A content analysis of three Murdoch newspapersUnknown Date (has links)
This study examined the extent to which Rupert Murdoch has used a formula of sensationalism in his three metropolitan tabloid newspapers in the United States. Three 10-edition samples from the New York Post, the Boston Herald and the Chicago Sun-Times were compared over time and with each other by sampling period in their use of space for headline, text, photographs, and items by story type. Results indicate that aside from an increase in the amount of space and number of sports items at all three newspapers, the critic-predicted formula of sensationalism is supported only for light news and government news in the limited categories of overall space used, proportion of space used for graphics to text, and the number of items. Though no exact formula was evident, a consistent pattern was found that supports the critics' claims. Appropriate models for comparing newspapers and approaches for measuring sensational content are discussed. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 49-07, Section: A, page: 1607. / Major Professor: Thomas R. Technology in the Online Newsroom| The Use of Collaborative Tools in Virtual Team ManagementMcCudden, Kirstin A. 08 March 2019 (has links)

This case study gives a detailed description of the tools employed in the management of a news-producing virtual team. The research uses field observation and interviews to identify patterns of internal communication in an attempt to better understand the influence and uses of technology on organizational dynamics in general and media management in particular. The findings from this case study reinforce research suggesting that communication patterns and organizational structure, more than specific tools, play an important role in virtual team management. It also emphasizes the role of leadership as an important factor in tool choice and effectiveness. As organizations increasingly rely on virtual teams, managers are ever more tasked with effective supervision and can benefit from these findings.

'Love and courage'| Resilience strategies of journalists facing trauma in Northern MexicoChoice, Stephen 10 January 2017 (has links)

Mexico is widely known as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, according to advocacy groups and human rights organizations. The phenomenon is especially true in northern Mexico, where journalists have to cover violence committed by drug cartels that seek to hold on to turf in which to conduct operations to sell narcotics to the lucrative U.S. market. This study focuses on the types of trauma that journalists working in an environment marked by violence and threats experience, as well as the resilience they must employ to continue working as a professional there. Twenty-six print journalists in eight cities near the U.S. border have been interviewed to discover the types of trauma and the extent of resilience they have achieved, as well as the way they go about doing so. The study utilizes Shoemaker and Reese’s Hierarchy of Influences model to examine trauma and resilience.
