Improved lumped parameter thermal modelling of synchronous generators

Mejuto, Carlos January 2010 (has links)
Within the existing available mix of numerical and analytical thermal analysis options, lumped parameter thermal modelling is selected as the operational backbone to develop an improved novel synchronous generator thermal modelling package. The objective is for the creation of a user friendly quick feedback tool, which can serve as a means to make quick machine design thermal calculations and answer customer queries quickly and reliably. Furthermore, thermally improved generator designs will allow for inevitable operational losses to be channelled away from the machine more efficiently. As a result, machine component temperatures will be reduced, allowing lower generator thermal ratings. The end result will be smaller, longer lasting, more efficient generators, with the ability to be adapted with greater ease to particular applications. With the contribution of selected numerical analysis techniques, mainly finite element analysis for the distribution of iron losses, the MySolver thermal modelling package is developed and presented in this thesis. It is this combination of numerical and analytical tools that improves synchronous generator thermal modelling accuracy, but ultimately it is the lumped parameter nature of the thermal models developed that makes MySolver succeed as a reliable quick feedback electrical machine thermal design tool, validated using experimental results for a wide range of operating conditions. The initial part of the thesis analyses the electrical machine thermal modelling techniques available today, indicating advantages and disadvantages associated with each one, and providing a rationale for the selection of lumped parameter modelling to be used by MySolver. The development of the synchronous generator lumped parameter thermal models is detailed, with examples on its construction presented. Subsequently, finite element analysis is utilised to predict the distribution of machine iron losses across the rotor and stator laminations, with the findings applied to MySolver. Furthermore, a study is performed into the lumped parameter discretisation level needed to effectively represent machine windings. MySolver is experimentally verified using experimental data from a fully instrumented synchronous generator and this data is also used to obtain further insight into the temperature distribution within the generator. In the final part results are evaluated and the use of MySolver for modelling and optimising electrical machines is discussed. Finally, appropriate conclusions on the work presented are drawn.

NPSAT1 Missile System Prelaunch Safety Package (MSPSP)

Prater, Gary L. 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / NPSAT1 will be launched as a secondary payload on the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) Atlas V. The Atlas V will provide a medium lift capability in the EELV class of launch vehicles. NPSAT1 will be mated to the Atlas V using the EELV Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA). The design and operations of NPSAT1 will require that the space vehicle pose no hazards to ground support equipment, personnel, the launch vehicle, or other payloads. Potential hazards include structural failure, inadvertent deployment of antennas or other mechanisms, inadvertent radio frequency emissions, and other hazards. The scope of this thesis is to assess the safety risks associated with NPSAT1 for all activities occurring at the launch site through orbit insertion. This includes ground testing at the integration site, as well as in-flight operations prior to and shortly after separation from the launch vehicle. All hazards associated with NPSAT1 are to be enumerated and assessed for criticality. Hazard mitigation is to be presented preferably through subsystem design, but may also be performed through operations. / Captain, United States Army

Management Control Systems as a Package and the Impact on Organizational Ambidexterity : A Case Study of a R&D Organization in a Swedish Medical Technology Company

Bogered, Gustaf, Rundquist, Christian January 2016 (has links)
Background: The idea of MCSs operating together in a package is not a new concept. However, not many empirical studies have been made where MCSs have been studied as a package despite studies showing the importance in doing so. The assessment of the performance implications of MCSPs has traditionally been limited to financial measures. Theory suggests that the performance of a MCSP ought to be assessed on a broader scale than conventional output measures. Organizational ambidexterity has been positively associated with a broad variety of performance measures and thus it is used as an assessment tool in this study in response to the need for performance measurement on a broader scale than financial output. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe the MCSP in two different phases in the case organization and assess how the MCSP in these two phases promotes the organization’s ability to achieve organizational ambidexterity. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative research strategy and is limited to a single case study in a R&D organization within a Swedish medical technology company. Semistructured qualitative interviews have been used to collect empirical data. Conclusion: The MCSP in the two phases is composed of different MCSs that were found to be used differently. Within the MCSP in both phases, several linkages were revealed between control elements and that some MCSs function to achieve the purposes of other MCSs. This study further concludes that the MCSP of the current phase was found to promote organizational ambidexterity better than the MCSP in the previous phase due to it promoting a better balance between exploitation and exploration.

Uppfattningen av den grafiska designen på teförpackningar : Enkätundersökning och visuell innehållsanalys / The perception of the graphic design of tea packages : Survey and visual content analysis

Andrén, Sandra, Man, Nicole January 2016 (has links)
The companies of today all compete to sell the same products and it’s important to stand out. There’s a great variety of packaging in the stores and that’s why graphic design play an important role. This study examines the graphic design of the tea packaging and if graphic design on tea packages has an impact on how consumers perceive the product. This study is only focused on tea packages containing tea bags and not loose tea. The focus is on graphic design on the front of the tea package and not the shape of the tea package. The study was implemented with a survey and a visual content analysis. The study aims to find out what it is in the tea packaging graphic design that contributes to how the consumer perceives the product. The results of the survey showed that the brand had a big impact on how consumers perceived the product and its design.

The Effect of Variability in Substance Abuse and Dependence Terminology on Physicians' Prescribing Decisions

Phipps, Lisa Rochelle Burroughs 01 January 2006 (has links)
Prescription drug abuse is a continuing problem in the United States. Educating physicians on issues related to prescription drug abuse is a key factor in preventing and treating this problem. High variability has been found in substance abuse terminology in the literature, textbooks, and FDA-approved product labeling. This dissertation describes a survey study designed to address how the variability in substance abuse terminology, specifically package inserts, affects the prescribing decisions made by physicians.A random sample of 1008 physicians currently licensed and residing in the Commonwealth of Virginia received a letter of explanation, a self-administered questionnaire, and a follow-up reminder and thank you. To increase response rate, a second questionnaire was sent to non-responders. Prescribing decisions made by physicians were measured as three variables: comfort level with a prior physician's choice, likelihood of refilling the prescription, and likelihood of prescribing a drug or drug class as the first physician seeing a particular patient. Physicians were presented with four case scenarios which included package insert information and selected patient characteristics. Other factors affecting physicians' decisions in prescribing controlled substances include ideas about addiction, and characteristics of the physician, patient, disease state, and drug. The patient case scenarios and other items on the questionnaire addressed these covariates. Based on the number of deliverable questionnaires returned and included in analysis, the response rate was 32.3%. More physicians associated abuse, craving, drug-seeking behavior, psychological dependence, and withdrawal with addiction than with drug dependence, while more physicians felt that physical dependence and tolerance were necessary for drug dependence. The most frequently used sources for drug information were the Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR), package inserts, and pharmacists. Four linear regression models were created for physician prescribing decisions. Physician, patient and package insert characteristics were all significant (p

Étude de l'influence de l'assemblage sur le comportement des composants électromécaniques intégrés dans des systèmes radiofréquences / Study of the assembly influence on the behaviour of integrated electromechanical components in radiofrequency systems

Georgel, Vincent 13 June 2008 (has links)
In the objective to extend the variety of the integrated components inside a System in Packahe (SiP), it is necessary to develop the integration of heterogeneous component. This study presents a flip-chip solution with an adhesive bonding. The use of such materials involves some problems of thermo-mechanical reliability. With virtual prototyping, it is possible to evaluate the strains and to understand the behaviour of the structure. These allow us to know the origin of the failure and to optimize its design before the fabrication. The feasability of the technique is demonstrated with a surface acoustic waves filter (SAW). We study three different types of polymer (BCB, SU-8 and TMMF) for the sealing and for the protection of the active area of the filter. Different tests : mechanical, electrical and reliability validate our solution. We have made a complete SiP composed by a silicon tuner and a SAW filter inside a single package for a television on mobile application

Implementace Třetího energetického balíčku do právního řádu České republiky / Implementation of the Third energy package into the legal order of the Czech Republic

Jančuška, Michal January 2012 (has links)
Implementation of the Third energy package into the legal order of the Czech Republic Summary This thesis discusses the implementation issue of the Third energy package, also known as the Third liberalization package, into the Czech national law. It consists of three regulations and two directives of the European Union, which determines the energy politics both on the European level and on the level of the member states. The first part of this thesis describes the ancestors of the Third energy package and their accomplishments or failures together with reasons for creating the next generations of liberalizing legislation. The author describes the liberalization in the form of the legal, functional and accounting unbundling separately for electricity and gas industry at the European level, and then the implementation at the level of the Czech legislation. In the next chapter it is further explained, what were the European legislator's incentives for creating the Third energy package, and what new institutes it stipulates. It is herein described that the European Union came with three different unbundling versions of the transmission system operators (TSO) - Ownership unbundling (OU), Independent system operator (ISO) and the Independent transmission operator (ITO). Requirements of all of the three variations...

Stephenson enterprises: a business plan

Stephenson, Edward January 1900 (has links)
Master of Agribusiness / Department of Agricultural Economics / Michael W. Woolverton / A business plan serves two main functions: One is to provide a set of guidelines and expectations for running the business and the other would be to request funding from either a traditional or non-traditional lending source. Most business plans consist of the executive summary, business description, market analyses, management team, operations, and financial projections. Stephenson Enterprises is in the process of obtaining funding for a start-up business that will manufacture a biodegradable low cost substitute loose-fill packaging material. Due to the relatively high cost of this start-up, external funding is necessary. The first choice is to approach a large bank with the business plan, secondary choices if necessary would include smaller banks. The third choice would be alternative funding such as nonprofit organizations that provide start-up funding, however many of these are limited in the amount they lend. In order to garner funding for this entrepreneurship, it was decided that a business plan was needed. A business plan has two primary functions. One function is to set forth some guidelines as to how a firm is operated as well as what is projected. The second, and perhaps most often the reason a business plan is developed is to secure funding from a financial institution. Within the business plan a myriad of financial data was gathered to include: financial analysis, financial projections, cash flow, balance sheet, break-even analysis, sales proforma, income statements and sensitivity analyses. In addition to the financial data, a market analysis was conducted to provide insight into the local market. This business plan will not only provide an estimate of financials but will also serve as a guide book for operating the business.
