M.Com. (Industrial Psychology) / In conjunction with general previous experiences in the environment, the intrinsic self has an important influence on a career choice and a general career approach. The self-image which forms part of the personality and which on its part forms part of the intrinsic self, determines the pattern of a individual's general functioning in his environment. The study of the self-image ought to depict a persons psychological world of living. Vrey (1984, p.l0l) has found that a strong positive self-image is coupled with a greater need for and ability to greater success. A favourable self-actualisation is coupled to less fear and tension and can be associated with self-actualisation to a greater extent. Contradictions to mentioned statements are accentuated when specifically referring to the middle ages during which the once self-assured and selfaccepting manager is now characterised by a negative self-respect as well as a tendency towards self-rejection which leads to a radical change Ln behaviour. The negative self-image which a middle aged manager has of himself, is in most cases the result of changes in physical attraction, changes in role and life structure adjustments. This then is also the main reason for withdrawal from competition in the work situation. In this study the purpose is to determine whether middle aged managers with a positive self-image experience a greater degree of occupational adjustment than middle aged managers with a negative self-image. The sample consists of 132 males in the age group of 35 - 55 years who all occupy managerial positions within the same organisation. Vrey's (1974) self-concept questionnaire was used, as this measuring instrument was developed and standardised in South Africa. Comparable data is thus available. Based on the literature study, 24 items were formulated which will determine whether a person is occupationally adjusted or not.

Identity, intimacy, and marital satisfaction in midlife marriages

The purpose of this study was to examine the structure of the midlife marriage, focusing on identity, intimacy, and marital satisfaction. The investigator sought to identify the identity issues that midlife men and women are experiencing, describe the intimacy issues they face as couples, and show if/how these factors relate to marital satisfaction. Data were collected from a purposive sample of 48 midlife couples in the Roanoke Valley area. These couples were subgrouped into two categories: twenty-rive couples were classified as nonclinical couples (not in marital counseling at the present time) and twentythree were classified as clinical couples (currently in marital counseling). Information from the Waring Intimacy Questionnaire (WIQ) was used to analyze identity and intimacy issues and to examine factors that influenced marital satisfaction. Information from the Marital Satisfaction Scale was used to assess the level of marital satisfaction for both nonclinical and clinical couples. The results of the study indicated that (1) men and women who are in marital counseling are in the process of examining their identity issues. Women appear to be reassessing their roles as wives and mothers and are beginning to concentrate on their individuality. The issues for men were less clearly defined. They continued to view work as of central importance in their lives and did not seem to have made the transition from work to family as their main source of identity as Levinson, Darrow, Klein, Levinson, and McKee (1978) predicted. Based on WIQ scores and qualitative responses on the questionnaire, men in both the nonclinical and clinical subgroups, and women in the clinical subgroup did not feel they had an intimate relationship with their spouses. Contrary to the premises of this study, identity and intimacy were not the most significant factors affecting marital satisfaction for these midlife couples. The two factors that most determined their couples· level of marital satisfaction were social desirability and compatibility. / Ph. D.

An exploratory study of midlife transition in South Africa : in search of the midlife crisis

Strong opposing views exist with the popularly held notion that a midlife crisis is a normative phenomenon whilst a number of international researchers assert that the evidence shows the opposite to be true. It is nevertheless acknowledged that the psychology of midlife was one of the least researched areas internationally until the 1990s when certain aspects of midlife were investigated in the United States. Findings from these studies did not include the impact of a multiplicity of factors in combination at midlife. A new approach to the study of the life course using a combination model taking account of the influence of societal structures as well as the interplay between parts has been suggested. Such an approach to midlife transition and crisis research is not known to have taken place in South Africa or internationally. A conceptual model of midlife transition and crisis was constructed from known research and relevant literature and tested using a sample of 220 individuals aged between 30 and 65. The validity of the model was established and a methodologically sound measuring instrument was validated as a more accurate measurement of midlife crisis than a self-described experience. Two factors provisionally named stagnation and death and aging anxiety were found to exist. A true midlife crisis was experienced by a minority of individuals (IS percent) but an additional 31 percent had a troublesome but manageable experience. A neurotic disposition. the absence of good parental relationships, and the use of inappropriate coping skills such as wishful thinking were in combination related to high scores on the midlife crisis scales. A qualitative study revealed that over 90 percent of respondents were able to define a midlife crisis accurately although they tended to overstate the occurrence thereof. This replicates the research findings in the United States. Stagnation was experienced more acutely by individuals aged between 40 and 50 years whilst death and aging anxiety was the primary experience for those over 50 years. The validated conceptual model and measuring instruments can be used by therapists and coaches to facilitate the counselling or coaching process with clients experiencing midlife crisis. / Psychology / D.
