Its main historical source is O Jornal das Senhoras, the first magazine written by women and targeted at a female readership. Based on the contextualization of Rio de Janeiro, the press, women, and the patriarchal family, it discusses the importance of education for women in the positivist vision of the writer of O Jornal das Senhoras, Joana Paula Manso de Noronha, and in the Christian vision of Violante A. X. Bivar e Velasco, both of whom desired the moral emancipation of women. It then goes on to discuss maternity, understood as a divine mission by the writers of the journal, although with different points of view. Finally, it addresses the importance of the press as a means of dispensing advice on fashion, care of the body and beauty for women. The press was the media used to divulge new ideas of progress, with the aim, through its pedagogical discourse, of preparing women for the transforming process that the city was going through / Esta pesquisa histórica busca questionar as mudanças e permanências na história das mulheres de elite e das relações de gênero na segunda metade do século XIX no Rio de Janeiro. Tem como fonte histórica principal O Jornal das Senhoras, primeiro periódico escrito por mulheres, direcionado ao público feminino. Partindo da contextualização do Rio de Janeiro, da imprensa, das mulheres e da família patriarcal, debate-se a importância da educação feminina na visão positivista da redatora d O Jornal das Senhoras Joana Paula Manso de Noronha e na visão cristã de Violante A. X. Bivar e Velasco, ambas visando à emancipação moral da mulher. Na sequência se discute a maternidade, tida como missão sagrada pelas redatoras do jornal, embora com pontos de vista diferentes. Por último, aborda-se a importância da imprensa na difusão da moda, dos cuidados com o corpo e do embelezamento da mulher.
