This dissertation describes the participatory development process which was facilitated among the parents of children attending Themeli Nursery and Pre-school in the community of Ramaphosa, an informal settlement near Reiger Park, Boksburg (Gauteng-South Africa).
The focus of this study was empowerment of men and women alike. Environmental Education is a foundation in strengthening learners and community awareness in all environmental issues, including water pollution-related diseases.
This study aimed at investigating the level of environmental education awareness on water pollution-related diseases by learners who live in the informal settlement. And lastly, if possible and feasible, to propose solutions to the perceived water pollution-related diseases found in this informal settlement adjacent to the Jukskei river in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg.
The research focused on the introduction of the dissertation in Chapter 1 Theoretical foundations of the research in Chapter 2 Research methodology in Chapter 3 Data analysis, interpretation and discussion in Chapter 4 Conclusions and recommendations in Chapter 5 The study provided various definitions of environment, Environmental Education, The goal, Aims & Objective, Classification & Outcomes, Environmental literacy; water pollution-related diseases, the integration of Environmental education in the RNCS & water pollution-related diseases awareness; Education for Sustainable
Development; and the relationship between the development of informal settlement and water pollution related diseases.
The outcomes of the investigation indicated that the level of environmental education awareness on water pollution –related diseases by learners at the informal settlement is less at primary level and partially increases at the high schools. An investigation into the contribution of housing developments to wetland degradation within the city of Harare, ZimbabweMutisi, Luke 03 July 2015 (has links)
Wetlands are fragile ecosystems that deliver a wide range of environmental and ecosystem services that contribute to human well-being. This fragility has seen a number of wetlands succumb to degradations and loss arising from different causes. The positive contribution of wetlands to various ecosystems and the increasing rate of their degradation and loss has been a cause for concern to different stakeholders for a long time. One of the landmark indications of this concern is the constitution of the Ramsar Convention that was held in Iran in 1971 with the objective of addressing concerns regarding to wetland degradation and loss. Among the competing land uses resulting in wetlands loss and degradation could be listed urban agriculture, industrial development and housing.
The research sought to assess the extent of wetland degradation with respect to housing
developments in Harare, Zimbabwe. The dilemma as to why and how wetlands were being degraded was an issue of concern. The research sought to determine whether abatement or mitigation measures were in place to address the challenges Associated with wetlands loss and degradation. The subsequent growth of developments, their associated activities and possible intervention measures had to be thoroughly assessed.
The administration of questionnaires and conducting of interviews was done to solicit data from the respondents. Collected data was analyzed through the Statistical Package for Social Scientists. Further to this, Google satellite imagery was used in the mapping of the Belvedere North and Epworth suburbs. Disturbed and undisturbed portions of the wetlands were analyzed by Geographical Information System software. Direct observation of the wetland area was used to examine existing natural features. To determine extent of pollution, water samples were collected in the wetlands and submitted to the laboratory for analysis. Analysis of selected chemical and physical parameters was carried out in the laboratory using selected methods.
The research made two important and broad findings. First, both the Belvedere North and Epworth wetlands have been severely degraded by anthropogenic activities with housing developments and urban agriculture as the major contributors of this degradation. The development of residential properties in the wetlands is a result of a high demand for residential space in Harare. Whereas housing developments in Belvedere are formal and planned, developments in Epworth were informal and haphazard. With no formal planning, the Epworth wetlands have been severely impacted by water and sand extraction as well as contamination of underground water by pit-latrines that are common in these informal settlements. Second, the research also found that wetland degradation was closely associated with the lack of clear
wetland policies both at national and local levels. The laboratory results showed that the water in Epworth was more polluted than the water in Belvedere. The measure of pollutants in Epworth was higher due to the activities being carried out as compared to Belvedere. Measures of Dissolved Oxygen, Total Dissolved Substances and conductivity increased from October to March in Epworth. Of note is the measure of Dissolved Oxygen that increased between October and March with a mean of 7.9 and 2.5 respectively. Total nitrogen and total phosphate also increased significantly in midstream and downstream sections. In essence, averages of 0.01 in October and 0.04 in March were recorded respectively for total nitrogen. The study concludes that an integrated land use approach has the potential of minimizing wetland loss and
degradation. This is possible through the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive policy involving all relevant stakeholders. This will ensure a coherent decision making process. In as much as integrated land use planning and policy formulation are potential approaches to wetland sustainability, the drive to implement policy by policy makers concerning wetlands has to be explored. As ignorance concerning the ecological importance of wetlands exists in some cases, it is critical to consider wetland benefits above other competing developments such as housing and urban agriculture. This can be achieved through merging interrelated disciplines with the idea of integrating wetland information. For instance, deriving engineering solutions
could promote development yet preserving wetlands. It is also suggested that environmental impact assessments, as planning tools should be carried out simultaneously with the town planning aspect. A comparative study of models of theological training for pastors and evangelists in Kibera informal settlementWanzala, Patience Santa 07 1900 (has links)
Nairobi is one of the fastest growing cities in Africa with an average of five hundred people coming to the city on a daily basis. More than seventy percent of these people end up living in the informal settlements. An appropriate model of theological training for church leaders needs to be developed, so as to equip them to work with congregations and communities within the informal settlements, to address the needs and potential of people living in the context of Kibera informal settlements and to bring about spiritual and material transformation in their midst. A qualitative and comparative study was undertaken and data was collected through semistructured interviews and focus group discussions. After interpreting the data, the researcher found out: The problems and needs of the community and challenges of church ministers in the informal settlements are enormous. It includes unemployment, poor housing and
sanitation, and a general lack of resources to meet basic needs; as well as negative ethnicity, inadequate ministers‟ stipends and the dependence of church members on ministers.
The existing models of theological education have not effectively equipped church ministers to face these challenges in informal settlement ministry. The research study end by proposing a model that will enable church ministers‟ witness to the incarnation of Christ among marginalized people in the informal settlement of Kibera. This model of theological training will be informed by African, Freirian and Western approaches to education. Intergovernmental relations : delivery of potable water to poor communities in Diepsloot of Gauteng ProvincePietersen, Johnny Masego January 2017 (has links)
In 1994, South Africa adopted intergovernmental relations (IGR) to facilitate service delivery. Sections 40-41 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, link service delivery with normative aspects of IGR, which include cooperation, transparency, accountability, mutual support, and coherence. A coherent implementation of IGR was subsequently emphasised by the Intergovernmental Relations Framework Act 13 of 2005. However, South Africa continues to experience service delivery challenges, especially in marginalised and poor communities in the current and former informal settlements. The selected Diepsloot was established as an informal settlement in 1995 and has been under an in situ upgrade programme.
The study’s focus was on the provision of potable water in the City of Johannesburg with specific reference to Diepsloot. A case study approach was used to assess lived experiences among the actors within the intergovernmental context of cooperative government. A qualitative methodology was utilised to source data about intergovernmental interactions among actors from the public institutions by means of semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. Lastly, a focus group was utilised for members of the ward committees in Diepsloot.
The study concluded that IGR system is not used adequately to support Diepsloot to access potable water in accordance with an established standard. In essence, the IGR system lacks an integrated approach to reverse a legacy of informality. To facilitate an IGR improvement, the study’s recommendations were three-fold: (i) provision of integrated support to the City of Johannesburg for Diepsloot despite erroneous assumption that metropolitan municipalities are self-sufficient, (ii) standardisation of potable water provision in Diepsloot by means of integrating IGR institutional responses, and (iii) institutionalisation of IGR engagements with other cities. To this end, the study proposed a model of integrated intergovernmental support to improve potable water provision and, by extension, other related services in Diepsloot. / Public Administration / D.P.L. Experiences of practitioners in early childhood development centres in impoverished and marginalised predominantly white communitiesKnafo, Tilana 12 1900 (has links)
Poverty is a global concern and the implementation of a quality early childhood
development (ECD) programme is one of the most powerful ways of breaking the
poverty cycle. Although research has been done regarding ECD centres in
impoverished, marginalised and predominantly black communities (informal
settlements), there is little, if any, similar research regarding predominantly white
settlements. The purpose of this narrative study is to explore and understand the
experiences of ECD practitioners regarding their work in impoverished and
marginalised predominantly white communities.
I, therefore, conducted this study from a social constructivist paradigm. The
participants constructed their realities based on their lived experiences and interaction
with others. The experiences of the participants were also influenced by their entire
ecological system – their everyday experiences in their work and lives, as well as more
distal influences for example South-Africa’s socio-political dispensation and cultural
influences. Consequently the study was framed within the Ecological Systems Theory
of Bronfenbrenner.
I collected data through narrative interviews with two participants (ECD practitioners),
and through field notes from observations, documents, photographs and artefacts.
From the coded data, four main themes emerged – social and personal experiences,
experiences concerning place, experiences with camp leadership and experiences
concerning support infrastructure. These themes will be useful to determine the kind
of support that practitioners need to ensure the quality of ECD programmes to support
the optimal development of the children. / Armoede is ʼn globale probleem en kwaliteit kleinkinderontwikkelingsprogramme
(KKO-programme) is een van die kragtigste maniere om die armoede-siklus te
verbreek. Alhoewel daar navorsing omtrent KKO-sentra in verarmde en
gemarginaliseerde oorwegend swart gemeenskappe (informele nedersettings)
gedoen is bestaan daar min, indien enige, soortgelyke navorsing in oorwegend blanke
nedersettings. Die doel van hierdie narratiewe studie is om die ervarings van KKOpraktisyns
in hulle werk in verarmde en gemarginaliseerde oorwegend blanke
nedersettings te ondersoek en te verstaan.
Daarom het ek hierdie studie vanuit ‘n sosiaal-konstruktivistiese paradigma uitgevoer.
Die deelnemers het hulle realiteite geskep gebaseer op hulle geleefde ervarings en
interaksies met ander. Die ervarings van die deelnemers is ook beïnvloed deur hulle
hele ekostelsel – hulle daaglikse ervarings in hulle werk en lewens, asook verwyderde
stelsels van invloed soos Suid-Afrika se sosio-politieke bedeling en kulturele invloede.
Gevolglik is hierdie studie geformuleer binne die Ekologiese Sisteemteorie van
Bronfenbrenner as raamwerk.
Ek het data versamel deur narratiewe onderhoude te voer met twee deelnemers
(KKO-praktisyns), en deur veldnotas van waarnemings, dokumente, foto’s en
artefakte. Uit die gekodeerde data het vier hooftemas navore gekom – sosiale en
persoonlike ervarings, ervarings met betrekking tot plek, ervarings met kampleierskap
en ervarings rakende ondersteuningsinfrastruktuur. Hierdie temas sal bruikbaar wees
om die soort ondersteuning te bepaal wat praktisyns benodig om ʼn kwaliteit KKOprogram
te verseker om sodoende die optimale ontwikkeling van die kinders te
