Mother? A Portrait of Legal Motherhood in Canada

Tremblay, Régine 11 January 2011 (has links)
What characteristics make a legal mother? The thesis explores some of the gendered differences in establishing legal parentage. It defends that there is no adequate conception or definition of legal motherhood in Canada. Indeed, the conception of legal motherhood is elusive or reiterates the problematic association between biological motherhood and legal motherhood. The logical leap between a biological situation and a legal status creates two main problems. First, the elusiveness of motherhood as a legal category tends to strengthen gendered assumptions in legal parentage, and it is especially burdensome on women. Second, given the fact that no guidance is provided to decision makers, the vesting of motherhood is often subjected to an evaluation of a woman’s sexuality, sexual choices, or sexual preferences. There is a need a to put forward a comprehensive analysis of legal parentage; a gender and sexuality neutral concept of stratified legal parenthood.

The leaky pipeline of women in STEM: motherhood as a watershed for technical women

Stropes, Adrianne Marie 26 August 2010 (has links)
This research focuses on the experiences of technical (i.e. computer science, I/T and engineering) women. It starts with childhood and goes through professional, with the professional focus on motherhood as a potential conflict for women in technical fields. Results from an on-line study of India and U.S. are used for a comparative analysis. Many factors including demographic, burnout, enjoyment and family conflict are evaluated. Finally, the survey ended with a freeform section, which allowed respondents to share their thoughts on motherhood. Responses were varied but added great insight to the diverse views women hold. However, common themes still evolved, such as the role of the manager, spouse and the concept of motherhood. / text

Negotiating the Moral Politics of Transnational Motherhood: Conducting Ethnographic Research in Central America

Goldade, Kate R. January 2006 (has links)
In this narrative, the author reflects on the personal and ethical dilemmas she faces currently in the beginning stages of conducting dissertation research fieldwork, an aspect often glossed over by retrospective accounts. She is conducting ethnography of Nicaraguan labor migrant women working in Costa Rica's coffee agro-industry, with an emphasis on reproductive health and motherhood. In addition to her social position as a Western, advanced graduate student-researcher, Goldade is also a wife and mother, arriving in the field with her baby daughter just under 4 months of age. She grapples with the challenges of negotiating the moral politics of motherhood and ethnography, seeking collaboration among host country nationals and recruiting study participants, as well as the balancing act of working motherhood.

Mateřství a s ním spojená právní problematika / Maternity and related legal issues

Juhaňáková, Petra January 2012 (has links)
This Master's degree thesis Maternity and related legal issues consists of three extensive chapters analyzing current issues of maternity from the perspective of different branches of law. Despite the fact that the topic seems to be very simple, it contains many serious legal problems. Chapter One called General aspects of maternity protection in law has been dedicated to the basic terms of the family law, such as family and parenthood. Although it is not possible to find any definition of these terms, they certainly deserve the highest legal protection. The first part explains the basis of family, parenthood and maternity protection from the perspective of the legal order of the Czech Republic and from the perspective of international and European law. The next part deals with the protection of pregnant women in the national, international and European law, which may be regarded as a special expression of family protection. The following sections focus on parenthood, the importance of its determination in respect of law as well as on its far-reaching consequences. It is emphasized that motherhood and fatherhood constitute absolute-status legal relationships, which cannot be unilaterally given up. Such effects may be induced solely by the parental consent to adoption of a child. In light of the...
