THE ORCHESTRA DA CAMERA OF LONG ISLAND: AN HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARY OF A CATALYST FOR ARTS IN EDUCATION, 1957-1982 (NEW YORK).

HERBISON, JOSEPH ROBERT. January 1984 (has links)
The Orchestra da Camera, founded in 1957 by Ralph and Flori Lorr, is a remarkable organization devoted to offering a variety of music experiences for public school students and the general population on Long Island, and in New York City. Despite the fact that the da Camera has received national recognition for the innovations it has made in bringing professionally performed music to public school students, and the population of the suburban area that offered a paucity of professional musical productions on a local level, there has never been any significant record made of this history of the da Camera, or of the founders. The purpose of this study has been to offer an oral history of the Orchestra da Camera, with a special emphasis on the etiology and progress of the da Camera as perceived by Ralph and Flori Lorr. With this history now recorded, it is possible that other musicians, music educators, and arts organizations might find it useful to refer to the da Camera as a model for future community and in-school music programming.

The sediment sources of Atlantic shore beaches between Montauk Point and Democrat Point, Long Island, New York, USA

Morgan, Peter January 1990 (has links)
Speculation has arisen regarding the possibility of an additional offshore sediment source on the Atlantic inner shelf south of Long Island, New York, as a result of deficits in recent south shore budgetary estimates. In view of the importance of Long Island's inner shelf as a possible sediment source for other conflicting commercial uses in the future, the present study attempts to compare the known source at Montauk Point with sediments from buried palaeodrainage channels and nearby offshore and to examine the degree to which they may be linked to south shore beaches. Samples from each of these three environments were subjected to S.E.M. analysis using a checklist approach. Qualitative results comparing individual quartz grain surface feature variability with transport distance west of Montauk Point divided the south shore into three sections largely on the basis of mechanically derived and source textures: the distinctive glacial deposits formed in Ronkonkoma moraine at Montauk Point; Headlands section beaches, and Fire Island beaches. Surface feature variability plots and between sample variability plots revealed a more complex pattern of surface feature development than may be expected from what appears to be generally a single alongshore-trending wave dominated regime, which suggests an additional control such as an offshore source. Canonical variate analysis, as well as cluster and factor analyses confirmed qualitative findings and tentatively link offshore lobe deposits with onshore Fire island beaches, and distinguish them from Headlands beaches and Montauk Point. Strong supporting and complementary links between qualitative results, photographic evidence and subsequent statistical analysis suggest that the technique employed is a useful and valid sedimentological tool.

Rethinking suburban housing: Advocating for multi-family transit oriented development in Long Island

January 2018 (has links)
Over the past century, suburban living has been a sign of prosperity and a manifestation of the American dream. Owning a large single-family home, a spacious yard and a car have become a measure of success. The trend towards suburban habitation has created a surge of sprawled development that has led to an inefficient built-environment The attitudes, and lifestyles of the current young population are no longer the same; millennials are getting married and starting families later, with a greater demand to settle in urban areas. They are placing higher value towards living near jobs and walkable amenities and are choosing to wait longer on purchasing a home. The increased demand for urban living has caused city rents to skyrocket. The percentage of individuals who live in urban areas is expected to increase by 20% in the next 35 years. The overpopulation of cities has caused a surge in housing costs - making urban settlement increasingly unaffordable. The suburbs fail to provide millennials and young profession s with an adequate supply of rental housing due to its dominate presence of single family homes. The expensive cost of cities, along with the lack of viable housing in the suburbs has many young professionals stuck, in search of a feasible place to live. The suburbs have potential to be urbanized, and to provide a mix of housing types that accommodates a more diverse set of residents, however, there is a slew of pre-development hurdles that halt the process of high-density housing construction. This is especially seen in Long Island, NY, where residents are hesitant to allow the production of multi-family projects in their backyard. Transit Oriented development can serve as a solution to this problem, by stimulating the growth of long island towns, minimizing traffic impact, and catering specifically to millennials and seniors. This would allow the built environment of areas outside of transit hubs to preserve their single-family character, and would have little effect on the existing structure of school districts. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Some aspects of currents in Long Island Sound

Swanson, R. Lawrence (Robert Lawrence), 1938- 17 December 1970 (has links)
Current observations were obtained at three locations forming a cross section along 70°34'W longitude in Long Island Sound. Fifteen days of data were selected from each series so that nearly simultaneous observations were used in the analysis. Elementary statistics were computed for the data prior to performing a least squares tidal current analysis. Eight tidal current constituents were fitted in two cases and nine in the remaining instance. Constituent current ellipses were constructed along with the average ellipses. Using the constituents previously computed, the tidal current was predicted for the period of observations. These values were subtracted from the observed current, generating a residual current series. Spectra were computed for each directional component along with cross spectra between the north and east components and also between corresponding components at each of the three different locations. Coherence square and phase relationships also accompanied the latter. An attempt was also made to correlate wind and the residual current by means of cross spectra. However, lack of sufficient wind data prevented a meaningful analysis. The natural period of oscillation of Long Island Sound was estimated by Defant's method of seiche analysis for a bay. This value was used in the equations for a cooscillating system and a comparison was made between the computed and observed amplitudes of the tide. The mean percent error for numerous locations throughout the Sound was 7.1%. Comparison was also made between the maximum flows computed from the above equations and some observed values. The maximum percent error was 24% in an ebbing direction. / Graduation date: 1971
