Design and Implementation of Reconfigurable and MIMO Antennas for Future Heterogeneous Wireless Systems

The recent progress in electronics and communication technologies has driven the unprecedented demand for multi-functional wireless communication in most single wireless devices. However, employing the limited spectrum effectively on communication equipment poses a key design challenge, as most antennas often suffer from bandwidth limitations and restricted frequency rarge. Onekey approach to overcome this problem without significantly affecting the antenna size is to apply antenna tuneability and reconfigurability. This is achieved by electronically changing some properties of the antenna usually by loading the reactive loading of the resonator by means of active electronic elements including varactor diode or PIN diode with extra circuitry. The main objective of this research is to design and investigate low-profile antennas for heterogeneous wireless systems using the antenna reconfigurability concept through tuning and/or using the MIMO antenna techniques. The research focuses on antenna design and implementation to cover various wireless standards and applications within the electromagnetic spectrum including UMTS (1.92-2.17 GHz), Cognitive Radio such as WLAN and WiMAX (2.4GHz), Wi-Fi (5.2GHz), 5G (600MHz - 6GHz) and MBAN applications. A family of compact microstrip printed reconfigurable antennas for various cognitive radio applications is presented. Effects of various slots on the antenna performance are also investigated, and the final version was reconfigured across a broad frequency range (1.5 - 2.4 GHz) Furthermore, four new variants of the miniaturised hexagonal-shaped monopole printed antennas for different UWB applications are proposed. Prototypes of the four versions are fabricated and compared to establish their results. Two reconfigurable rejection bands are introduced to avoid anticipated interference with other systems working within the UWB range. Finally, a novel low-profile four-element MIMO antenna was designed and fabricated to operate at the 2.4 GHz ISM band. both measurements and simulation results revealed strong agreement. Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / Modern technology is making virtual environments a part of daily life. However, some constraints about the usage of virtual environments, such as the need for high performance and well-configured computers, prevent users from accessing virtual environments in some places other than special computer rooms. Mobile devices may be used to solve this limitation in a virtual environment. The remote-control approach to access virtual worlds on the Internet or on a corporate network is a new concept that opens new doors to users. First step of this approach is already in use, such as games implemented for mobile devices using the screen of a mobile device as display, and has given satisfying results for some users. This research will take the user, who not only wants to be mobile but also does not want to sacrifice high resolution textures and complex models, closer to his/her goal. Mobile devices provide mobility to the user, but sacrifice not only the reality of the virtual environments but also screen size, which is very important for visibility of complex virtual environments. The hybrid approach with wireless internet connection by using mobile devices as remote control gives the user the advantages of mobility over desktop PCs. The rapidly growing demand for UWB as high data rates wireless communications technology, since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated the bandwidth of UWB from 3.1GHz to 10.6 GHz. Antenna also plays an essential role in UWB system. However, there are some difficulties in designing UWB antenna as compared to narrowband antenna. The primary requirement of UWB antennas is be able to operate over frequencies released by the FCC. Moreover, the satisfaction of radiation properties and good time domain performance over the entire frequency range are also necessary. In this thesis, designing and analysing printed crescent shape monopole antenna, Planar Inverted F-L Antenna (PIFLA) and Planar Inverted FF Antenna (PIFFA) are focused. A Planar Inverted FF Antenna (PIFFA) can be created to reduce the potential for interference between a UWB system and other communications protocols by using spiral slot. The antennas exhibits broadside directional pattern. The performances such as return loss, radiation pattern and current distribution of the UWB antennas are extensively investigated and carried out. All the results have been demonstrated using simulation and experimentally whereby all results satisfy the performance under - 10dB point in the bandwidth of UWB. In addition the miniaturization of MIMO/diversity Planar Inverted-F antenna (PIFA) which is suitable for pattern diversity in UWB applications is presented. This antenna assembly is formed by two identical PIFAs, a T-shaped decoupling structure which connects the two PIFAs and a finite ground plane with a total compact envelope dimension of 50 x 90 x 7.5mm³. The radiation performance of the proposed MIMO antenna was quite encouraging and provided an acceptable agreement between the computed and measured envelope correlation coefficient and channel capacity loss.

Målet med denna studie var att studera olika aspekter av den prioritetsordning som används för att prioritera elanvändare i svenska elnät i händelse av nationell-, regional eller lokal elbrist. Studien redogör för hur prioriteringar av olika elanvändare går till och hur nyttan av olika elnät förändras utifrån en beslutsfattares egna preferenser, vidare redovisas hur samverkan mellan olika elnät påverkar den totala nyttan som varje invånare i ett samhäller erbjuds. Objekten i ett samhälle som förekommer på ett elnät delas in i åtta prioriteringsklasser beroende av objektets funktion. Området för denna studie har varit beslutsanalys. Studien har genomförts med hjälp av resultat från tidigare studier och teorier kring beslutsanalys, med detta som grund har en simulering genomförts för att påvisa hur nyttan av ett elnät ändras då förutsättningarna ändras. Förutsättningarna har varit; total kapacitet av elektricitet till samhället, avstånd mellan samhällen och de olika objektens efterfrågan av elektricitet. Studiens resultat har påvisat att ellinjer med objekt av hög prioriteringsklass ska prioriteras före ellinjer med objekt av låg prioriteringsklass. Vidare har studien visat att det kan finnas elnät i ett samhälle vars nytta skulle kunna vara större än de elnät som förespråkas av prioritetsordningen, och att dessa kan vara disjunkta. Detta för att prioriteringsordningen ska prioritera det elnät med högprioriterade objekt, inte nödvändigtvis det elnät med störst nytta. Studie har därmed resulterat i att elnät bör prioriteras efter dess nytta och att en beslutsfattare bör vara medveten om elbristens storlek, avstånd mellan samhällen och varje objekts efterfrågan av kapacitet för att kunna fatta ett bra beslut. Gällande samverkan mellan elnät visade studien på att detta kan genomföras om avståndet mellan samhällena inte var för stort. / The aim of this study was to study the Styrel concept as an approach to identify electricity users and prioritize them in the event of a power shortage on a power grid. The study has examined and investigated how the priorities of different electricity users go to, how the benefits of manual disconnection change according to the decision makers' different priorities and how interaction between different local networks affects total utility. The features of a community on a local area, also called objects, are divided into eight priority classes depending on the function of the objects. The area for this study has been decision management. The study has been conducted using results from previous studies and theories on decision analysis as the basis for constructing a simulator that simulates how the power of a power failure changes for a local area dependent on the extent of the electricity supply (capacity). The study's findings have shown that prioritization of electricity supply line with higher priority classes should be prioritized than an electricity supply line with lower priority classes. This is also the result of previous studies. On the other hand, the study has shown that the fixed asset for an electricity supply line with lower priority objects is higher than an electricity supply line with higher priority objects, but with less benefit, priority should be given to the electricity supply line of higher priority objects. This study has thus resulted in the fact that electricity supply lines should be prioritized after the benefit if a decision maker is aware of the extent of the deficiency. Current collaboration between local networks showed that this could be dependent on the factors: distance, risk profile of decision makers and change of benefit through collaboration.

藉由研究無線通信產業標準的制訂過程與主流標準的形成機制,本研究探討過去有關影響產業標準建立的文獻與個案,提出系統發展過程中,各影響因素扮演的角色與提供的功能,以瞭解在無線通信產業中,影響一標準脫穎而出成為市場主流的關鍵因素。本研究主要的研究發現如下: 一、政府的政策對標準後續發展相當重要,若政府態度是採開放競爭,則將在境內形成多種標準競爭而耗掉大部分能量,未來在標準向外推展上較吃虧。反之政府若能主導統一標準,常能使相關資源更集中焦點來發展單一標準,未來對外推展上較能成功。 二、協會能否發揮協商能力,使各業者提出之標準能相結合,是主流標準形成之關鍵之一,協會若能使各業者放棄成見,取得共識形成單一標準將有助於標準之發展。 三、對標準主導者而言,若能成為主流標準確實擁有很多潛在利益,為爭取標準的支持度,便會有很多遊說及策略聯盟產生,若能取得越多成員支持,常較能形成主流標準,因此標準擁有者若能降低權利金門檻,甚至將其免費授權並公開架構,標準成為市場主流之成長速度將會加快。但若成員過於複雜也容易阻礙標準演進的進度。 四、第三代行動電話的應用以多媒體為主,這是相當革命性的嚐試,故能否找到消費者公認的殺手級應用服務(killer application)成為成敗關鍵要素之一。 五、標準形成之發源地需有足夠的經濟規模量的支持,才能累積足夠資源向境外擴展。 六、標準形成在發酵期必須取得單一標準共識,在漸進變化期於境內快速建立成功經驗,並順利將成功複製於境外地區,這個模式較能成功成為主流標準。另在建立標準時需有明確的願景與目標、具國際化的規格設計,才可減少在對外擴展時之障礙。 / This thesis is intended to make explicit the roles played and functions provided by the various factors in the process of system development by means of an investigation of the process of the formation of a wireless communications standard and the mechanism that makes it a dominant. By studying the documents and cases on the factors affecting the establishment of a standard, we have come to recognize six fundamentals that make it stand out as a dominant. These six fundamentals are summarized as follows: 1. The policy made by the government plays an essential part in the further development of the formation of a given standard. If the government adopts an attitude of open competition, then lots of related resources will be wasted on the keen competition between vying forces in the local market, which is, in turn, detrimental to outward expansion. On the contrary, if the government integrates the related resources and helps form a unitary standard, the standard may succeed in opening other markets. 2. The Association is also an important positive contributor in the process of the formation of a unitary standard. The Association should do its best to mediate between each vying standard to reach an agreement and adopt a unitary standard, which is definitely instrumental in the further development. 3. For those who want to direct the formation of a standard and get the tremendous potential profits from it, they will do a lot of lobbying and form strategic alliances to attract more supports for the standard. When succeeding in doing so, the owners of the unitary standard can speed up the growth of its market by lowering the royalty and license limit, or even by opening its architecture with a free authorization. 4. The application of the third-generation cellular phones features multi-media, which is a considerably revolutionary attempt. Therefore, the success of it depends on whether the standard can come up with a killer application that appeals to consumers. 5. The local market from which the standard originates should be big enough to support it, so the standard can stand firm on the strong basis and reach out for other markets. 6. The formation of a standard should be based on an agreement of a unitary standard at the ferment stage. And at the transition stage, it should build up a successful experience as soon as possible in the local market and then successfully duplicate the model in the international ones. Besides, a definite goal and a clear vision as well as internationalized regulations and designs all contribute to lifting the barriers in its expanding outwards.

In this thesis we study the key requirements and solutions for the feasibility and application of Ethernet-TCP/IP technology to the networks we termed Highly-Variable Real-Time Networks (HVRN). This particular class of networks poses exceptionally demanding requirements because their physical and logical topologies are both temporally and spatially variable. We devised and introduced specific mechanisms for applying Ethernet-TCP/IP to HVRNs with particular emphasis on effective and reliable modular connectivity. Performance Modelling Of TCP-Controlled File Transfers In Wireless LANs, And Applications In AP-STA Association

Our work focuses on performance modelling of TCP-controlled file transfers in infrastructure mode IEEE 802.11 wireless networks, and application of the models in developing association schemes. A comprehensive set of analytical models is used to study the behaviour of TCP-controlled long and short file transfers in IEEE 802.11 WLANs. The results can provide insight into the performance of TCP-controlled traffic in 802.11 WLANs in a variety of different network environments. First, we consider several WLAN stations associated at rates r1, r2, ...,rk with an Access Point. Each station (STA) is downloading a long file from a local server, located on the LAN to which the AP is attached, using TCP. We assume that a TCP ACK will be produced after the reception of d packets at an STA. We model these simultaneous TCP-controlled transfers using a semi-Markov process. Our analytical approach leads to a procedure to compute aggregate download as well as per-STA throughputs numerically, and the results match simulations very well. Performance analysis of TCP-controlled long file transfers in a WLAN in infrastructure mode is available in the literature with one of the main assumptions being equal window size for all TCP connections. We extend the analysis to TCP-controlled long file uploads and downloads with different TCP windows. Our approach is based on the semi- Markov process considered in above work, but with arbitrary window sizes. We present simulation results to show the accuracy of the analytical model. Then, we obtain an association policy for STAs in an IEEE 802.11 WLAN by taking into account explicitly an aspect of practical importance: TCP controlled short file downloads interspersed with read times (motivated by web browsing). Our approach is based on two steps. First, we consider the analytical model mentioned above to obtain the aggregate download throughput. Second, we present a 2-node closed queueing network model to approximate the expected average-sized file download time for a user who shares the AP with other users associated at a multiplicity of rates. These analytical results motivate the proposed association policy, called the Estimated Delay based Association (EDA) policy: Associate with the AP at which the expected file download time is the least. Simulations indicate that for a web-browsing type traffic scenario, EDA outperforms other policies that have been proposed earlier; the extent of improvement ranges from 12.8% to 46.4% for a 9-AP network. We extend the performance model by considering _le sizes drawn from heavy-tailed distributions. We represent heavy-tailed distributions using a 1 mixture of exponential distributions (following Cox's method). We provide a closed queueing network model to approximate the expected average-sized file download time for a user who shares the AP with other users associated at a multiplicity of rates. Further, we analyze TCP-controlled bulk file transfers in a single station WLAN with nonzero propagation delay between the file server and the WLAN. Our approach is to model the flow of packets as a closed queueing network (BCMP network) with 3 service centres, one each for the Access Point and the STA, and the third for the propagation delay. The service rates of the first two are obtained by analyzing the WLAN MAC. We extend this work to obtain throughputs in multirate scenarios. Simulations show that our approach is able to predict observed throughputs with a high degree of accuracy.

O longo período no qual este problema vem sendo objeto de pesquisa e a quantidade de algoritmos que foram para ele propostos atestam, não só a sua importância, mas também a dificuldade de se obter soluções eficientes para DTO. Este trabalho apresenta um novo algoritmo de DTO, que explora a sincronia e a confiabilidade inerentes ao ambiente dos aglomerados ou clusters de alto desempenho para construir uma solução bastante simples de Difusão Totalmente Ordenada, cujo desempenho experimental mostrou-se comparável ao obtido por soluções de DTO projetadas para modelos assíncronos de computação. O protocolo proposto destina-se ao modelo assíncrono temporizado de computação, aumentado com um mecanismo simples, baseado na difusão de pulsos, para sincronizá-la a execução dos processos. A hipótese que sustenta este mecanismo de sincronização é que os aglomerados modernos, dado que se controle a carga a eles aplicada, podem executar por períodos razoavelmente longos sem que ocorram falhas de processos e apresentando um comportamento bastante similar ao de sistemas síncronos. Dada esta hipótese, os processos que realizam Difusão Totalmente Ordenada tornam-se capazes de construir visões globais da computação distribuída, e a construção de visões globais, por sua vez, torna trivial a resolução de Difusão Totalmente Ordenada. O protocolo proposto tolera uma quantidade ilimitada de falhas de desempenho, que previnem o progresso da solução de DTO, mas que não levam à violação de suas propriedades de segurança, que são asseguradas na presença de assincronia e de falhas de processos. O protocolo foi implementado em Java e o seu desempenho foi avaliado em um aglomerado com máquinas interconectadas via Ethernet. A comparação dos resultados obtidos com os resultados de desempenho publicados para as principais soluções de DTO existentes nos permite afirmar que nossa solução representa um interessante compromisso entre desempenho experimental e simplicidade de projeto e implementação de soluções de Difusão Totalmente Ordenada. Além dos resultados de desempenho, esta pesquisa também revela que ainda há espaço para a exploração prática da interação entre sincronia e assincronia na engenharia de protocolos distribuídos / Abstract: Total order broadcast algorithms are at the core of several toolkits for the construction of fault-tolerant applications. The importance and the difficulty of finding efficient total order broadcast (TOB) algorithms is attested by the long period that such algorithms have been the object of intense research and by the large number of algorithms already proposed. This work presents a new algorithm for total order broadcast that takes advantage of the inherent reliability and timeliness of high performance clusters in its design. Experimental results show that the performance of this very simple TOB is on a par with the performance of TOBs designed for asynchronous computing models. The proposed protocol has been designed for the timed asynchronous computing model, enhanced with a simple pulse-based mechanism that is used to synchronize the processes' execution. The assumption behind the pulse-based synchronization is that modern clusters, given some workload conditioning, can maintain reasonably long failure-free execution periods in which they behave very much as synchronous system. This assumption allows the processes that engage in total order broadcasts to build a global view of their joint computation and this global view, in its turn, allows them to solve total order broadcast in a straightforward way. The protocol tolerates an unbounded number of timing failures, that can prevent its progress but have no impact on its safety, it is also safe in the in the presence of asynchrony, and processes failures. The protocol has been implemented in Java and tested on an Ethernet-based cluster. A comparison of the results obtained in the experiments with results published for other well-known TOBs allow us to conclude that our solution represents an interesting trade-o_ between performance and simplicity of design and implementation for total order broadcasts protocols. In this diploma thesis, the reader is familiarized with polymer optical fiber (POF). Firstly is mentioned theoretical background of optical fibers and optical transmission. The following are the basic properties and significant parameters of POF, a more detailed description of each type POF and their essential advantages and disadvantages in comparison with established optical fibers based on glass. The next chapter describes the area of practical issues: working with fibers and fiber installation, as well as the available connectors and methods of measurement of POF. Closely are analyzed knowledge of the practice, including the utilize in the aerospace and automotive industries, as well as in industrial networks, access data networks and local area networks. The practical part includes the measurement of basic transmission and mechanical parameters, including analysis of the results. The conclusion summarizes all the findings and results of this work, including possible future developments.
