Reading Alice Dunbar-Nelson Through the Eyes of a Creole

Abstract Over the last fifty years scholars have worked to recover the work of late nineteenth, early twentieth-century writer Alice Dunbar-Nelson. Many scholars have acknowledged the impact of New Orleans culture and history in her writing as well as attempted peel back the layers of her stories in order to understand her commentary on structures of race, class, and gender in nineteenth-century New Orleans. This hybrid paper, both creative and academic, subjective and objective, is a reading of her work through the Creole lens. Reading Alice Dunbar-Nelson through a Creole lens illuminates the radical nature of her work which has not always been seen through alternative lenses. This paper is a viewing of the work of Dunbar-Nelson from the marginal space which it illustrates and from which it comes. Through personal narrative and analytical thought this paper explores a different approach to literary criticism.

Las Reglas Mandela y su reconocimiento normativo en el derecho nacional

Memoria (licenciado en ciencias jurídicas y sociales) / Desde su creación y adopción en el año 1955, las Reglas Mínimas para el Tratamiento de los Reclusos fueron reconocidas como la base para la elaboración de políticas penitenciarias en el tratamiento de las personas privadas de libertad. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo y producto del desarrollo en el ámbito legislativo internacional en lo que al tratamiento del recluso se refiere, se hizo necesaria su actualización. Se inició así un proceso de discusión y revisión de las diversas materias que regulaba, concluyendo tal labor en el año 2015 con la adopción de las Reglas Mínimas de las Naciones Unidas para el Tratamiento de los Reclusos o Reglas Nelson Mandela, a modo de homenaje al difunto presidente de Sudáfrica. Constatando en el ámbito nacional las precarias condiciones carcelarias, se hace necesario efectuar un análisis de las Reglas Mandela, dando cuenta de sus fundamentos y principios, así como aquellas materias que fueron modificadas para adecuarse a los nuevos tiempos. En el mismo sentido, la presente memoria se refiere a las principales normas nacionales que se encargan de regular la gestión de los recintos penitenciarios y los derechos y garantías de los reclusos, con énfasis en el Reglamento de Establecimientos Penitenciarios, a fin de determinar si éstas incorporan elementos de tales Reglas.

Essays on Modelling and Forecasting Financial Time Series

This thesis is composed of three chapters which propose some novel approaches to model and forecast financial time series. The first chapter focuses on high frequency financial returns and proposes a quantile regression approach to model their intraday seasonality and dynamics. The second chapter deals with the problem of forecasting the yield curve including large datasets of macroeconomics information. While the last chapter addresses the issue of modelling the term structure of interest rates. The first chapter investigates the distribution of high frequency financial returns, with special emphasis on the intraday seasonality. Using quantile regression, I show the expansions and shrinks of the probability law through the day for three years of 15 minutes sampled stock returns. Returns are more dispersed and less concentrated around the median at the hours near the opening and closing. I provide intraday value at risk assessments and I show how it adapts to changes of dispersion over the day. The tests performed on the out-of-sample forecasts of the value at risk show that the model is able to provide good risk assessments and to outperform standard Gaussian and Student’s t GARCH models. The second chapter shows that macroeconomic indicators are helpful in forecasting the yield curve. I incorporate a large number of macroeconomic predictors within the Nelson and Siegel (1987) model for the yield curve, which can be cast in a common factor model representation. Rather than including macroeconomic variables as additional factors, I use them to extract the Nelson and Siegel factors. Estimation is performed by EM algorithm and Kalman filter using a data set composed by 17 yields and 118 macro variables. Results show that incorporating large macroeconomic information improves the accuracy of out-of-sample yield forecasts at medium and long horizons. The third chapter statistically tests whether the Nelson and Siegel (1987) yield curve model is arbitrage-free. Theoretically, the Nelson-Siegel model does not ensure the absence of arbitrage opportunities. Still, central banks and public wealth managers rely heavily on it. Using a non-parametric resampling technique and zero-coupon yield curve data from the US market, I find that the no-arbitrage parameters are not statistically different from those obtained from the Nelson and Siegel model, at a 95 percent confidence level. I therefore conclude that the Nelson and Siegel yield curve model is compatible with arbitrage-freeness.

Cette crise prend la forme d'un doute : peut-on analyser l'art en un temps où sa définition est elle-même problématique ? Exemplaire, la figure de Malévitch porte en elle-même les signes de contradictions de son époque et celles-ci sont à l'origine de plusieurs phases de crise qui se manifestent encore de nos jours. <br />Malévitch, un des premiers, a supposé des cadres conceptuels pour comprendre un " langage de l'art " (" l'élément additionnel ", 1927). Un cadre matériel se transforme ainsi en un cadre conceptuel, le cadre de référence (" frame of reference ") chez Nelson Goodman. Sa théorie (" Langages de l'art ", 1968) est ici considérée comme celle du cadre modelant. La crise du cadre dans l'art ramène au moteur de la création. The project of this thesis has been to examine the results of the development of the reputation and concept of the historical figure of Horatio Nelson as symbol of masculinity from nearly the beginning of the myth-making and mythologizing in the nineteenth century to the present. There have been several studies recently that examine Nelson the myth, Nelson as legend, Nelson as hero: they study the process of the development of this character. As a result of the mythologizing the history of Horatio Nelson is likely lost. However the memory of Nelson a very different thing and the focus of this thesis has been reinforced through commemoration throughout the two centuries since his death coming to a logical conclusion in 2008. This was done in both the public sphere (in the form of monuments) and in the private sphere (Nelson was merchandised) with the logical result in the first part of the twenty-first century being a manifestation of Nelson in fan culture on the internet. He has now been essentialised, extrapolated, and used in a wide variety of ways to navigate masculinity by both genders.

Can Relative Yield Curves Predict Exchange Rate Movements? Example From Turkish Financial Market

Exchange rate forecasting is hard issue for most of floating exchange rate economies. Studying exchange rate is very attractive matter since almost no model could beat random walk in short run yet. Relative yields and information in relative yield curves are contemporary topics in empirical literature and this study follows Chen and Tsang (2009) who model exchange rate changes with relative factors obtained from Nelson-Siegel (1987) yield curve model and find that relative factor model can forecast exchange rate change up to 2 years and perform better than random walk in short run. Analysis follows the methodology defined by Chen and Tsang (2009) and TL/USD, TL/EUR exchange rate changes are modeled by the relative factors namely relative level, relative slope and relative curvature. Basically, 162 weekly datasets from 09.01.2007 to 16.03.2010 are used and the relative factors for each week are estimated. Afterwards, regression analysis is made and results show that relative level and relative curvature factors are significant up to 4-6 weeks horizon but relative slope does not provide any valuable information for exchange rate prediction in Turkish financial market. Length of forecasting horizon of relative factor model is too short when compared to other exchange rate models. Since it is accepted that exchange rates follow random walk, we provided some tests to compare performance of the model. Similar to the literature, only short run performance of relative factor model is compared to random walk model and concluded that the relative factor model does not provide better forecasting performance in Turkish financial market

When consultation becomes a checkbox, what’s the fracking point?: Colonial constraints on social learning processes in Northeast BC and the Fort Nelson First Nation’s New Approach to resource governance

This Master’s thesis seeks to develop a better understanding of how Indigenous voices can be included in water governance. As a starting point, social learning theory, collaborative governance and Indigenous and Canadian relations were carefully studied. Despite the large body of research on collaborative governance with First Nations and on social learning in water governance, little is known specifically about social learning processes in colonial contexts. Using grounded theory and Indigenous methodologies, this research investigates how the current approach to implementing the Province’s legal constitutional, “duty to consult” affects social learning processes and the inclusion of Indigenous people in water governance. Findings indicate that the laws and policies that have been created based on the Crown’s interpretation of Treaty 8, an agreement signed between the Fort Nelson First Nation and Canada in 1899. This duty to consult constrains social learning, as it does not allow for the flexibility needed for a reframing process that might bring the actors to a common understanding of Treaty 8, the treaty relationship and its application as such today, as a basis for future collaboration. Without reframing processes, the consultation process is perceived by the Fort Nelson First Nation, a Treaty 8 nation, to lack legitimacy and neutral facilitation. Subsequently, consultation is seen as a checkbox that must be completed, but fails to include First Nations’ knowledge, interests and concerns about impacts from development and appropriate accommodation. This research also investigates a new governance arrangement emerging in northeast BC, which changes the way Fort Nelson First Nation voices are included in decision-making. Processes of nation building and capacity building contribute to Fort Nelson First Nation’s New Approach to governance. The New Approach sees changes to the sites of authority, revenue and norms and beliefs, resulting in a governance innovation that circumvents the provincial government’s role in governance by creating a closer working relationship between industry and the Fort Nelson First Nation. The results are development planning and decisions that better reflect the Fort Nelson First Nation’s concerns and interests in the near future. / Graduate

This study explores problem-based learning (PBL) as a form of pedagogy, and its interrelationships with the students, staff members and institution of the Medical Faculty at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Little has been written previously about the interaction of student diversity and resource-constrained circumstances with PBL. I investigate perceptions and experiences of PBL as a pedagogic strategy, using Bernstein's theories of classification and framing as an organising framework. I draw also on his writings on discourses and knowledge structures and the pedagogic device. Within an interpretive methodology, I use three methods to generate data. I analyse numerically the test marks of a cohort of 202 students over three years for demographic influences on pedagogic engagement. I explore in semi-structured interviews the perceptions and experiences of PBL of 19 students and 6 staff members, and relate these to Faculty documents; I analyse these sources thematically in order to describe the roles of student, teacher and institution. These perceptions and experiences I then examine according to the eight elements of Bernstein's classification and framing. A number of contradictions emerge: between PBL theory, echoed by Faculty documents on one hand, and staff/student perceptions and experiences on the other; between staff members and students at some points but not at others; between high-achieving and low-achieving students; between different respondents' under-standings of "integration". Some demographic characteristics prove on analysis to be highly significant influences while others, counter-intuitively, are not. Bernstein's theories about knowledge structures are pertinent to the tensions revealed. Medicine has thought of itself as akin to the pure sciences – implying a hierarchical structure in which all knowledge aggregates towards a point of abstraction. However, the structure and function revealed by respondents suggests a horizontal knowledge structure, in which disciplinary knowledge is kept distinct. Students and teachers thus struggle to integrate areas of knowledge that are inherently discrete. In terms of Bernstein's "pedagogic device", some students are able to discern PBL's implicit rules of engagement, while others are not. Consensus on medicine‟s knowledge structure might settle ambiguities and help PBL achieve its potential as a complex pedagogy in a complex field. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2012.
