a relação com o estado de conservação de sua bacia hidrográfica: subsídios para o desenvolvimento sustentável / Limnology of the Betari river (Iporanga-SP) and the relation with the conservation state of its hydrographic basin: subsidiaries for a sustainable development

Mário Donizeti Domingos 20 June 2002 (has links)
The Betari River basin, localized in one of the few areas still preserved in the São Paulo Sate, presents particular characteristics regarding its geology and geomorphology and the Atlantic Forest, still preserved. The increasing flow of tourists is also important, provoking a plan less occupation of the area. Part of the basin is occupied by the Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira - PETAR. With the objective of characterizing the Betari River and its hydrographic basin, relate the river\'s limnologic characteristics with the use and occupation of the land and determine the impact of tourism in the Serra borough, to obtain an environmental diagnostic of the basin and supply subsidiaries for its sustainable development, samples were collected in 4 seasons of the year, in 14 points throughout the river. In these points, sedimentation and hydraulic, physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the water were studied. Remote sensoring and geo-processing were also used to integrate information about the hydrographic basin and the body of water. Statistical analyses were then carried out to determine groups. A study of the economic and social-cultural impact was carried out in the Serra borough, the main human settlement in the basin. The results show an existence of spatial homogeneity in the physical and chemical parameters analyzed in the river. The geological characteristics of the basin seem to have a great influence in the hydrological parameters analyzed. The quality of the water is good, showing that the antropic action has not yet compromised the lotic system, despite the existence of heavy metals in sediment, a reflex of the rejects of mineral activities present in the area. The hydrographic basin did not present great changes in its vegetation in the last few years. The bentonic community presented temporal and special variation and, apparently, the hydraulic factors and the canal\'s characteristics were the main determiners of these variations. The economical and social-cultural impacts of tourism, positive or negative, were detected on the residing population. Apparently, the Serrana community passes through a euphoric period, thanks to the economical benefits brought by the tourist activity; however, the lack of planning can compromise the activity and these regional ecosystems, impeding, this way the sustainable development.

In this context, we propose to investigate the tourism, with its social and environmental issues, limited and restricted to Rio Quente municipality (GO) through a comparison between the years 1990 and 2014. In addition to the permissive factor for economic development, tourism aroused the interest of scientists and geographers due to environmental impacts, forcing public and private managers to take responsibility and different postures. Thus, this work presents reflections considering the important concepts of Geography in the tourism approach and analysis of the environmental impacts of this activity. To this end, different stages were developed: literature searches, field and / or laboratory. Thus, it appears, at first, one of Tourism Geography literature; in a second time a review of the history of tourism; In a third step in a dialogue with the various authors dealing with the social and environmental impacts; and on the fourth time, we present an analysis of the perception of the human population on the Rio Quente municipality in this regard. Considering the peculiarity of the region, the tourist concentration on his unique place in Sector Esplanada and its great distance from the center and other districts of the city, it was decided to define the sector Esplanada as the main focus of the study. Tourism in Rio Quente municipality (GO), as analyzed, showed an exponential growth after the 1990 The increase in the number of tourists caused, hence the increase in public revenue from tourist activities in Sector Esplanada. This growth showed, however, various environmental issues and the transformation of the local landscape, especially in the sector in question who were the pillars of this study. The results obtained allow us to understand how the tourism phenomenon has influenced the new forms of appropriation and use of space, its commercialization, the willingness of the local culture and landscape. Further, the work allowed the identification of positive and negative impacts generated by tourism activity and turn to issues such as jobs, recreation for the local population, quality of life, income, among others. Therefore, the dissertation discuss the issue of tourism in this municipality goiano through the various concepts and the reality experienced by the native local population, serving as a reference, including, for improved management or actions to balance the identified environmental impacts. To extract relevant information when searching and studying the environmental and tourism issues, this dissertation added information regarding the concepts of geography, specifically, the positive and negative impacts that permeate tourism in Rio Quente (GO). This reflection involves, above all, the local human population, enabling the participation of citizens in the construction of the study, which contributed to the consistent thread of scientific reasoning, aligning it with the theoretical framework presented. The research presented here can only be considered an initiative, a tool and even a warning to the public and private agencies in Rio Quente municipality (GO) and surrounding with regard to the perception that local people have the their environmental projects in Sector Esplanada, to show their satisfaction or dissatisfaction, when comparing the application of economic resources in the 1990-2014 period.

Contribution of Tourism to the Sustainable Development of the Local Community : Case Studies of Alanya and Dubrovnik

Beban, Ana, Ok, Huseyin January 2006 (has links)
The Mediterranean is the world’s number one tourist destination and the biggest tourism region in the world, which has been visited by 260 million tourists in 1990 and what is more, it is expected that this number will increase to 655 million by the year 2025. In the last 10 years Croatia and Turkey became two of the most popular Mediterranean destinations, and joined the trend of a growing number of European cities that are promoting the development of tourism in order to overcome the post-industrial crisis, or as in the case of Croatia, the post-war crisis. Consequently, today both countries see tourism as their economic future. However, to achieve continuous and sustainable development of tourism, three interrelated aspects should be taken into consideration: economic, social, and environmental. The main question that we tried to answer is in what ways tourism is contributing to the sustainable development of the local community - based on the case studies of Alanya in Turkey, and Dubrovnik in Croatia. Both communities have experienced rapid development of the tourism sector in the last 10 years, which still seems to rise continuously. As a result, various impacts have occurred. Some of them are positive and there is an obvious contribution to sustainable development, while some of the impacts have negative influence on sustainability. Alanya is characterized by the 3S or mass tourism, while Dubrovnik is a world heritage city, which is offering cultural tourism. Notably, mass tourism in Alanya and cultural tourism in Dubrovnik have different impacts on a place. Although Alanya has the opportunity to diversify their tourism, mass tourism is still the main tourism activity. Since mass tourism generally involves a large number of people visiting a small area, it can change an area dramatically. What is interesting about Dubrovnik is that its tourism has suffered a series of devastating events throughout history, such as a major earthquake in 1979 and war between 1991 and 1995, which has left the local tourist economy in tatters. However, cultural tourism in Dubrovnik has been proven as a more sustainable type of tourism than the mass tourism in Alanya, which can be mostly seen through the environmental impacts. In Dubrovnik, tourism is used to increase environmental awareness of the local population, and moreover, the city has recognized the financial values of cultural sites, which are used for the protection and preservation of the heritage. While Dubrovnik is putting a lot of effort to preserve its culture and heritage, Alanya’s main aim is to attract more tourists. For that reason, Alanya is much more sensitive than Dubrovnik concerning the possible threats to become an overdeveloped and overcrowded destination. The rich cultural and historical heritage make Dubrovnik a special and unique tourist destination, and therefore it is facing less risk than Alanya that it will be replaced by the other destinations in the near future. What is important for both communities is to be aware that positive consequences of tourism can arise only if, and when tourism is carried out and developed in a sustainable way. In order to achieve positive correlation between tourism and the local community, an involvement of the local population is essential. In Dubrovnik, the local population has been already involved in the implementation of the tourism, but the potential is still not completely used and there is much more to be done. On the other hand, the priority for Alanya perhaps should be a development of the alternative types of tourism with the special focus on the cultural tourism, which would enable Alanya to become a year-round tourist destination and provide more jobs for the local population, as well as greater income for the community. Moreover, earned money could be used for the protection of the environment and cultural heritage, and involvement of the local population in the planning process would arguably lead to more sustainable tourism. / Ana Beban +385 98 389 420 +385 1 3768 230 anabeban@yahoo.com Huseyin Ok huseyinok@gmail.com

Vliv světového dění na vývoj cestovního ruchu v České republice ve 21. století / The Global Events and Processes Impact on the Tourism Development in the Czech Republic in the 21st Century

Janečková, Martina January 2009 (has links)
The thesis analyses the essential determinants of the global importance which are currently causing the turbulent changes in the immediate and wider context of leisure and travel. The tourism industry is an important part of the national economy and the lifestyle. The global factors and their impact on the field of tourism were identified through the academic resources and a survey realized in Autumn and Winter 2009/10. A questionnaire was used for data collecting and a sample of 104 respondents was created. The following determinants were described: the level of political stability in tourism destination including the risk of terrorist attacks and other violence risks, the global financial crisis, the natural disasters and the occurrence of infectious diseases. The development of tourism is also affected by the world-wide globalization, the changing climate, the ageing of population, the greater mobility and the mass leisure including the process of changing values. The results of the empirical survey confirmed the validity of the given hypothesis. Finally the recommendations for the tourism businesses resulting from the analysis were introduced.
