This thesis explores a topic attributed to the field of theatre studies. Its purpose is to deepen the knowledge concerning the evangelization theater of the 16th century that developed in Japan after the arrival of Jesuits in 1549, in order to better grasp the scope and the elements that define it.
Firstly, this type of dramatic art is studied within the context of the European religious theatre of the 16th century and in relation to the New Spain evangelization theater. Then, considering the investigations of Bourdon, Leims, Rubiera and Ruiz-de-Medina and after analysis of the four main collections of Jesuit letters in Japan, we dedicate our research to the only work, of those four, written entirely in Castilian: Cartas que los padres y hermanos de la Compañía de Jesús que andan en los reinos del Japón escribieron a los de la misma Compañía, desde el año de 1549 hasta el de 1571 (Alcalá, 1575), with the purpose of extracting and analysing all relevant information related to evangelisation dramatic art . In addition, we make a comparison of the main segment of epistolary text concerning this theatre (De una [carta] del hermano Juan Fernández, de Bungo para los padres y hermanos de la Compañía de Jesús, a ocho de octubre de mil y quinientos y sesenta y uno), which is identifiable in the four main correspondence collections mentioned above, in order to confirm possible content discrepancies.
The results of this research allow to update the available information related to Japanese missionary theatre of the 16th century, as well as to identify potential new study paths primarily through analysis of the critical edition of Ruiz-de-Medina and the missive collection from Évora (1598).

České středověké umění pohledem Katolického dějepisectví / Medieval Art in the Bohemian Lands Through the Lens of Catholic HistoryŠmied, Miroslav January 2017 (has links)
This paper deals with the history of the study and discipline called "History of Christian Art". It attempts to find the roots of the interest in history, sacred monuments, and national monuments of the past in the spiritual environment of the Czech lands, and its subsequent inclusion in the context of contemporary European developments of interest in art and its study. Beginning with the oldest hagiographic texts, which are not only records of literary history, but in many cases are important in terms of references to building monuments and artworks, among which Kristian's legend is dominant, through the texts of medieval chroniclers, Kosmas, his followers, the Chronicle of Zbraslav Monastery and chronicles from the reign of Charles IV., across the historiography of the Baroque period, which is without a doubt dominated by the work of Bohuslav Balbín and Thomas Pešina of Čechorod, and the period of national awakening, through a boom industry in the nineteenth century, when Ferdinand Josef Lehner made history with his founding work, to the culmination in the activities of representatives of the field the first half of the twentieth century, when it was represented by personalities such as Antonin Podlaha, Eduard Sittler, and Josef Cibulka. Based on the recapitulation and subsequent description of...

GESUITI E GESUITESSE. LA COMPAGNIA DI GESU' E LE CONGREGAZIONI SEMIRELIGIOSE FEMMINILI IN ITALIA TRA XVI E XVII SECOLOARLATI, FABIO 21 May 2021 (has links)
In spite of the Tridentine and post-Tridentine cloistered legislation, the 16th and 17th centuries witnessed the foundation in Italy, Europe and the mission countries of numerous semi-religious female congregations, without clausura and without solemn vows, founded, co-founded or directed by the fathers of the Society of Jesus. These congregations, called “Jesuitesses”, were inspired by the Jesuit Constitutions and Ignatian spirituality, especially in the educational apostolate. Through an in-depth archival research, the present study offers a vast census of the numerous houses of Jesuitesses present in Italy between the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries, showing, through the analysis of the network of relations between these institutes as well as the economic, juridical, educational and spiritual peculiarities of the semi-religious compared to the cloistered nuns, the substantial compactness and unity of this phenomenon, based on a common Jesuit identity. The aim is also to shed light on the contrasts and contradictions related to the affirmation of the Jesuitesses, which led to bitter internal clashes within the Society of Jesus, various inquisitorial trials and harsh jurisdictional conflicts between secular and ecclesiastical powers.

Tradition, Erudition and the Book: Aspects of the Bollandist-Carmelite Controversy, with a Critical Edition of the Pamphlet Novus Ismael (1682 & 1683), Including Translation and CommentaryLetsinger, Robert B. January 2009 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Between 1675 and 1698 more than 60 published works, ranging from ephemera – pamphlets, scurrilous libelli, dialogues, letters and articles – to multi-part volumes in-folio, were printed by the participants in a dispute over the antiquity of the origins of the Carmelite order. Though the broad contours of the quarrel between the Carmelites and Antwerp Jesuits who were their main adversaries is well known, it has yet to be analyzed in any significant detail. The following study undertakes such an analysis, first reconstructing the origins of the quarrel in the religious houses and print shops of Antwerp, next looking at the Carmelite perspective and the "argument from tradition" which buttressed the Carmelites' claims to antiquity, and lastly tracing the history of the "erudition" which allowed the Bollandists -- the Jesuit scholars responsible for that monument of hagio-historiography known as the Acta Sanctorum -- to mount their critique. An appendix presents a critical edition and translation of one of the better-known anti-Bollandist pamphlets, Novus Ismael.

This thesis explores the rivalries between Jesuit, Recollect and Sulpician missionaries in
the 17th century in New France. Specifically, it examines the polemical discourse about the
missionaries, whether it came from religious competitors or from members of the colonial
administration. Although these missionaries were all part of a common apostolic project, the
sources reveal that different networks were struggling at the time so that some missionaries could
enjoy a monopoly over the souls of the colony, while others were relegated to the background. In
this nascent Church, several disagreements that raged between these three religious families can
help to explain the tensions that we find in their writings. The main issues were the francization of
the First Nations and the founding of the bishopric of Quebec. Furthermore, the rivalries between
the Jesuits, the Recollects and the Sulpicians went far beyond the spiritual framework and regularly
led to commercial issues. Certain missionaries, the Jesuits in particular, were accused throughout
the century by various actors of enriching themselves in various ways, and of engaging in the fur
trade. Rather than focusing on the veracity of these attacks, this thesis proposes to analyze them
and to try to understand their origin and function. These accusations must also be put in relation to
the rivalries that the missionaries had to face in their other missions during the same period.

Previous issue date: 2007-04-10 / This study intends to reflect about what were the Jesuits motivation to come to Brazil and the inacian influence in the foundation of São Paulo city and even in the Brazilian way of being.
I tried to identify, in their actions, the simple act of christianize or a deeper and wider desire. I reached the conclusion that they were moved by Inácio de Loyola s spirituality who taught how to evangelize. Due to that, the respect to the indigenous culture and all the interaction work. They had problems concerning to the Christian dogmas in confrontation with the aboriginal thought. To facilitate this situation they ve created educational institutions that became places of humanist and religious formation. One of these schools, thanks to the intense dedication of professor Jose de Anchieta, attracted numerous inhabitants and turned to be the birth of a city that, today it is the second bigger city of the world / Este trabalho pretende refletir sobre o que motivou os jesuítas a virem para o Brasil e a influência inaciana na fundação da cidade de São Paulo e no próprio modo de ser brasileiro.

Giving Ignatian Exercises at ecclesial frontiersHeiding, Sven Fredrik January 2011 (has links)
The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order, presuppose Roman Catholicism, but are today made by many who are not Catholics. Moreover, even Roman Catholics who make Ignatian Exercises often are not spontaneously inclined to obey Roman ecclesiastical authority. Neither avoiding the ecclesial dimension nor an authoritarian ‘follow the rules!’ provides spiritual directors with adequate orientation when working with issues at Church frontiers. This dissertation in pastoral theology seeks to navigate a middle position by moving beyond the individualism and the a-historical assumptions of the existing relevant literature. The dissertation remains close to the Ignatian primary sources, in the awareness that the Ignatian tradition needs to be constantly updated and that the contemporary ecclesial frontiers are not fully foreseen in the canonical texts. The main hypothesis is that a notion is needed of a ‘pilgrim Church’ in space and time, with Christians who are related to one another in a deep and fundamental sense. The minor hypothesis is that the individual needs to be open towards and prepared to learn from the Roman Catholic Church, in order to understand and to be profoundly moved by these exercises, but not necessarily to become a Roman Catholic. Having presented and discussed various approaches in the writings of twentieth-century and recent thinkers, this thesis puts forward its own ecclesiological position informed by Charles Taylor, Hans-Georg Gadamer and Karl Rahner. The aim is to take Ignatian studies forward by combining relational anthropology, hermeneutics and a sacramental understanding of the Church, and to apply this synthesis to the practice of giving Ignatian Exercises. The final chapter discusses a selection of cases in the light of my ecclesiological position. The synthesis and application claim originality.

Kult sv. Františka Xaverského v českých zemích raného novověku / The Cult of St. Francis Xavier in Early Modern Czech LandsAndrle, Jan January 2011 (has links)
The work deals with the dissemination, duration, transformations and reception of the cult of an important Jesuit Saint, St. Francis Xavier, in the early modern Czech lands. Its goal is to contribute to the better understanding of the reality of the re-catholicization after the Battle of White Montain and the forms of Czech spirituality of the 17th and 18th century. This particular cult was selected because of the fact that St. Francis Xavier was closely related to the main (or most prominent) participant of the re-catholicization, i. e. the Jesuit order, where he in the informal hierarchy of Saints occupied the second place immediately after the founder of the Society St. Ignacius of Loyola. Moreover, St. Francis Xavier belonged among the five new Catholic Saints canonized in 1622 (St. Ignacius of Loyola, St. Francis Xavier, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Philipp Neri, and St. Isidore of Madrid), who represented an important constituent of the revived post-Tridentine Catholic spirituality. However, although the existing secondary literature presupposes that the reverence to St. Francis Xavier was widespread in the Czech Baroque, no systematic study of this theme was realized untill now. First chapter deals with the specification of the theme of the work, maps existing knowledge and sources available and...

ŽIVOT A DÍLO KONRÁDA MARIA KUBEŠE, T. J. (1890-1967) misionáře, kazatele, exercitátora a hlubokého mariánského ctitele / Life And Work of Konrád Maria Kubeš, T. J. (1890-1967): Missionary, Preacher, Excercitator and Deep Devotee of the Marian CultMIKULÁŠEK, Josef January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation in its first part inquires the life and work of Konrád Maria Kubeš (1890? 1967), a people?s missionary, a preacher, an excercitator and a deep devotee of the Marian cult. It is introduced with the socio-political history in 1890?1967, with the overview of the Popes and theological thinking between 1878 and 1978. Next, it looks in detail into each period of Kubeš?s life, his family background, high school studies in Hradec Králové, his theological studies in Prague, his entry into the monastic order and his activities in Society of Jesus. The dissertation pursues Kubeš?s life story in communist centralization monasteries, in Moravec, his short work in Bukovinka and finally his forced stay in Břežany near Znojmo. Afterwards, it analyses Kubeš?s theological work published in books and journals, as well his historical contribution. The final part of the dissertation evaluates Kubeš?s personality and his significance in the context of the Czech religious and monastic history of the 20th century. The author based his thesis primarily on archival recources, Kubeš?s short autobiographical memories, oral and written witnesses of his contemporaries and last but not least on secondary literature. The second part of the dissertation contains 182 text apendixes and 2 pictorial apendixes which are make up an indispensable and logical supplement to the whole picture of the life, work and contribution of Konrád Maria Kubeš.
