January 2014 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In the mid 20th century an expressive internal migration took place in Brazil, mostly from the Northeast of the country to the industrial capitals of the Southeast, but also to small new towns in the State of São Paulo. We examine here the narratives of this important but often overlooked migration as they are told by the migrating families that settled in Barbosa, a city that sprang from a late 19th century settlement located 300 miles from the cap ital. Through extensive field research and interviews with "Nordestinos" who migrated in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, their children and grandchildren, including the family of the researcher herself, we examine how migration narratives are transmitted between generations in what we are calling "places of memory": situations created by the migrating grandparents or inherited from Northeastern traditions in which the past in the place of origin is remembered, the migration itself is recalled and, above all, a certain way of being and acting is taught to the younger generation. Among the places of memory we identified are family gatherings around life cycle events; public gatherings where fathers and grandfathers publicly tell stories about characters collectively known; domestic spaces where mothers and grandmothers make sense of the family history; religious festivities such as "Festas Juninas" and "Terços" taking place in June and July; the fantastic realm of stories where mystic beings and animals relate to human beings; and, last but not least, the forms of media that supported memories and narratives in this strongly oral culture (such as photographs and wall portraits kept during the migration or sent back and forth by mail to relatives in the Northeast). In spite of the important role migration narratives and their attached teachings have for this community, we noticed that ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

The emergence of new ruralities has sparked the debate on theoretical and empirical instances that define the concept of rural. In this work, our analysis focuses on the differences that this phenomenon reverberates on the processes of redistribution of population, taking into consideration the Region Government of Jales, in the North West of the state of São Paulo. New rural spatiality has its historical roots in the processes triggered by the restructuring process of the 1980s. On the one hand, economic liberalization has forced the country to increase the production of exportable commodities in order to equilibrate our balance of payments. On the other hand, the increased competition has led to capitalist exploitation of small spatial differences related to the provision of work-force, infrastructure and various resources. These two characteristic tendencies of the new phase of capitalist accumulation have reinforced the heterogeneity of rural areas in the state of São Paulo, marking the existence of at least two types of very specific "rurals", with social, economic and demographic differences / Mestrado / Demografia / Mestra em Demografia

The impact of net migration rate on levels of living in United States SMSAs, 1970-1980

Deinhardt, Judith A. January 1983 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to analyze changes in selected social indicators through life and relate these changes to the population dynamics of SMSAs. The research examined the relationship between changes in levels of living in the 1970s and net migration rates. United States Census data on Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) were used in the analysis. The findings indicated that net migration rates were statistically related to variations in levels of living for SMSAs along with other demographic variables. Levels of living increased more in smaller SMSAs that had positive net migration rates and lower levels of living in 1970. / Master of Urban Affairs
