This Diploma Thesis deals with the issues of social and pedagogical work with the minorities. The opening chapters aim to determine the basic theoretical terms and they introduce basic information about some selected national minorities. The core of the practical part of this work describes the processes and specific activities, which can help in integrating pupils, who belong to ethnic minorities, into the educational system. The closing chapters of this Diploma Thesis include an empirical survey, focused on professional orientation and vocational selection among the Roma pupils at the basic school in Obrnice. Attention is drawn to the family influence and the role of school and other institutions operating in this field.

IN ENGLISH This diploma thesis deals with the issue of the rights of national minorities and their application in the inter-war Czechoslovakia. The aim of the diploma thesis is to analyze this question in one particular region. For this purpose I chose a linguistic island surrounded by majority of other languae. Yet I tried to provide a view of as much as possible points of view. This linguistic island should therefore contain a people of surrounding majority who create linguistic minority in observed region. The candidate for the appropriate object exploration is some german linguistic enclave in the middle of czech settlements. Or a region of significant czech minority amid german speaking milieu. As the best option I finally chose so called Wischauer Sprachinsel with a German settlement surrounded by Czech-speaking majority. Since the 19th century, the region began to increase the share of Czech-speaking population, which resulted in matryoshka doll consisting of a minority in a minority, the phenomenon typical for Lands of the Bohemian Crown at this time. However, in order to better explain the issue, I chose to compare the situation in the Wischauer Sprachinsel with another sore point for the Czech ethnographic map. <p>The purpose with this study is to investigate the experiences some adult Romans have of co-operation between Romani parents and school. The study is based on interviews and has been inspired of critical ethnography and hermeneutic theories. What views have the Romani adults and parents on parental co-operation with school? Which strategy do they see as a practical way for improved parental co-operating with school? The study show that the Romani parents who participated in this study do want a very close co-operation and have used strategies of open communication and giving suggestion on how to co-operate with the schools. One of the informants has had the opportunity to give an in-dept interview and this gives an example of a more diversified picture of the Romani parental patterns in relation to school. The adult Ro-mani group that has been interviewed thinks that a close co-operation with school is very im-portant. One suggestion of improvement from the interviewers is teacher-assistans to improve the schools parental co-operation. There where also suggestions that educational efforts of the school is needed for all students and to include knowledge about who the Romani people are and about their history, culture and language. Some of the parents even showed examples of giving suggestions to teachers to increase the contact by writing in a dairy for each student. The parents in this study also reports of institutionalized antigypsyism and discrimination. In that view the in-dept interview gives an explanation to why the co-operation is believed to be so crucial. There is a fear that the public authorities in somewhat way would hurt the Romani children.</p>

Att möta fördomar : En kvalitativ studie om några finska och utomnordiska romers upplevelser på bostads- och arbetsmarknadenLjungqvist, Jonna, Filhm, Karin January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this study has been to examine how a few members of the Finnish and non- Scandinavian Romani subgroups experience their own, and their groups, situation on the Housing- and Labour Market. We´ve studied our respondents’ experiences of discrimination, which difficulties they think there are, what strategies can be used to deal with these difficulties and also their own ideas on how to improve the situation for the Romani people in the Swedish society. This has been done by six individual structured interviews which have been analyzed with concepts from Symbolic Interactionism, including Goffman’s Dramaturgical Role Theory, definition of Stigma and Kelly’s theory of Personal Constructions. Our results show that the respondents either have been victims of discrimination themselves, or have family/friends that have, which has led to adjustments to the expectations of how an employee or a houseguest should be. Our respondents believe that difficulties getting/keeping a job/house are a result of prejudice towards the Romani people and the main strategy that can be used is hiding their ethnic identity on these arenas. Ideas for improvement include members of the majority population and Romanies working together long term to develop knowledge about the Romani people.

Jak se (ne)dělá autonomie: činnost Hnutí autonomie Slezska na půdě polského parlamentu / (Not)Making Autonomy: Activities of Silesian Autonomy Movement on the Platform of the Polish ParliamentHamatová, Kateřina January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on activities of the Silesian Autonomy Movement (RAŚ) on the platform on the Polish Parliament, while using theoretical concepts advocacy coalition and agenda setting. In the first part of my thesis, I will define goals of RAŚ and identify three most important ones, which will create the core of my research: Silesian language statute, minority statute of Silesians and problem of Upper Silesian autonomy. Then, I will define political subsystems, which reflect the three already mentioned main topics. Within each political subsystem, I will define two competing advocacy coalitions. In the next chapter I will analyse respective political subsystems and discussions, which is taking place among competing advocacy coalitions. I will stress the importance on the process of policy agenda setting. As a parameter of success I will seek for the existence of legislative proposals, proposed by advocacy coalitions. Then, I will analyse processes within respective political subsystems since 2005. In the final part of my thesis, I will strive to answer my research questions and compare the results with my hypotheses. Thanks to my research, I will be able to better understand activities of RAŚ, and of advocacy coalitions respectively, on national level.

Questioning Multiculturalism: Indigenous Nations and Canadian LawMegeney, Krista 03 January 2024 (has links)
I evaluate Will Kymlicka’s theory of multiculturalism in Multicultural Citizenship: A Liberal Theory of Minority Rights, and how it accounts for Indigenous nations in Canada. I ask whether any failures of multiculturalism can be attributed to either the normative or descriptive claims of his theory. I find points of failure in both claims, depending on the theme in question.
Chapter 1 introduces the project and outlines subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 presents an account of Kymlicka’s multiculturalism (including why I chose Kymlicka’s framework as my focus) and the guiding questions of the thesis. Chapter 3 presents major legislation, policy, and jurisprudence in Canada concerning Indigenous nations and multiculturalism in practice. Chapter 4 examines four major claims or themes found in Chapter 2 against the material in Chapter 3: citizenship in Indigenous nations; the characterization of treaties; exercising group-differentiated rights, and; the Canadian state’s exercise of authority over Indigenous nations.

This theses focuses on the issue of study of foreigners from formal Soviet Union in the Czech Republic. The goal of this work is to analyse and evaluate steps on the student's journey from initial idea to study in the Czech Republic, through main obstacles that need to be overcome in the process to basic requirements and necessities that need to be fulfilled. These issues were analyzed in eight connected chapters, six theoretical and two practical. Results of the practical part uncover the most problematic areas a foreign student encounters during the study at the college in the Czech Republic. The paper also includes suggested solutions to these problems.

This diploma thesis deals with the political participation of national minorities in the Czech Republic. The main aim of this thesis is to find out what the possibilities of national minorities are to enter the political process in order to articulate their specific minority interests and how effective these possibilities are from their perspective. The emphasis is placed on ethnic political parties, minority interest groups, advisory bodies such as the Government Council for National Minorities and committees for national minorities at all political levels. At the same time, these selected minority institutions and bodies are also examined at the international level, which makes it possible to gain an overview of the attitudes of some states to national minority policy and their comparison, or even inspiration for the Czech Republic. The analysis was carried out on a group of five national minorities: German, Polish, Roma, Slovak and Vietnamese. The author also tried to find out how these selected national minorities are politically active, what factors influence their political participation and what is the interest in the issue of national minorities among the majority political parties.
