Application of Lean Methods and Multi-Objective Optimization to Improve Surgical Patients Flow at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital

Norouzi Esfahani, Nasim 24 August 2011 (has links)
This research has been defined in response to the Winnipeg children's hospital (WCH) challenges such as long waiting times, delays and cancellations in surgical flow. Preliminary studies on the surgical flow revealed that definition and implementation of successful process improvement projects (PIPs) along with application of an efficient master surgical schedule (MSS) are efficient solutions to the critical problems in WCH. In the first phase of this work, a process improvement program including three major PIPs, is defined and implemented in WCH in order to improve the efficiency of the processes providing surgical service for patients. In the second phase, two new multi-objective mathematical models are presented to develop efficient MSSs for operating room department (OR) in WCH.

How can Lean contribute to create effective meetings? : A case study at Ericsson in Borås

Au-Yeung, Ginsun, Andersson, Mattias January 2015 (has links)
Lean is a philosophy that has been studied extensively in recent years, and it has been successfully implemented in a number of different processes and businesses. This study aims to examine how Lean can contribute to create effective meetings, which is a topic that has received limited attention in today’s research. Firstly, a situation analysis is done in order to identify common meeting problems at Ericsson Borås. Secondly, a comprehensive analysis is conducted concerning whether Lean is applicable on meeting processes or not. This analysis is mainly based on the five principles of Lean Thinking. Thirdly, the study investigates the potential effect of an implementation of Lean, as well as how Lean principles can be applied in order to reduce or eliminate wastes. The result of the analysis formed the base for the development of the action plan. Subsequently, the action plan is implemented on the meeting processes by pilot testing it on three different meetings. This analysis is mainly focusing on whether the meeting problems have been eliminated or not. Based on our research, we have perceived that almost every meeting is unique and all meeting problems we have identified do not occur at all meetings. Majority of the meeting problems were eliminated by applying Lean principles. Moreover, several respondents also expressed that Lean is a good way to give more structure to meetings, and therefore contributes to more effective meetings. However, we have noticed that principles of Lean cannot eliminate all meeting problems at Ericsson. This can be seen as minor criticism when organizations use Lean as the only solution to improve meeting processes.

Clean with Lean : En kvalitativ studie över receptionsprocesserna i hotellbranschen

Lundqvist Sundberg, Terese, Svaneby, Natasha January 2009 (has links)

Packaging effects on logistics activities : A study at ROL International

Leek, Tobias, Hassel, Johan January 2006 (has links)
Packaging has a major impact on the activities performed in a logistical value chain. Packaging can improve or decrease the efficiency of the outbound logistics process. It is therefore important to consider the activities and the value that they add to the overall process. ROL International is a Swedish store interior manufacturer that design, produce and distribute their products on a global basis. One of their basic products is the shelf concept. ROL wants to improve their efficiency and consider a change in the packaging method for the shelf concept. Two alternative packaging methods have been suggested and ROL want to know if either of the two alternatives would result in increased efficiency. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the two packaging alternatives and their impact on the activities connected to the outbound logistics at ROL International. Since the study was conducted at request from ROL International, it is considered as a qualitative single case study. Observations, mainly at ROL’s warehouse but also through an observation at one customer’s premises, were used for determination of the activities included throughout the studied process. In addition to the observations, interviews were conducted with key persons concerned with the effects of a change in packaging method. Secondary data in form of order and shelf statistics were important for the study due to its impact on the frequency in which the studied activities are performed. The study found that neither of the two suggested packaging alternatives are suitable for implementation in the present situation. This is mainly because of the increase in activities needed to perform the packaging of shelves, which would result in increased cost that cannot be justified through enhanced customer service and higher quality. More-over, the study also found that the current process for picking customer orders are ineffi-cient and might require a restructuring of the warehouse operation in order to become more efficient.

Agile Methods in large-scale software development organizations:applicability and model for adoption

Laanti, M. (Maarit) 08 January 2013 (has links)
Abstract Agile methods have proven to be beneficial in small organizations, and there has also been growing interest in using these methods in large organizations. This dissertation analyzes what agility and agile development are and creates a framework for using those methods in large organizations. The work starts with a Concept Analysis of Agile Software Development and agile-in-large. The theoretical part also reflects the necessary background of Complex Adaptive Systems, Lean Thinking, and Learning Organizations. Then a model of an Agile Enterprise is defined and a Framework for Organizational Development and putting Agile Methods into use in large software development organizations is presented. Large development organizations consist of many levels. It is not enough to use Agile Methods on a certain level only, e.g., on the lowest level, but all levels need to change and adapt to the new way of working. Failure to do so leads to several unwanted consequences, which are described. One possible large-scale Agile Framework is described and analyzed. The usage of Agile Methods on a large scale is validated by quantitative studies. The level of success of using an Agile Framework on a large scale is dictated by how much the same framework for operation is shared within the organization, as partial transformation leads to confusion. But smaller successes can lead into organizational learning. The framework that is proposed can be used to further enhance agility. In this way large-scale agility can be seen as a never-ending series of systematic improvements of the enterprises’ Agile Aspects. Suurissa kehitysorganisaatioissa on monta tasoa. Ketterien menetelmien käyttö isossa yrityksessä on validoitu kvantitatiivisin menetelmin. Isoissa yrityksissä ketteristä menetelmistä saatu hyöty on sidottu siihen miten hyvin koko organisaatio pystyy noudattamaan samaa ketterää toiminnan mallia – osittainen toimintatavan muutos johtaa toimintatapojen konflikteihin. Kuitenkin myös osittaiset onnistumiset voivat johtaa organisaation oppimiseen. Esitettyä mallia voidaan käyttää kehitettäessä toimintatapaa entisestään ketterämpään suuntaan. Tällä tavalla suuren organisaation ketteryys voidaan nähdä jatkuvana sarjana systemaattisia toimintatavan parannuksia, joista jokainen johtaa entistä ketterämpään toimintatapaan.

Waste in Lean Software Development : A Root Cause Analysis / Waste in Lean Software Development : A Root Cause Analysis

Medidi, Prasadbabu January 2015 (has links)
Context: Removal of wastes is a crucial area in lean software development. It has been found that there was little evidence on root causes of wastes in lean software development. Root causes from the state of practice had not being investigated. Furthermore, relations between wastes were now successfully exposed through root cause identifications process. Objectives: The objective of this study was to perform an in-depth investigation to identify causes which lead to wastes in Lean software development process in the context of medium to large software development. To this end, researcher also identified relationships that exist between wastes. Methods: The researcher conducted Literature review to look for evidence on waste related activities offered in peer-reviewed literature. Furthermore, the author conducted seven semi-structured interviews and used Grounded Theory method for both literature and interview data analysis. Results: The researcher identified three categories of factors of wastes. Namely, Technical, Non-technical and Global software product development. In the technical category, factors relating to different technical aspects to build a product such as required resource issues, solving complexity issues among others were identified. Similarly, factors relating to people knowledge, management issues as well as factors that bothered on communication, coordination and temporal distance were identified as non-technical and global software product development respectively. For all seven kinds of wastes the root causes were identified. / 0046734784551

To assist in the management process, it has been sought to adopt the concept of lean thinking that emerged in the automotive industry and it has been adapted to various segments because of its efficiency. They have developed several theoretical works on the subject, but there are still difficulties in the implementation in construction due to low education of the workforce; lack of organizational diagnosis, among others. This work aims to present a form of training for the workforce with a focus on reducing waste and loss based on the concepts of lean thinking. Classified as action research, the following steps were included: (1) literature review on teaching methods, training and lean thinking; (2) development of preliminary proposal of training and capacity and its evaluation mechanisms and subsequent (3) application and validation (4) final proposal for the training and qualification method. The application shows that the model developed contributes to filling thegap between the lean construction theory and the practice of construction. The uniqueness of the model consists of the application of the training with pedagogical foundations of learning styles to best suit the target audience.
