Identifying the information needs and sources of software practitioners. : A mixed method approach.

Josyula, Jitendra Rama Aswadh, Panamgipalli, Soma Sekhara Sarat Chandra January 2016 (has links)
Context. Every day software practitioners need information for resolving a number of questions. This information need should be identified and addressed in order to successfully develop and deliver a software system. One of the ways to address these information needs is to make use of some information sources like blogs, websites, documentation etc. Identifying the needs and sources of software practitioners can improve and benefit the practitioners as well as the software development process. But the information needs and sources of software practitioners are partially studied and rather it is mostly focused on the knowledge management in software engineering. So, the current context of this study is to identify the information needs and information sources of software practitioners and also to investigate the practitioner’s perception on different information sources.            Objectives. In this study we primarily investigated some of the information needs of software practitioners and the information sources that they use to fulfill their needs. Secondly we investigated the practitioner’s perception on available information sources by identifying the aspects that they consider while using different information sources.  Methods. To achieve the research objectives this study conducted an empirical investigation by performing a survey, with two data collection techniques. A simple literature review was also performed initially to identify some of the information needs and sources of software practitioners. Then we started survey by conducting the semi-structured interviews, based on the data obtained from the literature. Moreover, an online questionnaire was designed, after conducting the preliminary analysis of the data obtained from both the interviews and literature review. Coding process of grounded theory was used for analyzing the data obtained from the interviews and descriptive statistics were used for analyzing the data obtained from the online questionnaire. The data obtained from both the qualitative and quantitative methods is triangulated by comparing the identified information needs and sources with those that are presented in the literature.  Results. From the preliminary literature review, we identified seven information needs and six information sources. Based on the results of the literature review, we then conducted interviews with software practitioners and identified nine information needs and thirteen information sources. From the interviews we also investigated the aspects that software practitioners look into, while using different information sources and thus we identified four major aspects. We then validated the results from the literature review and interviews with the help of an online questionnaire. From the online questionnaire, we finally identified the frequency of occurrence of the identified information needs and the frequency of use of different information sources.      Conclusions. We identified that the software practitioners are currently facing nine type of information needs, out of which, information on clarifying the requirements and information on produce design and architecture are the most frequently faced needs. To address these needs most of the practitioners are using the information sources like blogs and community forums, product documentation and discussion with colleagues. While the research articles are moderately used and the IT magazines and social networking sites are least used to address their needs. We also identified that most of the practitioners consider the reliability/accuracy of the information source as an extremely important factor. The identified information needs and sources along with the practitioner’s perception are clearly elucidated in the document. A future direction of this work could be, testing the applicability of the identified information needs by extending the sample population. Also, there is a scope for research on how the identified information needs can be minimized to make the information acquisition more easy for the practitioners.

Evidencialidad y modalidad epistémica en dos variedades de toba habladas en Formosa, Argentina

Carpio, María Belén, González, Raúl Eduardo 25 September 2017 (has links)
This paper analyzes morphosyntactic strategies that encode evidentiality and epistemic modality in eastern and western Toba (Formosa, Argentina), from the functional typological perspective (Chafe 1986; Bybee et al. 1994; Givón 2001; De Haan 2001, 2005; Aikhenvald 2004; etc.). In eastern Toba, a reportative derived from a grammaticalyzed ‘say’-verb, and the use of two epistemic adverbs –ʔegoʔ~ʔekoʔ ‘apparently’ and yataqta ‘certainly’– are described. In western Toba, demonstrative roots plus the prefix ho-, after the modified element (noun, verb, adverb, or clause), are analyzed as a strategy of encoding epistemic modality, specifically low subjective certainty.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 3056914 bytes, checksum: a13d7a3bcf615b52a3675d23c687a02f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-08 / This is a doctoral research based on both, the concept of language as a social practice and on dialogism (BAKHTIN, 2010a, 2010b) as a natural phenomena of human discourse. Supported by Cultural Studies approach this work aims at investigating how the Potiguara narratives are constituted as an element to build up the Indians identities and to be a source of Indian information. The methodology applied was the Oral History (MEIHY; HOLANDA, 2010), the interview techniques and the participant observation. The work involved the analysis of written narratives and oral narratives and was developed in two moments: the first, a bibliographical and Internet research and the second, a field research. The data collection corresponded to the recording of oral narratives obtained in the Potiguara Indian settlement located in the cities of Rio Tinto, Marcação and Baía da Traição, in the State of Paraíba. The study of written narratives was done by the analysis of the book “Os Potiguara pelos Potiguara” (OS POTIGUARA…, 2010). By the use of different voices, the Potiguara people establish dialogues with the interlocutors and build their own discourse from others´ discourses (BAKHTIN/VOLOCHÍNOV, 2009). The research results show that the narrative language constitutes an element of (re)construction of the Potiguara identity and these narratives constitute Indian information source according to the users´ interpretation. Besides, the narratives corroborates the fact that popular short story is an elaboration within life (AYALA, 2011). The Potiguara narratives indicate the rupture with the colonizer discourse, once they demonstrate the incorporation of new values, that is to say that they resignify the previews colonizers´ values. When the Potiguara describe themselves, they stress new values such as: they are workers in sugar cane plantation or in the marshy ground, they live in houses not in the forest, and they take part in different religious practices. The Potiguara discourse releases the present from the past and introduces a counter discourse which negates the stereotypes produced by the colonizers; it is a discourse of resistance.

Travel vloggers as a source of information about tourist destinations

Birch-Jensen, Johan January 2020 (has links)
Travel vloggers are a relatively new phenomenon that appeared around 2016. These are travelers who share their experiences in a video format, mostly on YouTube. Whereas their motives might be out of self interest - in reality they market the destination they are in, drawing attention to new potential destinations for the viewer. The aim of this study is to examine the relevance of travel vloggers as a tourist research method. More specifically regarding tourists visiting Georgia, if travel vloggers are beeing used before departure, if it influences the tourists' perception of Georgia and what they want to experience when they visit. The study also intends to examine what travel vloggers show in their videos of Georgia. To analyze the results theories regarding guided tourism, cognitive distance and youth tourism will be used. The results indicate that travel vloggers are established as a tourist research method and that it does affect what tourist want to experience when they visit. It also shows that travel vloggers show what is considered not typical tourist attractions, differentiating them from more traditional means of research. The results could be linked with the theories regarding guided- and youth tourism, however not with cognitive distance.

The use of Polokwane Municipal Library services : a case of study of Moletji Public Library

Tjale, Matshidisho Caroline January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Information Studies) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / Information is an important element in the lives of citizens. Public libraries are drivers of access to information and knowledge, regardless of age, gender, race and political inclination. Entities such as public libraries have the role to play in providing informational, educational, recreational and cultural needs of the communities that they serve, but if they are challenged by issues such as underutilisation of some of their services, it calls for a prompt reaction. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. A questionnaire was used to collect data from library users at Moletji Public Library. Two-hundred and forty questionnaires were distributed, two-hundred and sixteen questionnaires were returned and were found to represent a 90% response rate which was usable for the analysis. The study found out that most users in Moletji Public Library preferred reading space and Internet over lending materials, and as a result, circulation statistics declined. Challenges such as walking a long distance to the library, limited resources, lack of space, noise and outdated books were also discovered by this study. The study provides Polokwane Municipality with valuable evidence of the underutilisation of services and resources at Moletji Public Library. It also suggests areas for improvement including training of personnel as well as more library infrastructure in previously marginalised communities. The study recommends that more computers and more space be provided and that libraries should keep up with the ever-changing needs of library users by conducting more studies about the needs of library users. This study reports the first Polokwane Municipality empirical study of the use of library services at Moletji Public Library. Keywords: Library; library users; information needs; information source; public library
