PREDICTORS OF ACCULTURATIVE STRESS AMONG INTERNATIONAL MUSIC THERAPY STUDENTS IN THE U.S.

Kim, Seung-A January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to examine factors such as the number of years lived in the U.S., English proficiency, neuroticism, openness, and music therapy student academic stress (MTSAS) that predict acculturative stress among international music therapy students studying in the U.S. An on-line survey was conducted with a U.S. sample of international music therapy students. Among the 134 participants who originally came from 25 countries returned the survey, 97 with complete data (88 women and 9 men; 38 undergraduate and 59 graduate students) were included in the main analyses. Results showed this sample had a substantially higher mean on acculturative stress (M = 83.04) than the normative mean (M = 66.32) reported by Sandhu and Asrabadi (1994). In addition, 13 participants' (12.89%) scores were within the "high risk" category, indicating the need for psychological intervention. Asian students were found to have experienced a higher level of acculturative stress than their European counterparts. There were no significant differences found between undergraduate and graduate students relating to levels of acculturative stress. Correlational analyses indicated that acculturative stress had significant correlations with level of English proficiency, neuroticism, and MTSAS. There were no significant findings regarding years lived in the U.S., openness, and level of acculturative stress. Regression analyses revealed that (a) the entire set of 5 aforementioned predictors accounted for 41% of variance in acculturative stress, which is considered a large effect size, and (b) among these predictors, English proficiency, neuroticism, and MTSAS appeared to be the most powerful predictors of acculturative stress. In addition, making presentations, taking exams, and participating in class discussion were found to be the most stressful classroom activities. Implications for music therapy and future research directions are discussed. / Music Therapy

English second language learners: using music to enhance the listening abilities of grade ones

Horn, Catharina Aletta 28 February 2007 (has links)
Music is a form of language and uses tones and rhythm as its media of universal language. Language development and music development have many similarities. Both are communicative modes, aurally and orally transmitted, containing phonetic, syntactic, and semantic components, develop early in life and are socially interactive media. The researcher has noted the important role that music plays in the teaching of English as a second language. To be able to learn, understand and experience music and language, the learner should have well-developed listening skills. The aim of this research is to investigate the use of music and movement to develop the listening skills of the ESL learner. To provide activities to develop listening and concentration through music and movement, the researcher aims to prove that music and movement should be used to develop ESL learners' language. / Educational Studies / M. The viability of music as a viable subject at secondary school level

Jacobs, Gail Suzan 02 1900 (has links)
The study of music has long been seen as élitist in South African education, a ‘talent’ subject rather than an academic one. The country’s political history has played a significant role in this perception. Under the apartheid government, education in the arts was considered appropriate only for gifted, mostly white, students and a grossly inequitable distribution of resources placed the study of music beyond the reach of most students. The ANC government has declared educational reform a priority, but faces enormous challenges in redressing inequities of the past. This study examines the relevance and academic rigour of music curricula past and present, in the light of political influences; and the challenges that face schools and education departments in sustaining growth and development of music as an academic subject, accessible to all at senior secondary school level.

Weichselbaum, Anete Susana January 2013 (has links)
The present text investigates the musical-instrumental and musical-pedagogical skills and knowledge sets developed by students of a class denominated "The recorder flute in the school context". This class is offered by a graduate level institution during the second semester of the Music Teacher Education Program. The general aim of this research is to understand the modes through which students acquire, use and systematize the knowledge sets as well as the instrumental and pedagogical skills acquired, and which of these knowledges sets and abilities they value and select in order to address the pedagogical requirements and the necessary instrument skills in the aforementioned class. The specific goals proposed are related to: the collection of experiences (apprenticeship and teaching) of licenciates with the recorder; the acquisition, employment, valuing, selection and systematization of their knowledges sets and abilities; and the analysis of a teaching plan for the recorder. The methodological approach consists of a collaborative research group, in which the author participated as a research fellow and also as a teacher, in agreement with the main lecturer in this specific class, monitoring the students. Data gathering procedures included participative observation, interviews and collaborative meetings with the teacher and the students in the class as well as written registries, such as field notes and group assignment notebooks, along with audio and video materials. The theoretical reference is based on the teaching knowledges of teachers as proposed by Shulman (1986) in the field of education and adopted by Ballantyne (2005; 2006) in the training of music teachers. Of the seven types of knowledge listed by Shulman (1986), the author calls specific attention to knowledge of the subject content, curricular knowledge and pedagogical knowledge of the subject matter, which covers how to teach. In the field of music education, besides the knowledge sets, pedagogical, musical and instrumental abilities are also taken into consideration. The results of the present investigation point to the fact that comprehension of the knowledges sets and abilities adopted in this thesis is construed by academics in the second semester of the course, and notes that there is a variation between students and the tasks required. Three categories related to knowledge of the content in activities proposed inside the classroom where identified and analyzed, and musical abilities and knowledges of licenciates where listed, such as the realization of instrumental accompaniments and the preference for "playing by ear". The institutional demands of the interviewed licenciates that already teach require of these, besides the pedagogical knowledge and abilities of the content itself and the curricular subject matters, professional knowledge and abilities related to the goals, principles and values of education. These individuals highlighted that planning was made possible based on their comprehension of the process experienced during the school semester, taking into account class sequence, their activities and the reflections gleaned from these. The teaching plans of the students that already teach put into evidence the curricular and professional knowledge and abilities of these students.

Musical linguistics: How music and artistic creativity when delivered as a linguistic practice, help students master academic skills in English language arts

Lebo, Cynthyny Ann 01 April 2012 (has links)
This Masters project consists of two elements: 1) an integrated after-school program to improve student English language reading and academic outcomes for third graders' vocabulary development by incorporating music, artistic creativity and linguistics; 2) a pilot sample curriculum that demonstrates the approach for building student comprehension through musical theater and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) content experiences. Called "Water Buddy", this is an after-school program uses singing, dancing, writing, and play to build reading and vocabulary skills. The goal is to improve learner academic outcomes by mastering the elemental building blocks of words, letters, symbols by making memorable the sound units, idioms, print conventions, and concepts that they were previously lacking.

Sjunkande kunskaper i musikteori? : A study of the prevalence of music theory instruction among Swedish music and culture schools

Forsén, Lotta January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a connection between the diminishing knowledge of music theory of applicants to colleges of music, and the offering of music theory in the Swedish music and culture schools. In order to reach this goal, I conducted a survey of the prevalence of music theory among the Swedish music and culture schools, and how this is organized. I have used a questionnaire in which the principal or the teacher of music theory has responded to, and I have examined the entrance examinations (C-test) in basic theoretical knowledge and harmony from different years at The Music Academy of Ingesund. Survey responses indicate that a third of those who answered, offer music theory as its own subject. These schools can be found in both large and small municipalities, with a varied number of students. Music theory does not seem to have decreased significantly over the past nine years. Among the schools that do not offer music theory, the main reason given for this is a poor economy. But among schools who offered music theory but were forced to discontinue, the main reason given were the students' lack of interest. I have also investigated the structure of the lesson, certified teachers, integration of music theory in instrumental lessons and the marketing of the subject. In the section where I discuss the results, an explanation may be found as to why there appears to be a declining knowledge of music theory. The responses indicate that while music theory is still generally offered as before, there is a reduction in demand, which may cause the knowledge level to decrease.

Instrumentdöden - vem bryr sig? : udda instruments förutsättningar i musik- och kulturskolan

Martinsson, Helena January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the study was to find out how working conditions in different music schools and schools of arts are, or has been, for teachers on oboe and bassoon, and how the conditions may affect the regrowth of these instruments. The interviews were performed with teachers on bassoon and oboe; two active teachers and one former teacher. Experience shows that it can be difficult to recruit these instruments to orchestra courses for young people. An assumption was made in the study that the conditions for these instruments in the schools of music and arts are not the best, which was indicative of the survey. The results of the study show that the interviewed teachers on these instruments struggle with a whole series of problems such as poor facilities, too short teaching time, few students that require many hourly based employments and many time consuming journeys. It also shows that adaption has occurred to different conditions on different schools where also the recruiting of students works differently. The problem can be traced to scarce financial resources, absence of a national structure for music development or principals with indifference, ignorance or lack of mandate from the politics to take responsibility for a good qualitative development that leads to diversity and a vibrant music scene.
