Like other species of the Testudines order, it is oviparous, meaning the females lay their eggs in the environment. The objectives of this article are to describe the morphology of the oviduct of P. geoffroanus as observed through light microscopy after performing standard histochemical techniques (AB pH 2.5, PAS, Mallory?s trichrome, xylidine Ponceau), besides identifying the endocrine cells in the various regions of the oviduct that produce motilin, serotonin and somatostatin through immunohistochemistry. The oviduct of this turtle is composed of five regions: the infundibulum, which receives the oocyte released at the moment of oocytation; the tube uterine (magnum), the spiraled region that produces the albumen; the isthmus, a transition region; the uterus, responsible for producing the egg shell; and the vagina, the final portion of the oviduct, which leads to the cloaca. The structure of the oviduct of P. geoffroanus is similar to that of other oviparous reptile species. Its description can be used for phylogenetic morphological comparisons. The immunohistochemistry study revealed the absence of neuroendocrine cells that produce motilin, serotonin and somatostatin in all regions of the oviduct. However, the existence of these cells in the gut of this turtle was verified, enabling the suggestion that the regulatory peptides produced by these cells are carried by the bloodstream and reach specific receptors on target cells located along the oviduct, to regulate the peristaltic movements of this organ.

Effect of Mica Content on Surface Infiltration of Soils in Northwestern Kern County, California

Stakland, Steven Keyes 01 December 2010 (has links)
A soils infiltration rate (IR) is the measured rate that soil is able to absorb water, either from precipitation or irrigation. A low IR can cause damage to crops if the necessary amount of water cannot penetrate to the plant roots in the time needed. The damage can be common in permanent plantings such as almond and pistachio orchards where regular tillage is avoided. This indicates a physical aspect to the problem because tillage increases IR. However, there is also an electrochemical side to infiltration problems because certain calcium surfactant treatments can increase IR. Various other methods have been used to increase IR such as using cover crops and increasing organic matter. Despite these different approaches to the problem, the specific cause of low IR is often unknown. This study was conducted to determine what physical properties of soils from a site in California cause low IR. This research shows the relationship of these properties to low IR. It was assumed that high amounts of mica in the very fine sand and coarse silt fraction of soils in Northwestern Kern County, California may interact with other physical and chemical properties to reduce IR. Fourteen sites were sampled in the area near the towns of Wasco and Shafter. The soils sampled represented the typical agricultural soils of the area and exhibited three levels of infiltration, Good (no amendments), Moderate (requires gypsum), and Poor (gypsum application is insufficient). Mica percentages in the very fine sand and coarse silt were calculated using a petrographic microscope and compared to the overall IR of the fields. Mica was shown to be significant factor at all three levels of IR.

L?pez Lepique, Andrew Leonardo January 2017 (has links)

Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescent Zinc Phthalocyanine Pigments And Its Combination Pigment With Mica Titania Pig Ment

Kahya, Sevinc Sevim 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In the present work, zinc phthalocyanine and tetra nitro substituted zinc phthalocyanine were sytnhesized by using phthalic anhydride and nitro phthalic acid precursor respectively under microwave irradiation. Molecular structures of these pigments were confirmed by FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy analyses. Furthermore, these pigments were deposited on mica-titania pigment substrate in dimethyl formamide solvent to obtain the combination pigment. FT-IR analysis was conducted to analyze the deposition of pigments onto the mica-titania surfaces. Fluorescence spectroscopy analysis was performed to observe zinc phthalocyanine, tetra nitro zinc phthalocyanine pigments, and their combination pigment with mica- titania pigments. The surface morphologies of zinc phthalocyanines on the mica titania pigments were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Optimum deposition temperature and deposition time were determined by v depositing varying amounts of zinc phthalocyanines. The paint samples of these combination pigments were prepared by alkyd based paint formulation. L*a*b* values of the paint samples were determined by color measuring spectrophotometry. The optimum deposition temperature was determined as 120 oC and the optimum deposition time was determined as half an hour and effective deposition was obtained at 120 &deg / C. It is observed that, with the increasing amount of ZnPc, the interaction between ZnPc particles increases and they desorp the surface of mica-titania pigment. The best result was obtained with 0.08 g ZnPc at 120 oC.

Exosomes and the NKG2D receptor-ligand system in pregnancy and cancer : using stress for survival

Hedlund, Malin January 2010 (has links)
Although not obvious at first sight, several parallels can be drawn between pregnancy andcancer. Many proliferative, invasive and immune tolerance mechanisms that supportnormal pregnancy are also exploited by malignancies to establish a nutrient supply andevade or edit the immune response of the host. The human placenta, of crucial importancefor pregnancy success, and its main cells, the trophoblast, share several features withmalignant cells such as high cell proliferation rate, lack of cell-contact inhibition andinvasiveness. Both in cancer and in pregnancy, the immune defense mechanisms, potentially threatening the survival of the tumor or the fetus, are progressively blunted oreven turned into tumor- or pregnancy-promoting players. Amongst immune mechanisms that are meant to protect the host from cancer and can be apotential threat to the fetus, the NKG2D receptor-ligand system stands out as the mostpowerful, stress-inducible “danger detector” system that comprises the activating NK cellreceptor NKG2D and its ligands, the MIC (MHC class I Chain-related proteins A and B)and ULBP (UL-16 Binding Proteins) families. It is the major cytotoxic mechanism in thebody promoting surveillance and homeostasis. In the present thesis we investigate theNKG2D receptor-ligand system in human early normal pregnancy and in theleukemia/lymphoma cell lines Jurkat and Raji and ask the questions “How is the NKG2Dreceptor-ligand system functioning in pregnancy and tumor? How is the danger of cytotoxicattack of the fetus avoided? Why is the immunosurveillance function compromised incancer patients?” We developed a method to isolate and culture villous trophoblast from early human normalplacenta and used it to study the NKG2D receptor-ligand system. We discovered that theNKG2D ligand families of molecules MICA/B and ULBP1-5 are constitutively expressedby the syncytiotrophoblast of the chorionic villi. Using immnunoelectron microscopy, westudied the expression of these molecules at the subcellular level and could show for thefirst time that they are preferably expressed on microvesicles in multivesicular bodies(MVB) of the late endosomal compartment and are secreted as exosomes. Exosomes arenanometer sized microvesicles of endosomal origin, produced and secreted by a great7variety of normal and tumor cells. The exosomes are packages of proteins and ribonucleicacids that function as “mail” or “messengers” between cells conveying different biologicalinformation. We isolated and studied exosomes from placental explant cultures. We foundthat they carry NKG2D ligands on their surface and are able to bind and down-regulate thecognate receptor on NK-, CD8+ and <img src="http://www.diva-portal.org/cgi-bin/mimetex.cgi?%5Cgamma" /><img src="http://www.diva-portal.org/cgi-bin/mimetex.cgi?%5Cdelta" />T cells. The down-regulation selectively causedimpairment of the cytotoxic response of the cells but did not affect their lytic ability asmeasured by perforin content and gene transcription. Thus, the NKG2D ligand-bearingexosomes suppress the cytotoxic activity of the cells in the vicinity of the placenta, leavingtheir cytolytic machinery intact, ready to function when the cognate receptor isrestored/recycled. These findings highlight the role of placental exosomes in the fetalmaternalimmune escape and support the view of placenta as an unique immunomodulatoryorgan. Next, we studied the expression and exosomal release of NKG2D ligands by tumor cellsusing the leukemia cell lines Jurkat and Raji as a tumor model. We found that NKG2Dligand-bearing exosomes with similar immunosuppressive properties as placental exosomesare constitutively secreted by the tumor cells, as a mechanism to blunt the cytotoxicresponse of the immune cells and thus protect themselves from cytotoxic attack by the host.Interestingly, we found that thermal- and oxidative stress up-regulates the exosomesecretion and the amount of exosome-secreted NKG2D ligands. Our results imply thattumor therapies that cause stress-induced damage, such as thermotherapy and stripping ofoxygen supply to the tumor, might have a previously unrecognized side effect causingenhanced exosome production and secretion, which in turn suppresses the natural antitumorimmune response and thus should be taken into account when designing an optimaltherapy of cancer patients. In conclusion, we describe a novel stress-inducible mechanism shared by placenta andtumors as an immune escape strategy. We found that placenta- and tumor-derived NKG2Dligand-bearing exosomes can suppress immune responses to promote the survival and wellbeing of the fetus or the tumor. Our work comprises an important contribution to theelucidation of the NKG2D ligand-receptor system and its mode of operation in the humanbody and opens new perspectives for designing novel therapies for infertility and cancer.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Copper Phthalocyanine Deposited Mica Titania Pigment

Topuz, Burcu Berna 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In the present work, anatase and rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated lustrous mica pigments were prepared by heterogeneous nucleation method. Anatase-rutile phase transformation of the TiO2 on mica substrate was achieved by coating very thin layers of tin (IV) oxide on mica surfaces prior to TiO2 deposition. Muscovite mica, which was used in the experiments was sieved, pre-treated with sodium bicarbonate and decantated before coating process. The surface morphology of mica titania pigments and anatase-rutile phase transformation were investigated by SEM and XRD analyse, respectively. Also, microwave-assisted synthesis of copper phthalocyanine and tetracarboxamide copper phthalocyanine pigments were carried out with phthalic anhydride and trimellitic anhydride precursors, respectively. Molecular structures of these pigments were confirmed by FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy analyse. Furthermore, combination pigments were obtained by the process of deposition of copper phthalocyanine pigments on mica-titania pigment substrate in dimethyl formamide solvent. FT-IR analysis and XRD analyse were performed to observe the transformations in the crystal forms of copper phthalocyanines on the substrate. The surface morphologies of copper phthalocyanines on the mica titania pigments were investigated by SEM analysis. Varying amounts of copper phthalocyanines were deposited on the mica surfaces, and nitrogen elemental analysis was performed to determine the amount of copper phthalocyanines. The resulting pigments were incorporated into alkyd based resin to prepare paint samples. L*a*b* values, gloss property, and hardness of the paint samples were determined by color measuring device, gloss meter and hardness measuring device, respectively. The resulting combination pigments obtained in this study showed improved luster, hue, and color intensity. Furthermore, in literature it was reported that these pigments have very high bleed resistance. This can be attributed to large macromolecular structure of copper phthalocyanine on the surface of mica titania pigment that prevents bleeding of the pigment from the paint. Moreover, the paint samples obtained from combination pigments showed higher hardness with respect to the paint sample of the mica titania pigment.

Influence Of B2o3 Addition On The Microstructure Of Mica Based Glass - Ceramics

Aykut, Hakan 01 April 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Mica based glass - ceramics have been produced by subjecting the glasses in the SiO2 , Al2O3 , CaO , MgO, K2O , and F system to a controlled heat treatment called crystallization. TiO2 was added into the batch in the amount of 1 wt% of the glass as nucleating agent. B2O3 additions in the amounts of 1, 2, 4 and 8 wt% of the glass have been made in the batch to see and evaluate the effects of B2O3 additions on the texture of the mica glass ceramics. Crystallization was accomplished in two steps, nucleation and crystal growth. Nucleation temperature was 650 &amp / #61616 / C. Crystal growth temperatures were 850 and 1000 &amp / #61616 / C. The time for holding the specimens at the temperatures was 8 hours. The X-Ray diffraction analysis revealed that resultant glass ceramics possessed not only synthetic fluormica crystals called phlogopite which provide machinability, but also wollastonite crystals which provide biocompatibility. The scanning electron microscopy examinations have indicated that the amount and distribution of the crystalline phases varied as a function of B2O3 content and heat treatment schedule applied.

The present research aims to analyze the Regulatory Agencies within the framework of the Brazilian Regulatory State model, through the study of this new state structure's development, in the midst of the need to establish a new Economic Order. With the rise of the Regulatory State, the State takes on the role of intervener in the economy, revalorizing market forces, stimulating free initiative and free competition, supervising, planning, regulating and sanctioning economic agents, with the possibility of acting in the economic domain, assuming an agent role in the economy, guaranteeing the minimum subsistence conditions to the population. Amidst of the regulatory context, the State creates Regulatory Agencies,as autarchies with enhanced autonomy, aiming to carry out regulatory activities in the specific sectors to which they were destined. Thus, the general objective of this study is the regulatory agencies in the context of the Brazilian state model, the specific objectives are the analysis of the functions attributed to these entities, the impact of their actions in a broad context and in the specific sectors that are linked, the lack of need to limit its autonomy, to observe the interrelationship of the issue with consumer law, to analyze the possibility of creating the National Consumer Agency (ANC), to consider the limits and challenges of state action in the context of consumer relations, hampered by the expansion of e-commerce and the new profile of consumption. In order to carry out this study, the methodology used will be the inductive method, through indirect research, with the accomplishment of a bibliographical review of the doctrine and constitutional and infraconstitutional legislation, through the historical and comparative procedure. Since the understanding of the interrelationship with consumer law, it will be observed the possibility of applying Law No. 8.078/1990 (Consumer's Protection Code), seeking to generate greater security, protection, quality and efficiency of the provision of public services, either by the government or by the concessionaires and permission holders. When examining the institution of ANC as an alternative to balance the relationships between users and services providers, it was concluded that this is not the most viable way to deal with this necessity, being suggested as an alternative a greater inspection and sanctioning rigor by the existing agencies on the involved sectors, in conjunction with Bill No. 52/2013, which involves the creation of the General Law on Regulatory Agencies and Bill No. 281/2012, which introduces to the Consumer's Protection Code the protection in the scope of electronic commerce, which, finalized the procedures, will become safer, more prudent and effective alternatives to generate greater protection in the relations dealt here.

The big pelagic fish represents one of the most lucrative subjects of the industrial fisheries in Brazil. The Rio Grande do Norte by the privileged geographic position constitutes nowadays one of the regions in which the commercial oceanic fishing is more productive and tends to expand with new policies of governmental incentive.Different from other World?s producer regions that are researching the main exploited species, in Brazil the studies that objectify the population delimitation and to list data for the conservation of the species are scarce. Among the pelagic groups is common to observe a predominance of a minor diversity in relation to the abundance, this is a characteristic in two of the most important families of this oceanic region, Sphyraenidae (barracudas), Carangidae (jacks and pompanos) and Coryphaenidae (dolphinfish) and Istiophoridae (marlins). Data about these species are surrounded of logistics difficulties for its size, capture way and habitat which occupies. The first cytogenetical informations for some species of this family were obtained only recently. Here is presented a cytogenetical study with 9 pelagic fish species from the Atlantic, of the families Sphyraenidae, Carangidae, Corypahenidae, Istiophoridae and Megalopidae and 1 Indo-Pacific Carangidae. The results revealed numerical divergences and in the karyotipical macrostructure contrasting with the pattern considered basal for the Teleosts, besides the existence of masculine heterogamety, through a system of multiple sexual chromosomes of the kind X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y. Using techniques such as AgNORs, MM/DAPI it was possible to identify single ribosomal sites and showed cytotaxonomic markers for all. It was also applied more resolutive cytogenetic techniques based on multigenic sequences mapping through FISH (Fluorescence in situ Hybridization) enabled for the first time for some of these families to infer about the active karyoevolutive processes and evolutive aspects of the investigated species. Through the developed techniques it will be also possible to expand the knowledge about this important marine resource, subsidizing future policies of the management of stocks, as well as future support for the technological development of marine aquaculture.
