The first cries compounds possessed simple harmonies, making the soloists of the time to interpret differently from today. The different treatments harmonics, which have arisen over time, seem to have been one of the leaders of these different interpretations, which have been shown in an intense and characteristic improvisation. Apparently, there was an increase in these transformations of choro with the rapid development of technology and media from the mid-twentieth century. This circumstance, perhaps, brought a more intense and immediate contact of this musical genre with global genres such as jazz, for example, as a new and intense focus on improvisation, which has drawn attention to formal structures and performing hybrid performances. The intensification of cultivation of Jazz in the country and later the emergence of Bossa Nova in the mid-twentieth century, it seems, interfered markedly in the improvisation of gender, providing new composers to invest in new procedures related to this harmonic American genre. Given this circumstance, this study aimed to investigate the technical and cultural implications resulting from the interference of different harmonics in procedures related to the processes of improvisation and musical genre choro in this context not only seek melodic and harmonic innovations, but also processes of identity implicated in processes of cultural hybridization.

Choro turned into a musical genre on the first decades of the 20th century, until the Radio Era (here understood as the 1930-45 period), based on an instrumental formation called conjunto regional . Among many groups, there was the Regional de Benedito Lacerda (Lacerda´s Group), which had as its integrants, Pixinguinha and Dino Sete Cordas, the focus of this work. Through the transcription and analysis of the recordings played by Lacerda´s Group in the album entitled Benedicto Lacerda e Pixinguinha (released in 1966 with recordings made between 1946-1951) it was possible to verify the melodic lines and performance style of Pixinguinha´s saxophone and his influence on the seven-string-guitar player Dino Sete Cordas in the album entitled Choros Imortais (1964), recorded by Altamiro Carrilho with Regional do Canhoto (Canhoto´s Group). Pixinguinha s performance on the recordings was based on pre-established improvisations possibly due to recording limitations. Dino Sete Cordas was very close to Pixinguinha and also had him as a model. Because of this contact, among other factors, Dino Sete Cordas came up with a characteristic interpretation style, and individual performance concept and a performance school which influenced countless musicians and contributed for a systematization of seven-strings-guitar´s study / O choro consiste em um movimento de expressão musical da cultura popular carioca nascido ao final do século XIX, constituindo-se a partir de um processo gradativo de abrasileiramento de gêneros europeus executados de uma forma sincopada, destinados à prática da dança.

Available literature on instrumental popular music focuses on North American jazz, however there is much to be explored and released concerning the material produced and published in Brazil about MPBI, particularly on double bass. Authors such as Piedade (2005) and Cirino (2009) discuss the scarce available literature and ponder on improvisation in overall Brazilian music. These authors' ideas are references to this work, which deepens their proposed discussion of improvisation and spreads it to double bass improvisation, mostly in interpretation of Brazilian genres. This paper's main goal is to discuss the use of rythmic cells and idiomatic melodies in improvisation for Brazilian genres baião, choro and samba. The work's methodology is made up of three main steps: 1) literary review in Portuguese and English; 2) selection and discussion of elements through hearing of audiovisual recordings, 3) applying selected elements to improvisation on popular themes’s excerpts. The work will also bring appendixes with full sheets for the defense recital and audio samples for the suggested improvisations. The research's final results (final product for concluding the Master's Degree in Music course) are presented in two parts: the defense recital (including themes with MPBI improvisation), which presents the research-originated artistic product, and the scientific article’s defense, which records the process of research itself.

A guitarra elétrica na música experimental: composição, improvisação e novas tecnologias / The electric guitar on experimental music: composition, improvisation and new technologies

André Lopes Martins 02 September 2015 (has links)
This work intends to, first, study the electric guitar as composition and improvisation interface through the use of new technology in experimental music; in a second moment, proposes a composition using some technological devices attached to the electric guitar. These tools were chosen after an extensive mapping individual trial and through its sound processing capabilities when addressed with the instrument. The compositional material was subsequently constructed from observations and author\'s reflections on the use of the instrument as an interface in dialogue with the new technologies available in mobile computing. The work also brings an auto-ethnography record of the research period of a few digital tools selected when in use with the electric guitar and the writing process and recording of the piece proposed, and its subsequent analysis. In its conclusion, therefore presents the observations and reflections from this interaction of the instrument and its new forms of instrumentness when attached to the computer.

The Evolution of orchestral formats of french jazz (1945-2010) : the new faces of big contemporary orchestras

Meyzie-Rozier, Chloé 01 December 2015 (has links)
Taking big jazz orchestras as my study subject, this thesis looks not only at the apprehension of the wide instrumental configurations in French jazz (1945-2010) but also the analysis of the approach adopted by French musicians as regards the big band, a formation basically frozen in tradition. After having established the principal models of the American big bands and seen their evolution, the aesthetic paths made by the French musicians after the Liberation have been put in evidence. Whilst certain orchestras chose to express themselves in a formation considered sacred during the Swing era (Claude Bolling, Jean-Claude Naude or Jacques Denjean), other groups, one by one, distanced themselves from the American models (Christian Chevallier). Finally, the attitude of certain musicians clearly adopted a break from the basic instrumental format (Jef Gilson or André Hodeir). The musicological analysis has therefore wished to evaluate on the one hand the musical movement based on copying the grand masters, and, on the other hand, the procedures which allowed to break through the imitation process to create a more personal path. Placed at the heart of the thought was the concept of soloists and arrangements, as well as the filiation dialectic – invention, the study made the point on the transfiguration of the sound which had been considered the norm up until then. Seen as outdated in the 1970s, the big orchestras made a wonderful comeback in France at the beginning of the 1980s. Nevertheless, this 're-birth' seems to have been accompanied by the appearance of somewhat smaller 'big orchestras'. With historic evidence of this phenomenon, the work has involved research into the causes which led to the creation of these formats. Socio- economic aspects have been questioned in this context, as well as the politics of helping creativity, the mastery of the notion of a project and the technological progress as well as aesthetic choices. Finally, when notions of individuality and freedom seem to be the root of the birth of these new orchestral formations, the strategies developed by the musicians have been analysed to reconcile an approach which better takes into account the creative individualities whilst not denying the collective aspect of playing jazz in a big orchestra. Digging into the repertories of today's groups, (Circum Orchestra, Diagonal, Pink Machine, MegaOctet, Radiation 10, le Sens de la Marche, Tous Dehors or X’tet) the study has consisted of revealing the dynamic processes governing the activity of today's big French jazz orchestras.

Mourey, Damien 30 October 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Grondin, Anne-Marie January 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Computational modeling of improvisation in Turkish folk music using Variable-Length Markov Models

Senturk, Sertan 31 August 2011 (has links)
The thesis describes a new database of uzun havas, a non-metered structured improvisation form in Turkish folk music, and a system, which uses Variable-Length Markov Models (VLMMs) to predict the melody in the uzun hava form. The database consists of 77 songs, encompassing 10849 notes, and it is used to train multiple viewpoints, where each event in a musical sequence are represented by parallel descriptors such as Durations and Notes. The thesis also introduces pitch-related viewpoints that are specifically aimed to model the unique melodic properties of makam music. The predictability of the system is quantitatively evaluated by an entropy based scheme. In the experiments, the results from the pitch-related viewpoints mapping 12-tone-scale of Western classical theory and 17 tone-scale of Turkish folk music are compared. It is shown that VLMMs are highly predictive in the note progressions of the transcriptions of uzun havas. This suggests that VLMMs may be applied to makam-based and non-metered musical forms, in addition to Western musical styles. To the best of knowledge, the work presents the first symbolic, machine-readable database and the first application of computational modeling in Turkish folk music.
