Eficiência da adubação nitrogenada no consórcio entre cafeeiro e Brachiaria brizantha / Efficiency of nitrogen fertilization in intercropping coffee and Brachiaria brizanthaPedrosa, Adriene Woods 17 January 2013 (has links)
The use of intercropping coffee and the Brachiaria is increasing within coffee farmers. In this production the fertilization is done generally in both species, without enough knowledge support for this. The N of the plant residue can be absorbed by the plant after mineralization, can be lost by various processes or even immobilized by micro biota. The use of isotopic enriched fertilizer is a tool that allows the evaluation of N of the fertilizer in component of the system, such as in the residue of forage, in soil and in the plant. This research was conducted to evaluate the growth and productivity of coffee plant, elaborate the N balance and evaluate the decomposition of biomass of Brachiaria under the canopy the crop as a source of this nutrient. The Brachiaria biomass under the coffee plant canopy reduced by 49% the water loss in dry months, with an increase in plant growth within the dry season that went throw March to September 2011. The gain in fruit development and the plant productivity were higher when applied an N doses of 50% within the coffee plant and 50% on the Brachiaria, which the wastes were deposited under the canopy of the crop for decomposition. The forage Bracharia recovered more N (84.28% of the applied or 126.42 kg ha-1) than coffee plant (38.63% or 57.94 kg N ha-1) with the application of the same dose of N in both plants. The N of the fertilizer recovered by the coffee plant was: 38.63% when all N was supplied to the plant, 14.31% (21.46 kg ha-1) when the application was made only in forage residue which was deposited under canopy of the plant, 53.3% (39.98 kg ha-1) from the fertilizer and other 15.28% (11.46 kg ha-1) from the decomposition of biomass in the application of the same dose of N in culture and forage. The growth rate of coffee plant (height and productive branches) in the dry season was superior when the culture and the forage received the same doses of N. The total net competition on N between the culture and Brachiaria was low, about 0.91 kg ha-1 to 0.34 kg N ha-1 (1.22 to 0.24%), not prejudicing the culture growth and productivity. The N loss due to leaching was higher when provided only to the coffee plant (6.05% of N applied or 9.07 kg ha-1) comparing to applying N exclusively to the brachiaria (1.02% or 1, 53 kg N ha-1). When applying equal doses in coffee plant and brachiaria the leaching varied from 3.4% of applied N (2.55 kg ha-1) under the canopy of the plant to 1, 15% (0.86 kg ha-1) in the forage area, grown between the crop rows. The rate of decomposition of the residue of Brachiaria was inversely proportional to the relations C / N and lignin / N. The cycling of N was faster when the reaping occurred up to 55 days of forage development.

Agronomic performance of wild mustard in an intercropping with green beans.Phiri, Nathan. January 2005 (has links)
Wild mustard (Brassica spp.) is used as an edible wild leafy vegetable by indigenous people
in South Africa. The potential of wild leafy vegetables in agriculture is not well understood,
because there is generally no agronomic research on their production practices. The objective
of this study was to examine the performance of three wild mustard species (herein referred
to as I, K and M) over four cropping seasons in an intercropping system with green beans
(Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Imbali). The crops were grown with and without organic fertiliser
under dryland conditions at two sites (The University of KwaZulu-Natal Research Farm,
Ukulinga and in a rural area of Umbumbulu, KwaZulu-Natal within the farmers' locality)
during autumn, winter, spring and summer of 2004 to 2005. Plant development (leaf number,
plant height and fresh biomass) during the first six weeks after sowing and seed yield were
used to determine agronomic performance of each species. Nutrient status of the rhizosphere
soil was determined at 42 days after sowing for each species to determine what effect
growing the species would have on mineral availability. Wild mustard production
significantly (P < 0.01) performed better at Ukulinga than Umbumbulu. Polyculture was
beneficial for wild mustard leaf accumulation and green bean production as determined by
land equivalent ratios greater than one for all species combinations, regardless of fertiliser
application. Cool environmental conditions occurring in autumn and spring were more
favourable (P < 0.05) for wild mustard and green bean biomass accumulation than summer
and winter conditions. However, wild mustard seed yield was highest in winter compared
with autumn and spring, and there was no measurable seed production in summer. Soil
analysis results at 42 days after sowing showed an increase in P, K, Cu and Mg in the
rhizosphere of wild mustard without organic fertiliser. Polyculture improved Zn, Cu, Mn and
K in wild mustard leaf tissue. It is concluded that wild mustard can be grown as a leafy
vegetable throughout the year, but it requires cool environmental conditions to enhance seed
yield. Species M significantly yielded better biomass and seeds than species I and K during
all the seasons. However, species K performed the least in all aspects. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2005.

Temporal and spatial effects of a long term large scale alley farming experiment on water table dynamics : implications for effective agroforestry designNoorduijn, Saskia L. January 2009 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] Removal of native vegetation to facilitate traditional agriculture practices has been shown to reduce ecosystem health, and restricts the native habitat. The subsequent change in the predominant vegetation water use patterns has altered the catchment water balance, and hydrology which results in land degradation through such processes of salinisation and water logging. More recently, moves toward more sustainable farming practices have been taken to help re-establish catchment hydrological equilibrium and improve catchment ecosystem services. Agroforestry is one such vehicle for this reestablishment. Perennial native vegetation has been shown to have a significant effect on catchment processes, mitigating any further degradation of the land. The effect of alternating native perennial tree belts with traditional broad acre agriculture in the alleys, referred to as alley farming, is investigated in this thesis due to the potential environmental and economic benefits that can result. This thesis investigates the impact of tree belts upon the water table and aims to gauge the ability of alley farming at controlling recharge within the low-medium rainfall zone on the valley floor. The basis of this research is the analysis of data collected from the Toolibin Alley Faring Trial. This experiment was established in 1995 to assess the viability of alley farming and incorporates different combinations of belt width, alley width and revegetation density. Transects of piezometers within each design have been monitored from October 1995 to January 2008. The piezometers were sporadically monitored over this period on a total of 39 dates. ... To further understand the response observed in the water table data, in depth hydrograph analysis of the control piezometer water levels was conducted. The statistical analysis demonstrates that the belts are having a very limited impact on the water table morphology, this is associated with the restricted use of groundwater by the perennial tree belts due to the poor quality, has been applied. This explains why there is limited signature of increased water table depth in the statistical analysis; there is evidence that alley farming as a means of reducing recharge may work however the overriding control on the trial are the rainfall trends rather than perennial growth. The low perennial biomass production at the site is an effect of limited water resources; however a significant distinction can be made between the water table depth and variability beneath high and low biomass belts. There are three main controls at the site; climate, development of perennial biomass and development of perennial root systems (both vertically and laterally). The regional climatic trends will influence water table levels creating a greater soil water storage capacity; therefore the contribution of soil water to transpiration rates will enable the tree belts to have some impact on recharge. Of the alley farming designs tested, the optimal planting density and belt/alley design, from an economic perspective, is identified as having a 4m belt width which generated the greatest biomass. As a means of controlling recharge at the site the effectiveness of alley farming is limited due the shallow saline water table limiting perennial growth.

The advanced studies on the interaction between atmospheric nitrogen-fixing bacteria and crops may contribute for the development of strategies to increase the mineral nitrogen-use-efficiency and decrease its dependency. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense on development and yielding of single maize or maize intercropped with Urochloa ruziziensis as well as the residual effect of this intercropping system associated with the nitrogen management in winter bean. For summer grasses, the experimental design included a randomized block with four replications and eight treatments, as follows: (T1 - maize, T2 - maize + Azospirillum brasilense, T3 - Urochloa ruziziensis, T4 - Urochoa ruziziensis + Azospirillum brasilense, T5 - maize + Urochloa ruziziensis, T6 - maize - Azospirillum brasilense + Urochloa ruziziensis, T7 - maize + Urochloa ruziziensis - Azospirillum brasilense, T8 - maize - Azospirillum brasilense + Urochloa ruziziensis - Azospirillum brasilense). For the beans succession planting, the experimental design included randomized blocks in an 8x4 factorial scheme with treatments consisting of the eight cover crops mentioned previously and the combination of four nitrogen doses (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1 N), with four replications. During the experiment, the following assessments were performed: cover crops, agronomic characteristics, yield components and crop productivity of maize and beans in addition to the physical properties of the soil. The inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense provided the single maize with increased dry weight of plants and grain mass per spike; moreover, higher rates of productivity growth were observed when compared to the other treatments. The intercropping with Urochloa affected the maize grain productivity; however, there was an increase in yield and quality of cover crops. The bean yield was influenced by the previous crop, with better results when maize was inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense. The application of 60 kg ha-1 N in coverage provided better bean yield results in the first year. In the second year, the treatments without application demonstrated satisfactory results, which can be due to the nutrient cycling from the cover crops. Improvement of soil properties over the 3 years of cultivation was observed in the treatments including Urochloa ruziziensis. / Agrisus: 1140/13

Consórcio de milho com adubos verdes e manejo da adubação nitrogenada no cultivo de feijão em sucessão no sistema integração lavoura-pecuária no cerrado / Nitrogen fertilization management in bean cultivated after maize-legumes intercropping in the Crop-Livestock Integration system in Brazilian SavannahPriscila de Oliveira 29 June 2010 (has links)
Ten experiments were performed involving common beans and maize intercropped with legumes and/or Brachiaria brizantha, in the summer crops of 2008/2009, 2009 winter and summer of 2009/2010 in two municipalities in the Goiás (GO) state, Brazil. In Ipameri- GO, the area was planted with soybeans for several years and corn associated with B. brizantha in crop preceding the experiments. In Santo Antônio de Goiás-GO, the area is maintained with corn or soybean rotation with B. brizantha, in a three-year scheme. The main objectives of these studies were to evaluate the feasibility of intercropping maize with legumes and the response of common bean after it, in no-tillage system, on the mulching straws provided by the cultivation of maize intercropped with forage legumes and grasses and to study the management of nitrogen (N) in these two crops. It was found that in soils with medium to high chemical fertility, such as those used in the experiments, the intercropping of corn and B. brizantha or pigeonpea (Canajus cajan) and sunn hemp (Crotalaria spectabilis) had any influence on grain yield of maize in the presence of mineral N, except in the experiment conducted in Santo Antonio de Goiás-GO, where the sunn hemp significantly reduced corn productivity. Also, in both locations, simultaneous or lagged consortium of pigeonpea or sunn hemp with maize, there was no release of N from legumes to maize, as measured by grain productivity, during the cycle of the species. However, in the consortia in which B. brizantha is maintained without drying between the maize lines, called partial desiccation, there was a significant decrease in the yield of corn in relation to the totally desiccated area. The growth analysis showed higher leaf area index (LAI) and total dry matter accumulation (TDM) for pigeonpea grown in single system, but for sunn hemp cultivated in the corn rows, both LAI and TDM approached to its single cropping, confirming its competitiveness with corn in the intercropping system. Growth curves also showed the superiority of the corn crop with 90 kg N ha-1 in both LAI and TDM, compared to intercropping with legumes. In the case of Santo Antônio de Goiás-GO the three-year rotation involving grain species and grass forages caused an intake of N in the soil, and high yields of beans grown in rotation with pasture were obtained, without the application of mineral N, occurring, though, significant increase in grain yield in the treatments of straws containing legumes. The application of mineral N immediately before sowing or at the seedling stage of beans and corn had a similar effect on their productivity compared to traditional application, a few weeks after the emergence of these species. The application of mineral N was more efficient in increasing the productivity of beans when applied on the soil surface near the plants rows and in cases where the fertilizer was mechanically incorporated into the soil, comparing to surface-broadcasting.

Efficient management of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) holds much potential in conservation and sustainable agriculture. Growing non-mycorrhizal Brassicaceae crops, including crops of great economic importance in North America such as regular cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) and broccoli (B. oleracea var. italica), has been associated with reduced AMF density in agroecosystem.
In the hope of reducing the negative impact of broccoli and cabbage culture on AMF abundance in fields, we cultivated these crops alongside mycorrhizal white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in a persistent intercropping system. We tested the impact of B. oleracea intercropping on (1) AMF root colonization levels and crop yield, and on (2) the AMF colonization speed and level, as well as the yield of a following mycorrhiza-dependent crop rotation, sweet maize (Zea mays L.)
In this study, we found that AMF could colonize and produce vesicles in B. oleracea crop roots, even when grown without a mycorrhizal intercrop, probably through other carbon sources. Intercropping with clover still led to more broccolis being colonized by AMF, but at a lower intensity than in sole crop plots. As expected, use of a persistent clover intercrop reduced colonization delay and increased yield of the subsequent maize rotation.

Assessing the Implementation of Sustainable Agriculture at Rosenhill farm in Ekerö, SwedenCarlsson, Mikael, Mageed, John January 2020 (has links)
This project is a Bachelor’s thesis conducted by two students at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The report aims to assess the implementation of sustainable agriculture at the farm Rosenhill, in the Stockholm region in Sweden, and provide potential agroecological solutions. The assessment of the farm functioned as a case study to explore possible ways to improve sustainable practices in agriculture. The method used for assessing agricultural practices in this thesis was drawn from the existing methods IDEA and complemented with the intent to find agroecological approaches. The data gathering was conducted through interviews and observations at the farm, as well as receiving complementing documents from the farm. The data from the interviews and observation was then compiled into a document and divided up into categories, corresponding to the indicators chosen for the analysis. Each individual indicator was first examined individually and, on this ground, concluding comments on the overall implementation of sustainable agriculture were drawn. Results show that the farm is implementing sustainable agriculture the ectively, however, areas of improvement were also identied. The following agroecological practices were further discussed as potential solutions to problems identied at the farm: Intercropping and/or Companion Planting, Cover-cropping and Reduced Tillage, and Agroforestry.
