Exploring Circularity in the Swedish Beverage Industry : A Narrative and Content Analysis of Circular Practices and Trajectories / Utforska Cirkularitet I den Svenska Dryckesindustrin : En Narrativ och Innehållsanalys av Cirkulära Metoder och Framtidsutsikter

The beverage industry plays a pivotal role in global environmental impact, necessitating an urgent transformation from its current linear economy model of extract-produce-use-dispose. The evidence of environmental disasters has highlighted the unsustainable nature of this model and the pressing need for change. Consequently, the industry is exploring how to contribute to a more sustainable future. Here, the circular economy (CE) has emerged as a strategic tool to promote more sustainable resource utilization and mitigate environmental impacts. The aim of the research was to identify the prevailing discourse and expectations around CE at the microlevel in the Swedish beverage industry across the whole value chain as well as map the trajectories outlined for circularity within this sector. A content analysis of 121 Swedish magazines and media articles from the past six years was conducted, along with a narrative analysis. The study reveals active engagement in CE practices across several stakeholder groups, primarily led by processing companies. These initiatives align with the waste hierarchy, with recycling and re-use of plastics, food waste and by-products being the most prevalent. The beverage industry’s stakeholders anticipate CE efforts to contribute to environmental and economic benefits as well as compliance with legal requirements and a change in consumer behavior. The findings led to three narratives being formed: "Rethinking Plastics: Transforming Plastic Use in the Swedish Beverage Industry", "From Waste to Taste: Rescuing Resources in the Swedish Beverage Industry", and "From Sustainability to Profitability: Unveiling the Economic Potential of CE Ventures in the Swedish Beverage Industry". / Dryckesindustrin spelar en central roll för den globala miljöpåverkan, vilket kräver en omfattande omställning från den nuvarande linjära ekonomimodellen som omfattas av ”slit-och-släng”. Miljökatastroferna har visat att denna modell är ohållbar och att det finns ett akut behov av förändring. Följaktligen undersöker industrin hur man kan bidra till en mer hållbar framtid. Här har den cirkulära ekonomin (CE) vuxit fram som ett strategiskt verktyg för att främja ett mer hållbart resursutnyttjande och minska miljöpåverkan. Syftet med studien var att identifiera den rådande diskursen och förväntningarna kring CE på mikronivå i den svenska dryckesindustrin över hela värdekedjan samt kartlägga de banor som beskrivs för cirkuläritet inom denna sektor. En innehållsanalys av 121 svenska tidskrifter och medieartiklar från de senaste fem åren har genomförts, tillsammans med en narrativ analys. Studien påvisar ett aktivt engagemang för CE-metoder inom flera intressentgrupper, främst drivet av förädlingsföretag. Dessa initiativ är i linje med avfallshierarkin, med återvinning och återanvändning av plast, matavfall och biprodukter som de mest förekommande. Aktörer inom dryckesindustrin förväntar sig att CE-insatserna ska bidra till miljömässiga och ekonomiska fördelar samt efterlevnad av lagkrav och ett förändrat konsumentbeteende. [pt] Sendo um pai por adoção e um entusiasta do assunto (Moreira, 2020; Pires; Sales, 2020; Costa e Rosetti Ferreira, 2007; Dias et al, 2005), resolvi, nesta pesquisa, trazer à tona duas vertentes importantes a respeito dessa temática: a adoção de crianças mais velhas e de adolescentes (Vargas, 1998; Jubé, 2018; Souza, 2012) e a adoção inter-racial (Espíndola, 2020). Desde que comecei minhas leituras a respeito dos pressupostos teóricos da Linguística Aplicada Crítica e do seu interesse em se debruçar sobre os fenômenos da vida social (Moita Lopes, 2006), passei a procurar diálogos entre meu tema e essa área de pesquisa a fim de – através de experiências vividas pela minha família e por mais duas famílias amigas – começar a dar corpo a meu trabalho. Assim, esta tese tem por entender que emoções emergem em narrativas dos pais de crianças mais velhas e de adolescentes negros adotados e que significam certas experiências de vida enquanto situações de racismo. Além disso, busquei analisar as (co)construções dessas emoções como processos avaliativos (Cortazi; Jim, 2001; Nóbrega, 2009) que podem ocorrer nas narrativas para o entendimento e para a reflexão crítica acerca do racismo, investigando como esses pais lidam com os estigmas (Goffman, 2004) com que a sociedade marca seus filhos e refletindo sobre sua posição como pessoas que fazem parte de uma sociedade racista e como detentores dos privilégios advindos da branquitude (Bento, 2002; Schucman, 2012). Alinhado ao paradigma qualitativo de pesquisa (Denzin; Lincoln, 2006) e à pesquisa do praticante (Allwright, 2005), resolvi, ainda, realizar a análise a partir da metodologia de três lâminas de observação (Biar et al.2021), em que observo primeiro a estrutura narrativa; em seguida, o momento em que se narra e, por isso, a interação e a coconstrução (ou não) de sentidos realizadas entre mim e meus parceiros de pesquisa; e por último, os embates discursivos, ou seja, como nossos discursos corroboram ou não outros discursos disseminados em sociedade. Com isso, pude identificar algumas emoções negativas como de insatisfação e de incapacidade por parte dos pais que participaram desta tese acerca não só do racismo sofrido por seus filhos, mas também quando identificaram o quanto essa prática ainda existe neles. A partir de tais entendimentos construídos colaborativamente, vislumbro a possibilidade desta tese ter tido um efeito catalisador pelo qual os praticantes envolvidos e outros praticantes possam repensar seus sentimentos e práticas a respeito do antirracismo com vistas à revisão de seus comportamentos tanto em família, diante dos filhos que adotaram, quanto em sociedade. / [en] As an adoptive father and an enthusiast of this subject (Moreira, 2020; Pires; Sales, 2020; Costa and Rosetti Ferreira, 2007; Dias et al, 2005), I decided, in this research, to bring to light two important aspects regarding this context: the adoption of older children and adolescents (Vargas, 1998; Jubé, 2018; Souza, 2012) and the interracial adoption (Espíndola, 2020). Since I began reading about the theoretical assumptions of Applied Linguistics and about its interest in looking into the phenomena of social life (Moita Lopes, 2006), I started looking for conncetions between my theme and this area of research in order to – through experiences lived by my family and by two other close families – construct my work. Thus, this thesis has the general objective of understanding, through the promotion of exploratory conversations (Moraes Bezerra, 2007; Nunes, 2017), the emotions (Barcelos, 2013; Maturana, 2001; Zembylas, 2014) that emerge in the narratives of white parents of black older children and adolescents about situations of racism that their children go through or have been through. Furthermore, I chose to analyze the (co)constructions of these emotions as evaluative processes (Cortazi; Jim, 2001; Nóbrega, 2009) that can appear in narratives to generate understandings and critical reflections about racism, investigating how these parents deal with the stigmas (Goffman, 2004) their children suffer and reflecting about their position as people who are part of a racist society and as holders of privileges from whiteness (Bento, 2002; Schucman, 2012). Aligned with the qualitative research paradigm (Denzin; Lincoln, 2006) and with practitioner research (Allwright, 2005), I also decided to carry out the analysis using the three-layer observation methodology (Biar et al.,2021), in which I first observe the narrative structure; then, the moment of narration, the interaction and the co-construction (or not) of meanings produced by me and my research collaborators; and finally the discursive clashes, that is, how our discourses corroborate or not other discourses disseminated in society. In doing so, I was able to identify some negative emotions such as dissatisfaction and incapacity by the parents who participated in this thesis regarding not only the racism suffered by their children but also the moments when they identified the extent to which this practice still exists in them. Based on such collaboratively constructed understandings, I envisage the possibility of this thesis having had a catalytic effect through which the practitioners involved and other practitioners come to rethink their feelings and practices regarding anti-racism to review their behavior both within the family and towards their adopted children, as well as in society at large.

[pt] Partindo de relatos de parto de mulheres brasileiras circunscritas em diferentes realidades sociais, o presente trabalho, de cunho qualitativo e interpretativista tem como objetivo analisar a construção e os efeitos dos discursos hegemônicos (Foucault, 1988) em falas sobre experiências de gestação e parto. Observaremos em performances narrativas emergentes em dez entrevistas de pesquisa (offline e online), a construção da agentividade das narradoras em conexão com as relações corpo/afeto. Narrativas de mulheres de lugares socias diversos (diferentes raças, classes, sexualidades, faixas etárias, usuárias de organizações de saúde públicas e privadas) serão analisadas sob uma lente interseccional de gênero, raça e classe, focalizando como tais narrativas constroem inteligibilidades que regem a vida social e, assim, cerceiam corpos – o que induz à reflexão sobre a soberania do discurso médico hegemônico e seus impactos na experiência da maternidade. Nossa compreensão de gênero se pauta em feminismos matricêntricos – se propondo, assim, a dar centralidade a mulheres mães sob uma perspectiva interseccional. Sob a perspectiva interdisciplinar, indisciplinar e mestiça da Linguística Aplicada Contemporânea (Moita Lopes, 2006), alinhamo-nos à Análise de Narrativa por entendermos que, contando histórias, construímos a nós mesmos, nossa percepção de identidade, além de construirmos o mundo ao redor. A análise das narrativas examina a construção da avaliação – componente narrativo que imprime dramaticidade e razão de ser ao que se narra, contemplando a dimensão discursiva dos afetos. Dessa forma, foi possível observar, no âmbito das inter-relações entre cultura–discurso–corpo–afeto, como os atravessamentos discursivos deixam marcas: seja reprimindo, constrangendo e destituindo as mães da gestão de sua própria corporeidade; seja, por outro lado, instando autonomia e agentividade às mães em seus relatos. Assim, compreender os rastros discursivos pela via dos afetos possibilita ao analista interpretar, reelaborar e redimensionar a experiência vivida. / [en] The aim of this qualitative-interpretive study is to analyse the construction and effects of normative discourses) regarding pregnancy and birth by analysing labour narratives of Brazilian mothers located in distinct social contexts. In the narrative performances that emerge from three research interviews (conducted both on and offline), we observe how speakers build agency in relation to body/affect. The narratives of these women - from diverse social backgrounds (in terms of race, class, age, private/public health system users) - are analysed focusing on how these stories build intelligibility that governs social life and which can curtail bodies – leading us to reflect on the pervasiveness of medical discourse and its impacts on the experience of mothering and maternity. Our understanding of gender is based on matricentric feminisms and aims at furthering mothers visibility from an intersectional perspective. As part of an emerging tradition of undisciplined, Contemporary Applied Linguistics of Latin America, this study draws on Narrative Analysis, aiming at the further understanding of locally constructed identities and their relationship with the surrounding world. Our analysis examines the building of evaluation - a narrative component which heightens drama, conveying the story s very raison d être - as to consider the discursive dimension of affect. Our examination of the relationship between culture, discourse, body and affect, enables us to identify the way these insidious discourses leave their mark on mothers; either through reprimands, constraints and the erasure of control over their own corporeality or otherwise by prompting autonomy and agency. Medical discourse, as we observe, is a powerful institution which serves as underlying other major overwhelming discourses, such as the patriarchal and the racist. Thus, by building the bridges between the micro and macro dimensions it is possible to realise that what happens in social interactions reveals a lot from a complex broader scenario as much as the major institutions have a great impact on social life. The observation of the discursive scars left makes way to analyse, interpret, rework and reimagine the lived experience of labour.

A participatory inquiry into cultural and religious discourses that either silence or promote gay voices

This study is an inquiry into discourses which influence gay people's lives. Foucault's ideas regarding knowledge, power, discipline, discourse and sexuality form the epistemological background enabling a social constructivist-deconstructive analysis of these concepts in relation to the problem of homosexuality. The theological origins of influential discourses form the focus of one chapter. Additional discursive fields - such as psychology, education, the military and legislature - are also investigated. Besides the research initiator, three other participants shared their experiences of being gay in a conservative religious context. The narrative analysis spawned five themes of discourse ranging from homophobic discourses - which invite oppression into silence - through reverse-discourse, to those discourses which encourage free expression of gayness. The study seems to support a Foucauldian view that there are various influential power-relations which contest for the right to define human sexuality. Narratives of pregnant teenagers about reproductive health care services in a clinic in Gauteng Province

Teenage pregnancy is an ever increasing dilemma in South Africa. Dealing effectively with pregnant teenagers is a continuous challenge for the health care providers particularly the nursing staff. The present study focuses on the reproductive health care services in a Gauteng province clinic and pregnant teenagers' experiences of their interaction with the nursing staff. Six pregnant teenagers were included in the study. Data consistied of the participants' narratives regarding the health care services provided by the nursing staff. Themes from the narratives were identified and explored according to a Social Constructionism stance within the Postmodernist paradigm. Factors found to affect the experiences of the pregnant teenagers included acceptance, respect, effective communication, privacy, trust and the dedication and professionalism of the nursing staff. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

This is a candidate’s thesis for the programme for Social Workers at the Linneaus University in Växjö. This study has the purpose to understand what protective-factors that may be important for children who grow up in a risk environment. This has been done through reading autobiographies written by adults who have been born and raised in destructive environments. The data has been collected with the use of a narrative analysis. The result has then been viewed and analyzed with the help of attachment-theory, a salutogene perspective and with ecological systems theory. The results from this candidate’s thesis shows that we have been able to identify protective factors in three major categories; Individual attributes, relationships and factors that exists outside of the family environment. These factors have been analyzed and explained through the perspective of attachment-theory, a salutogene perspective and with ecological systems theory. Our findings suggest that there exists several important relationships between our result, the previous research and what the theories suggest is important for children as protective factors. They are: basic need of security, need of development and understanding and finally an importance in the needs for children to have a sense of coherence.

Protest eller bara nagellack: : En narrativ analys av rapporteringen kring Emma Green Tregaros protest under friidrotts-VM i Moskva 2013.

Several discussions rose in western media when Swedish high-jumper Emma Green Tregaro competed with her nails painted in the colors of the rainbow during the athletic world championship in Moscow, in August 2013. This was meant to show her support for the gay movement, but was viewed as a protest against the new Russian law which forbids gay propaganda.  Western media critizised Russian media for failing to report the incident to their readers and that is where we got interested in making this research. We got the idea of comparing a Swedish newspaper with a Russian one, to observe differences in how they chose to report the event.  Due to lack of knowledge of the Russian language and the kyrillic alphabet we had to turn to an English-speaking newspaper based in Russia: The Moscow Times.  We compared the Moscow Times with the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, to see their differences in terms of: How they chose to cover the event, from a gender perspective; what structures of power can be found, how Emma Green Tregaro and Yelena Isinbayeva are portrayed and what meaning the protest is given by the narrators. We achieved our results through narrative analysis, a qualitative method. We applied theories such as gender theory and media logic in order to obtain answers to our questions.   We came to the conclusion that there are great differences in how much attention the protest achieved in the two newspapers. From the Swedish perspective, more focus were put on Emma Green Tregaro where she is a brave messenger of love, while in the Russian, more emphasis lays on Yelena Isinbayeva as a defender of the Russian stance. While Dagens Nyheter has put resources into sending journalists to Moscow, The Moscow Times has used a lot of material from news bureaus such as Reuters and The Associated Press instead of covering the event themselves.  Another interesting fact is that the institutions presented in the news flow such as the IAAF, IOC and the Swedish Sports Confederation are only represented by men, and through the power structural dimension of gender theory we can see tendencies of control or influence over the female sports profiles’ actions.

"We Don't Want the Loonies Taking Over": Examining Masculine Performatives by Private Security in a Hospital Setting

After sixteen intensive months, I quit my employed position as a security guard at a local hospital. By drawing on my autoethnographic experiences in the form of “ethnographic fiction writing”, as well as eight interviews with my former male colleagues, I explore how the guards’ constructions of masculinity intersect with their security assessment and subsequent application of force, chemical incarceration, and other coercive security tactics on involuntarily-committed mental health patients. The narratives are framed by the available literature on gender and masculinity within the security, police, prison and military institutions, as well as the theoretical notions of gendered institutions (Acker), hegemonic masculinity (Connell & Messerschmidt), doing gender (West & Zimmerman), and Dave Holmes’s application of Foucauldian biopolitical power to forensic healthcare settings. These concepts are used in tandem with a creative methodological tool to reveal the “messy”, “bloody” and “gendered” ways in which hospital life unfolds between the guard, the nurse, and the patient prisoner. By escaping more traditional forms of academic writing, I am able to weave raw, sensitive and reflexive thoughts and emotions into the research design and analysis. The analysis is divided into two narratives: “Us” and “Them”. “Us” emphasizes the gendered ways in which the hospital guard learns, reproduces, resists, lives up, or fails to live up to the masculine codes of the profession. Here, the guard must confront cultural demands to demonstrate physical prowess, authority and heroism during a patient battle. “Them” explores how hegemonic masculinity shapes the hierarchical and coercive relations between the guard, the nurse, and the patient, and reinforces psychiatrized discourses that promote punishment, pain, bureaucracy and control. Overall, these findings call for the abolition of physical restraint, chemical incarceration and other coercive security measures within our healthcare institutions, and encourage future research to give voice to the lived experiences of women guards and security management teams.

Written in scars : stories of recovery from self harm

This study sought to hear the narratives of individuals that have recovered from self-harming, with the intention of bearing witness to both the narratives and remaining scars in order to better understand and inform clinical practice. A purposive sample of seven individuals was recruited. Participants were asked to photograph their scars and bring them to an interview. Narratives were generated and explored through a relatively unstructured individual interview. Both the images and narratives were analysed using a narrative approach exploring content, performance and structural aspects, emphasising researcher reflexivity throughout. Findings were understood through psychoanalytic theory and highlighted a theme of validation and ‘being seen’, evidenced in stories of past invalidation that had been internalised into the self-structure and defended against by presenting a ‘defended’ self. Self-harm enabled this ‘unseen self’ to be expressed, validated and contained. Recovery was storied in terms of internalising experiences of validation, which enabled integration of the invalidated parts of the self. Many of the participants highlighted how their scars told a story of discovery; of becoming, coping and surviving. In the healing of scars this recovery is evident, but they may also continue to convey the unseen and unspoken experiences of pain, incoherence and invalidation. Self-harm and remaining scars may be understood as connecting, containing and re-embodying the internalised invalidation and ‘unseen’ aspects of the self. These findings are discussed with reference to the clinical implications, strengths and limitations of the methodology and directions for future research.

A beacon for information: youth narratives on school-based anxiety prevention

The newly revised 2017-2018 British Columbian high school curriculum, as a prevention education response to a growing concern around children and youths’ mental health, indicates that students will learn the signs and symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression and be able to explain strategies to promote mental well-being (Province of British Columbia, 2016). Youth voices may help in shaping this curriculum objective. This study explores the meaning that five high school students, who were trained to facilitate an anxiety-prevention program, make of the problem of anxiety and prevention through their narratives, applying a narrative methodology and analysis. These youth narratives do not provide a singular explanation, truth or understanding of anxiety; like all narratives, they hold multiple truths. The youth narratives are drawn from the participants’ local experiential knowledge as well as prevailing discourses that shape their understanding. The types of narratives in this inquiry include: i) the quest for problem-free childhoods; ii) the genesis of knowledge; and iii) overcoming giant stigma by connecting. There are implications and considerations pulled from the narratives, including how a prevailing psychologized discourse may obscure contextual factors in making sense of anxiety and prevention. This inquiry may help educators and other professionals to imagine what else could be possible in conceptualizing the problem of anxiety and implementing prevention programs.
