Thesis (DTh)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is generally said that modern Korean church leadership has gradually lost its vitality. Since
the 1960s, many Korean church leaders have implemented secularised, church-centred, and
authoritarian leadership. However, without noticing these fundamental problems, the leaders
have identified the crisis with membership stagnation or decline. Such an inadequate or even
wrong diagnosis of leadership realities has led to a wrong way of addressing the problem. The
Korean church has focused on the development of a methodology for numerical church
growth to remedy this membership decline.
This study thus aims to construct a contextual yet biblical leadership theology by which the
Korean church can evaluate the realities of its leadership appropriately. This aim can be
achieved by means of the methodology that is employed in contemporary practical theology.
Chapter 2 provides a general understanding of the context in which Korean church leaders
have provided leadership by discussing Korean church history from the perspective of the role
that dominant leadership images have played. The result demonstrates that a sound theology
of church leadership needs to be constructed for the Korean church.
Chapter 3 reviews the trends in contemporary practical theology from which the methodology
employed by this study is derived. The chapter also surveys the historical development of
leadership theories in social science from which theoretical support can be obtained for the
critical analysis of Korean church leadership.
Chapter 4 develops a systematic theological theory (base theory) for two concepts that play an
integral role in this study. PTA (practical theological anthropology) and PTE (practical
theological ecclesiology) function as theological foundations for this study.
The four-phased methodology that this study employs starts with an analysis of the contextual
situation. Chapter 5, as the descriptive phase, gives a statistical analysis of the realities of
leadership in the Korean church by using several reports of surveys from reliable research
organizations.
Chapter 6, as the hemeneutic phase, presents an interpretive endeavour of the empirical
results from Chapter 5. Because of the inadequacy of mono-dimensional interpretation, this
study attempts to interpret the results of the analysis multi-dimensionally: religio-culturally,
socio-politically and economically, and theologically.
Chapter 7, as the nonnative phase, demonstrates some theological principles that the current
Korean church should develop in order to cope with the present leadership crisis and to
choose the right direction for its future. These theological principles can be derived from the
statistical analysis and its interpretation in the light of PTA and PTE. The principles are:
spirituality, vision, and love.
Chapter 8, as the strategic phase, proposes a model of leadership for the Korean church,
namely, servant leadership. This model can integrate and reflect the three principles
(spirituality, vision, and love) demonstrated in Chapter 7. The Korean church will be on the
right path if the principles of a servant approach characterise leadership in the church. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar word in die algemeen gese dat die hedendaagse Koreaanse kerkleierskap sy lewenskrag
geleidelik verloor het. Sedert die 1960s het baie Koreaanse kerkleiers sekulere leierskap,
kerkgesentreerde leierskap en outoritere leierskap gelmplementeer. Sonder om kennis te neem
van hierdie basiese probleme, het die leiers egter hul leierskapskrisis toegeskryf aan die
stagnasie of afname in lidmaatskap. Dit was 'n ontoereikende of selfs verkeerde diagnose van
die probleem. Die Koreanse kerk het deurgaans gefokus op die ontwikkeling van 'n
metodologie vir getallegroei in die kerk om die lidmaatskapsafname te probeer regstel.
Hierdie navorsing beoog dus om 'n kontekstuele teologiese teorie te ontwikkel waardeur die
Koreaanse kerk die realiteite van sy leierskap toepaslik kan evalueer. Hierdie doel kan bereik
word deur middel van die metodologie wat in praktiese teologie gebruik word.
Hoofstuk 2 bevat 'n beskrywing van die konteks waarin Koreaanse kerkleiers leiding geneem
het. Dit beskryf die Koreaanse kerkgeskiedenis vanaf die perspektief van leierskap. Die
resultaat demonstreer die noodsaak van 'n kontekstuele teologiese teorie vir kerkleierskap in
die Koreaanse kerk.
Hoofstuk 3 verskaf 'n oorsig van standpunte in hedendaagse praktiese teologie waaruit die
metodologie, wat in hierdie navorsing toegepas is, voortvloei. Die hoofstuk bied ook 'n oorsig
oor die historiese ontwikkeling van leierskapsteoriee in die sosiale wetenskap wat teoretiese
ondersteuning kan bied vir die voorstelle wat die studie maak.
Hoofstuk 4 ontwikkel 'n basisteorie vir twee sleutel konsepte in die studie. 'n PTA (praktiesteologiese
antropologie) en 'n PTE (prakties-teologiese ekklesiologie) funksioneer as
teologiese basis vir hierdie navorsing.
Die vier-fase metodologie wat deur hierdie studie geimplementeer word, begin met 'n analise
van die konteks. Hoofstuk 5, as die beskrywende fase, verskaf 'n statistiese analise van die
realiteite van die leierskap in die Koreaanse kerk deur verskeie verslae of oorsigte te gebruik
afkomstig van betroubare navorsingsorganisasies.
Hoofstuk 6, as die hermeneutiese fase, bied 'n poging om die empiriese resultate van
Hoofstuk 5 te vertolk. As gevolg van die ontoereikendheid van eendimensionale interpretasie,
poog hierdie studie om die resultate van die analise multi-dimensioneel te vertolk: godsdienskultureel,
sosio-polities en ekonomies, en teologies.
Hoofstuk 7, as die normatiewe fase, demonstreer sommige teologiese beginsels wat die
huidige Koreaanse kerk moet ontwikkel om die huidige leierskapskrisis die hoof te bied en
die regte rigting vir die toekoms te kies. Hierdie teologiese beginsels kan afgelei word van die

This study is concerned with the style of leadership needed to enable the church to fully express itself in mission. The renewed ecclesiology of the Second Vatican council, in which the church is said to be missionary by nature, is reviewed. The fundamental structure of the church is described theologically under the themes of the people of God, creation of the Holy Spirit and the body of Christ. A study of the Council's teaching on a pyramidal style ofleadership leads to the conclusion that it is inadequate for implementing the teaching on the missionary nature of the church. A review of post-Vatican II ecclesial movements worldwide points to a strong desire among many for a church of greater participation with a more personal leadership
style. A study of leadership in the corporate world shows how a servant-style is replacing the traditional pyramidal structure. It is shown how this servant-leadership style could also be used in the church. The results of a qualitative research study of St. Joseph's Parish in Metro Manila, Philippines, are presented. This shows how the pastor gathered around him a group of lay leaders who share and express his style of servant-leadership. This part of the study begins by setting the historical context within which this parish exists by giving an overview of the history of the church in the Philippines and then shows how the leaders of St. Joseph's Parish motivated a passive congregation to become a church-in-mission. This occurred over a number of years through the parishioners being invited to full participation in parish life and becoming involved in service of those in need. An intense formation programme by parish leaders, who used a servant-leadership style, helped lead this parish from its former passivity to a manifestation of the missionary nature of the church. The research design followed in this study is qualitative. The target population of this study were the
leaders of the Free State Department of Education who have had self-acknowledged spiritual intelligence experience in their leadership context. The construct `spiritual intelligence` is a relatively complex phenomenon; hence the participants were recruited through a snowball sampling technique.
The findings of this study revealed that spiritual intelligence contributes to leadership
in the public sector. This study revealed that there is an association between leadership and spirituality and spiritual intelligence according to the subjective views of the participants. This suggests that researchers need to recognise the core component of internal development of leaders. The research attempted to bring

Thesis (DTh (Practical Theology and Missiology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / This statement is not only the theoretical outcome of this study, but also the
experience of the practical ministry of the researcher. Since the first senior pastor in
the Dutch Reformed Church was appointed five years ago (in 2000), many other
macro congregations followed suit. However, there was no frame of reference,
theological foundation or church tradition which could provide guidelines for these
newly appointed leaders. That coincided – initiated by the new political dispensation
since 1994 – with huge transformation on the political, economic, social and religious
scene in South Africa. That gave input to the research problem that traditional forms
of leadership was insufficient in the contemporary situation of macro congregations
in South Africa, and to the researcher’s hypothesis that transformation needs current
and contemporary developments in leadership.
In the hermeneutical process the researcher first of all listened to congregational
practice and context via semi-structured interviews with five senior pastors of Dutch
Reformed Churches. The outcome was that a vast amount of information regarding
transformation in the communities, ministry models, leadership requirements and
forms of leadership were accumulated. Although there were obvious differences, there
was also a correspondence about transformation in the context, ministry- and
leadership-models. The appointment of senior pastors was part of a total
transformation process.
This lead to an investigation of transformation in the macro context. A massive wave
(tsunami) of transformation of timeframes, thinking systems, paradigms and shifts
from christendom to post-christendom, modernism to post-modernism, towards
globalization and information technology, and major shifts in the South African and
the Dutch Reformed Church contexts (through the lenses of census 2001 and
Kerkspieël 2004), were detected.
The hermeneutical circle took the research to the investigation of transformation in
Scriptural contexts. Many examples of transformation in the context, ministry models
and leadership models were found. From Scripture it would appear that God led
believing communities to react in every contemporary situation with new ministry
models through the charismata, ministries and leadership functions for that situation.
The study of 1 Timothy not only showed transformation in the context of the
community and congregation, but especially how a new symbolic world was created
through the use of the metaphor of the “household of God” so that the ministry model
and leadership model were reinterpreted to suit their current situation.
The researcher came to the conclusion that the appointment of senior pastors or
congregational leaders in the Dutch Reformed Church was a current and
contemporary answer to the demands of a time of transformation. Ultimately
leadership is a contextual hermeneutical function.

Foundations for a Biblical Model of Servant Leadership in the Slave Imagery of Luke-ActsCochrell, Timothy Robert 18 June 2015 (has links)
This dissertation proposes that secular paradigms of servant leadership, rooted in the writings of Robert Greenleaf, are deficient theologically based on their humanistic presuppositions and deficient biblically based on their misunderstanding of the biblical language of service. This study proposes a model of slave leadership articulated in seven principles which are rooted in the slave language employed in Luke-Acts.
First, the slave leader becomes God's own possession through redemption and therefore the leader belongs to God and is placed under the Lord's absolute authority. Second, the leader's identity is found exclusively in his relationship to the Master which entails great responsibility as the leader represents God in his service. Third, a slave leader exercises delegated authority from the Master, therefore his words and actions carry weight, not because of who he is, but because of whom he serves. The leader is both in authority and under authority, accountable to the master and responsible for the people he serves.
Fourth, the slave leader focuses on pleasing the Master by subordinating his own will to that of the Master. The slave leader is expected to internalize the will of the Master so that he demonstrates the character and priorities of the Master in every leadership situation, even in the absence of explicit commands. Fifth, the leader as slave is compelled to give complete and unconditional obedience to God as Master. The leader may not pick and choose which of the master's commands to obey. The faithful slave carries out the will of the master, calling Him Lord and living it out. Sixth, just as a slave was entirely dependent upon the master for provision and direction, so a slave leader is constantly dependent upon the Lord and His indwelling presence for empowerment and discernment. Finally, the slave may be susceptible to abuse or mistreatment as a result of his unconditional obedience to the Master's will.

"Organisation development is a planned, systematic process in which applied behavioral science principles and practices are introduced into ongoing organisations toward the goal of increasing individual and organisational effectiveness. " [French and Bell] This study describes and analyses the implementation of Organisation Development (OD) to an Anglican Church theological seminary, The College of the Transfiguration (Cott), in the Anglican Church of the Province of Southern Africa (ACSA). The origins of OD are business related, emerging in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Over the years, and recently in South Africa, OD has been applied in educational change initiatives. Unlike more traditional change strategies, OD promotes collaboration in organisational change processes through the inclusive participation of all stakeholders. This study is unique in the sense that OD is applied to an Anglican Church theological institution in Southern Africa. The goal of theological institutions, particularly Cot!, is to "form, inform and transform" (Cot! Prospectus, 2011) those who feel called to ordained ministry. Personal experience in this practice has confirmed that organisational emphasis is placed more on product than process; on results rather than the leadership and management of the organisation. This study was an attempt to introduce a process of planned change to such an organisational context. OD was introduced to The College of the Transfiguration in the form of action research using the Survey Data Feedback (SDF) strategy. Data gathered was interpreted and analysed, followed by action planning and implementation of agreed plans. The process had a positive impact on both stakeholders and the organisation despite the challenges associated with the unpredictable world of organisations. Ultimately, I propose tentative recommendations which could help Cott and other educational institutions to achieve long-term improvement in organisational leadership and management.

The purpose of this dissertation is to determine what constitutes the abuse of power by leaders in Christian organisations and how it can be addressed, especially in a multicultural context. The theoretical and empirical research defines the abuse of power, especially in Christian organisations, and outlines the results. It determines the role that culture plays in the abuse of power and presents strategies that can be used effectively to prevent or deal with the abuse of power in different cultural contexts in Christian organisations. The cultures considered in the empirical research are English-speaking Canadians, Germans (from what was formerly West Germany), and white South Africans.
In this research, the abuse of power, the aspects that define abusive leaders and the victims, and the effects of the abuse of power on the leaders, victims and the organisations are discussed. The literature and the responses from the research participants clearly confirm the existence of abusive leadership in Christian organisations. The characteristics that constitute an ethical Christian leader are defined and underlined by the responses from the respondents in this research: spiritual transformation, love, servant leadership, accountability, trust and forgiveness. Addressing the abuse of power in Christian organisations, specifically in a multicultural context is challenging. Leaders must be prepared to learn about and understand the cultures represented in the team. This study examines archival materials, pertinent literary sources, and nine interviews, (identified in Chapter One), in order to understand the leadership spirituality of Multnomah Bible College and its impact on the organisation today. To accomplish this goal, a study of spirituality and, in particular Christian Spirituality was undertaken. Since Multnomah was established during the American Bible Institute Movement, the movement itself was researched to understand its theological and historical context. With this background in mind, the academy was researched to gain knowledge into its specific theological and historical context. The historical and theological trends in the Pacific Northwest were investigated first, along with influential individuals, to gain insight into what specifically motivated the inauguration of the academy in Portland, Oregon. After gaining insight into why the academy was established, the study was expanded further into a brief history of the development and expansion of the institution itself from 1936 to the present. This more extensive historical and theological background provides the necessary platform in understanding the present situation at Multnomah and its possible future. Subsequently, the individual spiritual journey of nine Multnomah leaders were explored through qualitative interviewing, the most effective means of obtaining such personal information. The findings shed light on their leadership spirituality and impact on the academy. This dissertation is a Christian-ethical comparison of Western and Tanzanian leadership styles and their impact on cross-cultural partnerships. Christian ethics and the two cultural models by Hofstede, and Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars provide a framework for the analysis, interpretation, comparison and evaluation of both leadership styles. This study combines theoretical and empirical qualitative research in a dialectical process. The data are generated through interviews, observations, case studies, group discussion and literature. The main leadership features of character, relationship, power and conflict in the West and in Tanzania are described and compared. Furthermore, Western and Tanzanians enter into a cross-cultural dialogue on leadership issues to discover the differences, strengths and weaknesses and what they can learn from each other. Both leadership styles are evaluated in light of the Scripture. Practical action steps are proposed to move towards a truer Christian leadership style.
