Thermal characteristics of grinding fluidsMassam, Mark January 2008 (has links)
High Efficiency Deep Grinding (HEDG) combines high depths of cut, high grinding wheel speeds with high work piece feed rates to deliver a very high stock removal process that can produce components free of surface damage. High contact temperatures are a characteristic of the process and this produces a mass of hot grinding sparks being ejected from the grinding zone. Neat oil cutting fluids are typically used in HEDG due to their excellent lubricity, but the high grinding wheel speeds employed leads to high levels of highly volatile cutting fluid mist in the machine canopy. This mist can mix with the hot grinding sparks being ejected from the grinding zone to create a potential fire hazard. The project aim was to produce a cutting fluid application strategy for the HEDG regime, focusing on establishing the thermal characteristics of cutting fluids in order to determine the optimum cutting fluid for the HEDG process. The cutting fluid application strategy also involved investigating the optimum means by which to apply the cutting fluid, based on minimising amount of cutting fluid used in the process and in reducing the potential fire hazard. The characteristics that have a thermal impact on the grinding process are the cooling, lubrication, ignition and misting properties of the fluid. A series of tests were established to investigate these properties and therefore allow different fluids to be compared and contrasted for their suitability for the HEDG regime based. Once an optimal cutting fluid had been established, the project then investigated the optimal method of applying this fluid, with particular reference to the type and design of the nozzle used to apply the fluid to the grinding zone. As part of these trials, a series of benchmark tests were also conducted using long established cutting fluid application techniques to enable the benefits of the new strategy to be evaluated. The project concluded that high viscosity neat oil ester based cutting fluids were the best fluids to be used in the HEDG regime due to they excellent lubricity and low misting properties coupled to their relatively high resistance to ignition when compared to neat mineral oils. The studies also found that using a high viscosity ester based fluid and then applying it using a coherent jet nozzle, significant reductions in the grinding powder and specific grinding energy could be achieved whilst significantly lowering the amount of mist in the machine, thus reducing the potential fire hazard and the volume of cutting fluid used by the process.

ring gap where the flow conditions are most severe. Flows of lubricant droplets were produced and characterised
in terms of the proportion of the oil flow that formed droplets in the gas flow and the size distribution of the droplets produced. Considering various aspects of a commercial automotive crankcase formulation, the effect of lubricant viscosity was found to be particularly important. High operation speeds and thin coating films are desirable in many industrial applications. But the quality of the product, which is primarily determined by an optimum process window, is affected by non-uniformities and instabilities originating at higher operation speeds.
Unlike other academic works, because of associated industrial relevance, particular attention was given towards the use of industrially relevant coating systems or generation of model fluids, which replicate the real coating solutions. One of the novelties of the research proposed lie in an integrated approach, utilising a range of comparative rheometrical techniques, with a focus on measurement of: (i) high strain rate shear viscosity [η], (ii) high strain rate uniaxial extensional viscosity [ηE] (iii) high strain rate elasticity (N1).
Deformable roll coating, in terms of classification, is the ultimate metered coating flow. The flow is controlled by the combination of hydrodynamic force and elastic deformation effect, which could be complicated by the presence of non-Newtonian fluid. This study necessitated the design and construction of a sophisticated deformable coating rig with the ability to operate over a wide range of conditions. Although the irregularities and instabilities associated with the roller coating process
has been studied previously, the concerned speeds of operation in this study is around three times higher.
The main objectives of this study was to carry out a comprehensive experimental programme establishing relationship exist between film thickness, film quality and operating parameters. Main identified operating parameters are roll speeds, roll gaps or applied load between the rolls, the elasticity with thickness of elastomeric layer and different rheological properties of the coating fluids. Magister Pharmaceuticae - MPharm / Dioxy MP 14 is a locally developed form of stabilized chlorine dioxide in an aqueous medium. It has all the sanitizing properties of chlorine dioxide gas, a neutral compound of chlorine in the +IV oxidation state, which has been used extensively as a non-toxic sterilizing agent with various applications. In this study, Dioxy MP14 was tested in a commercial chicken pen to determine its effectiveness as an environmental sanitizing agent. Control of environmental microbes in a chicken pen is important to ensure healthy birds and optimum egg production. The biocide was introduced via an overhead misting system with a variable dosing pump at various daily frequencies.The effectiveness of environmental microorganism control was determined with air settle plates. The health and performance of the chickens were evaluated and compared to chickens in a control pen.The results show a decrease in airborne microbial load in the treated pen. Better egg production and lower mortality of the chickens in the treated pen compared to the control pen, indicate effective environmental microbial control was achieved with a residual 7.46 ppm Dioxy MP 14 at a daily dose given for 5 minutes every 2 hours.This study was a pilot study, with encouraging results, for an extended study to investigate the feasibility of introducing Dioxy MP 14 through a misting system in a clinical environment (clinics and hospitals) to control airborne pathogens like Mycobacterium tuberculosis thereby reducing the infection risks for clinical workers and medical staff.
