This ethnography examines the intertwining of social markers such as aging, middle age, old age, sexuality, homoeroticism and intergenerational relations. The central goal is to understand how the experiences of aging and sexuality later in life are narrated by men who use websites that provide homoerotic interactions. To this end - and based on a qualitative methodology involving in-depth interviews, "on line" and "off line" informal conversations as well as participant observation - the following questions were explored: a) the management of social categories associated to mature men with homoerotic sexual practices; b) the narrative construction of temporal and generational sensibilities; c) the ways in which positive models of aging among men with homoerotic sexual practices and / or that identify themselves as homosexual have been gestated; d) the perceptions concerning the socio-spatial transformations regarding homosexual practices and identities in recent decades and, finally, e) the management of the social support networks in the aging processes of these individuals. The universe studied is composed of men who, in most cases, considered themselves as middle class, white, with a moderately high educational background, deeply involved in on line interactions, which have between 45 and 70 years old and live in São Paulo. For these men on line interactions have impacted in a positive way. These interactions were narrated as enabling significant new friendships and erotic relationships. Moreover, in contrast to some authors of the so-called LGBT Gerontology - who tend to overemphasize victimizing and disempowered scenarios as years go by - this work has foregrounded some relevant forms of agency throughout the lives and aging processes of the men who made part of my research / Doutorado / Antropologia Social / Doutor em Antropologia Social

The contribution of renewable energy technologies to sustainable community development in Rusitu Valley, Zimbabwe

Mavindidze, Zororo January 2012 (has links)
Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / This exploratory study is based on the case of the Rusitu Valley, a low income rural community in Zimbabwe. Data was collected using largely qualitative methods and quantitative methods were used to obtain supportive descriptive statistics. Information elicited from focus group discussions conducted with members of the Rusitu Valley community as well as responses obtained from a brief structured questionnaire were used to abstract the Rusitu Valley as a complex adaptive system. Input from in-depth interviews with government representatives in energy policy, local government and non-governmental organisations as well as a review of secondary sources was used to support the analysis and confirm the contextual validity of the study. This study revealed that there is intimate connection between renewable energy technologies and sustainable community development. A key finding was that the contribution of renewable energy technologies in Rusitu Valley is mostly towards the economic dimensions of the community and is relatively limited with regard to social and environmental dimensions. Therefore, this study concluded that renewable energy technologies have not sufficiently contributed towards sustainable community development in the Rusitu Valley. This study also found that the contribution of renewable energy technologies is constrained not only by internal limitations but also external factors. A conclusion drawn from this study was that effective contribution of renewable energy technologies towards social, economic and environmental facets can be enhanced through mainstreaming of renewable energy in policy and planning, as well strengthening institutions and local capacity which would have the overall effect of sustainable community development in low income communities

Orientador: Meire Cachioni / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Ciências Médicas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-27T03:50:15Z (GMT). This study consisted of three stages and the sample consisted of 148 elderly and 52 professionals bound to continuing education programs. The first stage tackled the semantic and cultural validation of Intergenerational Exchanges Attitude Scale (IEAS) into Portuguese of Brazil. This process involved the following phases: initial translation of IEAS; synthesis of translations; back translation; review and pretest. The scale has changed oriented to their cultural refinement and IEAS is adapted and validated for the Brazilian population with the denomination Escala de Atitudes em relação a Trocas Intergeracionais (EATI). The second part of the study derived evidence of construct validity for EATI and investigated correlations between items of the factors that scale with areas of Escala de Crenças em Relação à Velhice. The EATI presented three factors were obtained and higher values for the scale as a whole (? = 0.80) and Factor 3 - Perceptions about the interaction between children and the elderly (? = 0.80) and then for Factor 1 - Perceptions of attitudes of children toward elderly (? = 0.79) and for Factor 2 - Perceptions of elderly attitudes towards children (? = 0.73). Even though statistically significant, correlations between items of the EATI factors and areas of Escala de Crenças em Relação à Velhice were low. Finally, the third part of this study described and compared the behavior of a group of elderly and a group of professionals in the presence of EATI. Compared with professionals, the elderly showed more negative way perceptions of attitudes of children toward elderly (p <0.001) and expressed more positive perceptions of elderly attitudes towards children (p <0.001). There was a statistically significant difference among the elderly that living together and those not living together with children for to score factor Perceptions about the interaction between children and the elderly, being more negative in the elderly who do not live with children (p = 0.003). Professionals working with intergenerational groups presented more positively perceptions of the interaction between children and the elderly (p = 0.015) compared to those working only with older people. It concludes that the EATI can be a useful tool for programs that perform activities among children and the elderly as well as for professionals who develop intergenerational activities. In addition, the EATI had good internal reliability, enabling recommend its use in Brazil in descriptive and intervention studies / Mestrado / Gerontologia / Mestra em Gerontologia

Of duty, deen (faith), diaspora, and dilemma: narratives of care and intergenerational support exchanges in aging South Asian Muslim families

Khan, Mushira Mohsin 22 December 2020 (has links)
International migration flows have increased at a rapid pace over the past decade and are often accompanied by emergent and evolving global realities, fluid and permeable borders, (re)negotiation of identities and familial bonds, anticipated challenges, as well as unforeseen exigencies. Concomitantly, advances in public health and chronic disease management have resulted in longer lives with an increasing proportion of the global population now 65 years and older. While these demographic shifts have received considerable research attention over the past few decades, little attention has been paid to aging Muslim families and the ways in which they adjust and adapt to shifting global realities and social circumstances. Of the roughly 3.45 million Muslims in the US, nearly six-in-ten US Muslim adults are first-generation Americans. And among US Muslim adults who were born abroad, more immigrate from South Asia (35%) than any other region. This demographic trend, along with the aging of the US population, implies that South Asian Muslims will comprise a large segment of the US population aged 65 years and older in the coming years and greater attention needs to be paid to the lived experiences of mid- to late-life South Asian Muslim families in the US in order to better support their health and social care needs. This qualitative study addresses these issues, specifically focusing on the intersections of faith, culture, gender, age, and immigrant status, as well as intergenerational care and support exchanges within the family, and the ways in which everyday lived experiences and seminal life course events shape processes of meaning-making and sense of self in immigrant South Asian Muslim families. Building on findings from 30 in-depth narrative interviews with three generations of South Asian Muslim women living in the US, and using an intersectional lifecourse perspective, I explore the re-negotiation of familial bonds and the enactment of religious beliefs and practices such as those around filial expectations in a transnational Islamic context. In so doing, I highlight how, for the women in my study, their Islamic faith was a part of both the public sphere and a collective ideology as well as a deeply personal and intimate attachment that provided structure and continuity in their everyday lives. I suggest how attitudes, behaviors, and meaning-making processes related to kin-work and exchanges of support between generations may be shaped by categories of gender, age, time of and since immigration, and degree of religiosity. Finally, I situate these attitudes and behaviors within the broader framework of Islamophobia and salient structural barriers to accessing available health and social support services for immigrant South Asian Muslim women and their families. / Graduate / 2021-12-07

The Lifelong Consequences of Protesting : A Longitudinal Analysis of the Gendered and Intergenerational Effects of Protest Participation on Individuals’ Life-Course Patterns

Gisgård, Hannah January 2020 (has links)
Protesting is a common tactic used by social movements and the outcomes are widely researched in social movement studies. This thesis examines the biographical consequences of protest participation on individuals’ life-course patterns from a gendered and intergenerational perspective. The study employs regression analysis and a longitudinal dataset collected from the Swedish Level of Living Survey, which includes six panel waves in total stretching from 1968 to 2010. It consists of a nationally representative sample of the Swedish population between the ages of 15–75, in which the last two panel waves include the respondents’ children in the ages of 10–18. The results show that protest participants are likely to become more educated than non- participants and that they continue to remain active in political and union activities. Further, there is evidence of gender-based differences between protesters as women do not continue to uphold the same level of involvement in political organisations in comparison to men. No support is given to the expectation that protesting will have intergenerational effects. The results show that participating in protests may have long-lasting consequences for individuals and that there seems to be gender-based differences between protesters, which might have implications for individuals’ further involvement in political activities.

Interdépendances entre l'équité intra et intergénérationnelle dans la gestion durable des ressources environnementales / Interdependencies between intra and intragenerational equity in sustainable environemental resources management

Del Campo, Stellio 17 December 2018 (has links)
This dissertation proposes to show the interest of considering simultaneously intra and intergenerational equity for environmental resources management issues. More specifically, the dissertation examines the trade-offs between these two dimensions of equity to define an equitable allocation of resources over time and within generations. Inequalities between two heterogeneous regions are considered. The first chapter focuses on sustaining the highest level of welfare over time, through the maximin criterion, when the economy has an intragenerational inequality aversion. Counter-intuitively, the region with the lower resource stock pays a higher price for overall sustainability. The second chapter examines growth toward the maximum sustainable level of welfare, the golden rule. Similarly, the region with the lower resource stock shall contribute more to the growth, by limiting relatively more its consumption. The third chapter examines the transfers that shall be made from the well-off to the worse-off region. The transfer shall either be a lump-sum or proportional to the consumption of the contributing region, depending on whether the objective is to promote or to limit its consumption. In any case, the worst-off region receives a compensatory transfer for the constraint imposed on it.
