Abastract: It is common to find cracks in bricks masonry not just after some time of the construction but, the appearance of these unpleasant cracks, are also common during the contruction work. After some research it is possible to verify that, among other factors, one of its cause is due to the humidity absorbed by the elements of the wall (bricks and mortar. Now, this humidity may come from the air (e. g. a humid day), from rain, from the ground and from an exaggerated amount of the water mixed in the mortar laying. These when in contact with theporous elements of the wall will induce a capillary percolation that creates considerable internal stress that will give origin to displacements. These displacement are usually different for the brick and for de mortar (deltaLBrick#deltaL mortar) and because of that cracks will appear. With that in mind, it was decided to study this subject initially without bulky and sophisticated equipment for the measurement of capillary flow. Our approach was to make the analysis by obtaining medium values for the pressure and fluid speed, measuring the general deformations of the bricks.

A seguir, exploramos as principais correntes
No terceiro capítulo,
Subjacente
This graduate thesis aims to identify the artistic devices and their relations on
Shaun Tan's picturebooks which are directed to cause estrangement. Thus, by
drawing theoretical and methodological relations with Literature and Art, we
propose to expand research on the concept of estrangement within the field
of Design, broadening its scope on the collaboration of discussions regarding
artistic devices in general. Besides, it supports picturebooks studies by an
aesthetic approach and conveying autonomy as a mode of pictorial and narrative
experimentations for illustrators, artists and authors. To answer our research
problem, on the first chapter, we aim to particularize the meaning of
estrangement by establishing a genealogy of concepts and authors related to
the cognitive phenomenon of estranging. Next, we delve into the main modern
aesthetic currents and their concepts: alienation, the uncanny and ostranenie.
Specifically, we look over Viktor Shklovsky's recent readings that emphasize
the concept's ethical and political implications as opposed to prevailing
structuralist readings up to the end of the 20th century. Then, we begin the
second chapter by discussing the concept of medium and follow Russian Formalism's
meaning in order to argue for the idea that picturebooks and comics
are categories that operate according to the parameters of graphic narratives.
Then, we establish the properties of the medium aiming to expound their devices
on the analyses. On the third chapter, we present Shaun Tan in order to
consider the ways that his works relate life and art. Through his artistic path,
we understand the circumstances and personal motivations, and by exploring
his pictorial techniques and his imagery, we visualize his aesthetic motivations
that develop images that comprehend worldviews. At last, we analyze three
picturebooks according to their relations between picture and text: The Red
Tree (2001), The Arrival, (2006) and Tales from Outer Suburbia (2008). Underlying
their specificities, Shaun Tan's picturebooks display devices of estrangement
for they are able to realize the fantastic and estrange the mundane, allowing
the reader to "trans-live" the experience through the poetic perception
unlocked by the work of art.

Exploring the Roles of English: English as a Lingua Franca in Master's Programmes at WU Vienna University of Economics and BusinessKomori-Glatz, Miya 21 April 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Europe's largest business university, WU sees offering master's programmes in English as a means to stay competitive. This paper highlights the roles of English and other languages at a strategic level in the university as well as in intercultural student teams. The data is taken from a multi-modal research project investigating students' language and interaction in teamwork on English-medium programmes. The results show that students use English as the medium of communication in and out of class and for discussing task-related topics, while they use other languages for socialisation purposes and to develop a sense of community. Barriers and facilitators to transitioning of small businesses (SMME’s) from the second to the first economy in South AfricaAswani, Frank 18 March 2010 (has links)
This Research was undertaken to explore and better understand the perceptions of SMME owners, in South Africa, of the financial and non financial barriers and facilitators to the formalization/transitioning process. The study was motivated by the lack of data on the South African context of the barriers and facilitators of the formalization process. The conversion of enterprises from informal to formal concerns is not well researched and understood. In the absence of hard data, experienced observers and practitioners in the small business field express extreme skepticism about the efficacy of attempts to convert informal businesses to formal ones, (Bernstein, 2004). The research was conducted, mostly in Alexandra township Johannesburg, by means of 20 in-depth, semi-structured, face to face interviews with SMME owners; 10 operating informally and 10 who formally were, but have since transitioned/formalized. The resulting findings showed that lack of access to information on formalization and limited access to cash or credit are the major non financial and financial barriers respectively. Improved access to information on formalization is the major non financial facilitator and ability to access a bigger market plus increased access to cash or credit are the major financial facilitators. These findings also indicate that there may be a difference in the barriers and facilitators to formalization in South Africa as compared to what’s reported internationally in the literature. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

Firm Size and Technology Commercialization in Canada's Biotechnology and Manufacturing Sectors with a Focus on Medium-sized FirmsEl-Haj-Hassan, Boushra January 2012 (has links)
Innovation and commercialization are crucial for the competitiveness and economic well-being of countries. Despite the importance of innovation, recent studies have showed that Canada is lagging behind other countries in terms of its innovation and commercialization performance. The claim is often made that Canada performs well in generating the knowledge needed for innovation; however, the problem lies in transforming this knowledge into commercial success. Thus, a major preoccupation is how to turnaround this weak commercialization performance. Despite the wide range of programs, policies and regulations implemented by the Canadian Government along with its provincial counterparts to engender a turnaround, little has changed in Canada’s commercialization performance. Therefore, the search for solutions continues.
Given that commercialization takes place at the firm-level, this study will explore the relationship between firm-size and commercialization. Several existing studies have examined the link between innovation and firm size, but few have examined the link between commercialization and firm size.
Despite the arguments supporting medium-sized firms’ ability to commercialize innovations, there is a weak empirical base that explores the position of Canadian medium-sized firms and their innovation and commercialization capabilities. This study will contribute to the existing knowledge by covering the gap in the literature concerning the role of medium-sized firms in commercialization, compared to small and large firms. This study provides evidence suggesting that small and medium-sized firms should be considered differently.

A Measurement of the Proton Structure Function g2p at Low Q2Huang, Min January 2016 (has links)
<p>Experiments at Jefferson Lab have been conducted to extract the nucleon spin-dependent structure functions over a wide kinematic range. Higher moments of these quantities provide tests of QCD sum rules and predictions of chiral perturbation theory ($\chi$PT). While precise measurements of $g_{1}^n$, $g_{2}^n$, and $g_1^p$ have been extensively performed, the data of $g_2^p$ remain scarce. Discrepancies were found between existing data related to $g_2$ and theoretical predictions. Results on the proton at large $Q^2$ show a significant deviation from the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule, while results for the neutron generally follow this sum rule. The next-to-leading order $\chi$PT calculations exhibit discrepancy with data on the longitudinal-transverse polarizability $\delta_{LT}^n$. Further measurements of the proton spin structure function $g_2^p$ are desired to understand these discrepancies.</p><p>Experiment E08-027 (g2p) was conducted at Jefferson Lab in experimental Hall A in 2012. Inclusive measurements were performed with polarized electron beam and a polarized ammonia target to obtain the proton spin-dependent structure function $g_2^p$ at low Q$^2$ region (0.02$<$Q$^2$$<$0.2 GeV$^2$) for the first time. The results can be used to test the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule, and also allow us to extract the longitudinal-transverse spin polarizability of the proton, which will provide a benchmark test of $\chi$PT calculations. This thesis will present and discuss the very preliminary results of the transverse asymmetry and the spin-dependent structure functions $g_1^p$ and $g_2^p$ from the data analysis of the g2p experiment .</p> / Dissertation

Internet as Aesthetic MediumŠparada, Renata January 2021 (has links)
The dissertation explains the internet as an aesthetic medium, authorship in the medium and platforms’ influence on the medium’s aesthetic function. This is achieved by analysing the actual art that uses the internet as an aesthetic medium. The aesthetic function of the internet as a medium is different from its informative and communicative function. It entails manipulation of the medium defined by the permanent and instant interconnectedness of the digitalised instances or representations of people, things, artificial intelligence and information to achieve a specific aesthetic aim. Internet as a medium, similarly to comics and film, allows for different kinds of authorship. A typical example of art that uses the internet as a medium is a meme. This is because memes involve meta-level discussions and group authorship, elements that are most easily facilitated by the internet as a medium. Art that uses the internet as an aesthetic medium can be single-authored if the sole author manipulates digital interconnectedness in an aesthetically significant way. Besides this general level of how the internet is characterised as a medium, there is a practical level that includes platforms on which artwork is made. These two levels are necessarily connected. Even though platforms also manipulate digitalised interconnectedness, they do not erase the internet’s potential as an aesthetic medium because artists manipulate this already manipulated content.
