We prove in this thesis three main results, involving the distribution of values of $L'/L(\sigma,\chi_D)$,$D$ being a fundamental discriminant, and $\chi_D$ the real character attached to it. We prove two Omega theorems for $L'/L(1,\chi_D)$, compute the moments of $L'/L(1,\chi_D)$, and construct under GRH, for each $\sigma>1/2$,a density function ${\cal Q}_\sigma$ such that \[\#\{D ~~\text{fundamental discriminants, such that}~~ |D|\leq Y,~~ \text{and}~~ \alpha \leq L'/L(\sigma,\chi_D)\leq \beta \} \]\[ \sim \frac{6}{\pi^2\sqrt{2\pi}} Y \int_\alpha^\beta {\cal Q}_\sigma(x)dx . \]

This study examines problems of escape in the fictional writings of E. L. Doctorow. It makes clear that the characters in the stories as well as their creator frequently try to break free from restrictions or control--the protagonists physically, the author more theoretically. A description of the nature of the confinements as well as the difficulties associated with getting away reveals much about Doctorow's perception of 20th century American reality and the writer's place in it. Thus, the study moves from a relatively straightforward assessment of the kinds of escape featured in Doctorow's narratives and the way in which these are justified to a more complicated evaluation of Doctorow's situation as a writer in relation to his characters' predicaments and recent critical analyses of his prose.

A phenomenological study was undertaken to investigate pivotal moments in Guided Imagery and music (GIM) Therapy, from three perspectives: the client’s experience, the therapist’s experience and the music which underpinned the moment. The questions posed were: how do clients experience moments in GIM therapy which are pivotal – are there features of these experiences which are similar to all participants? How do the GIM therapists perceive these moments identified by their clients as pivotal – are there features which are similar to the GIM therapists? What are the features of the music which underpin the pivotal moments – are there similarities in structure and/or elements? (For complete abstract open document)
