A imprensa e a sociedade de informação: a disputa de poder nas sociedades em rede / The media and the information society: the power struggle in networked societies

Primi, Lilian 07 October 2016 (has links)
(IN COSTA E SILVA, 2013). / The idea is to analyze data about important events of the information history from industrial companies in the last decade of the 20th century until the consolidation of the global information network, with the popularization of mobile devices and the appearance of social medias in the first half of the 21 century, to understand the role of media and communication in the power struggle that exists in information societies, as defined by Castells: a \'multidimensional process \"[...]\" associated with the emergence of a new technological paradigm based on communication and information technologies, which began to take shape in the 1960s and have spread randomly around the world. I use mostly the concepts that guided Castells´ studies, that society is giving shape to technology according to the needs, values, and the taste of people who use it. (Castells, 2005). And, also, from the discovery that in this process occurred a growing and persistent ideologisation of the technology: according to Alvaro Vieira Pinto, there was an increase of undertaken discoveries and advances in the core countries \"to the only valid technology post, able to lead the human being to build a happy life for all. \" (IN COSTA E SILVA, 2013). This study aims to build a theoretical framework that guides the use of network measurement tools developed in the early years of this century to measure the gathering of public opinion in social medias through press media analysis during election periods before the consolidation of networked societies. The reason of this measurement is to check the existence of the polarization that frames human evolution (Dawkins) and social evolution (Castells) in pre-web media content, which is evident is social medias, and assess the role of comunication vehicles in the presidential run between those two moments.

On the threshold of the network society? A study of the public discourse prior to two merger situations separated in time / Är nätverkssamhället här?

Eick, Christian, Nordvall, Thomas January 2001 (has links)

The claims that we have entered a new society, with a new typeof business logic and view on business relationships, are becoming more and more commonplace. In this context it seems appropriate to try and detect signals of change in societal behavior, possibly indicating a transition from one society to another. This essay deals with this very issue. By means of an analysis of the public discourses in 1993 and 1999 respectively, the authors try to establish evidence for or against such a societal shift. The analysis is focused on the discourse, as it was conveyed in the business press, surrounding two separate merger propositions, both including Volvo as one of the parties involved. The results indicate a societal change, albeit a moderate one. Also, no fundamental change in business logic could be detected. This would suggest that the hype around the New Economy might be just that, a hype.

Nina på nätet : En netnografisk studie av politisk kommunikation i de sociala medierna / Nina on the Web

Kvicklund, David, Samuelsson, David January 2010 (has links)

The Swedish election year of 2010 has just begun and the political actors are mobilizing their communication efforts to win the votes of the public. The political campaigns of 2010 have the potential to be the first where a new channel for political communication has the potential to make a difference – the social media. This paper aims to describe in what ways a Member of Parliament, Nina Larsson (FP), together with the PR-agency Hello Clarice are using social media to conduct political campaigning on the web. It also aims to study if the professional consultants of Hello Clarice have any influence over Nina Larsson’s political communication.

The theoretical framework which is the base for this study are theories of an extended public sphere in the age of mediation. The information age has created new forms of interaction between humans over geographical distance which also is a key starting-point in Manuel Castells theories of the network society. This theory is therefore a theoretical foundation of this paper. The paper also uses theories of political communication and the idea of the professionalization of political communication. The research was conducted with a netnographic approach with observational studies of Nina Larsson’s two blogs and her activities on the social network Twitter. As a compliment to the observational studies research has also been conducted trough qualitative interviews with both Nina Larsson and representatives from the PR-agency Hello Clarice.

The results show that Nina Larsson’s political communication has to a degree been affected by the professional consultants of Hello Clarice. The paper has also shown an indication of the potential of social media in use of strategic political communication, in which different channels serve with different purposes.

Karm Togo, Lisa, Backlund, Linn January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to identify the Nordic national destination organizations' digital networks. After analyzing the network and the different platforms the result is used to discuss how we can generalize an optimal utilization of a destination network. Questions that were used for this this were: What does the Nordic countries' national destination organizations digital network look like? And, How has social networking trends influenced the Nordic countries' national destination communication? The theoretical framework that was used for this research was network analysis and the Network Society. Van Dijk's theory about the trends that exist in today's networked society was specifically used as base for this research. With the tourism industry and its digital network as a subject, it was also relevant to take into account the industry conditions and what is advocated within strategic communication for social media. The method used to conduct the study is quantitative network analysis and content analysis. The study showed that the Nordic national destination network society organizations follow the trends in many ways, but there is capacity to develop it even more. They consciously use user-generated content, converse and use visual content for expression. The networks could have a higher density and/or develop the idea of ”personalization” more. The concentration of selected channels, includes the popular "Big Three" - Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The Nordic countries are well placed to be at the forefront of the online communication as the Internet is widely used in all the Nordic countries, which generate a high Internet awareness in these countries. Despite this, there is not a clear picture of the organization using their digital network optimally. The variations of how the organizations use their networks shows that all of the countries can find opportunities for even more progress.

A COMUNICAÇÃO MERCADOLÓGICA NA SOCIEDADE EM REDE: apropriação da cultura participativa pela publicidade / The marketing communication in the network society: ownership of participatory culture by advertising

No. of bitstreams: 1 JORGE VAN DAL.pdf: 806217 bytes, checksum: f298e1b536452fcce562ef0f392ef02a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-04-15 / The advertising market is experiencing a major transformation in a short time and has had to learn to deal with an audience that act and interact with brands, and more than a means of communication, seeking ways of relating. Becomes extremely important to reflect on the most appropriate forms of advertising that are relevant to this new scenario. This work aims to understand how advertising is appropriating the participatory culture in socio-technical context of the network society. For this method was used as the literature and case study of campaign by Stella Artois beer, called The King of Cannes. It was noticed that the said campaign reinforces participatory advertising, unlike traditional interruption-based advertising. This case exemplifies the possible changes in advertising practices that must go hand in technological expansion, the convergence of media and the relationship with the consumer public, taking into account the practical access mediated communication technologies that enable consumer relations and exchanges with organizations in the cyberspace environment.

Ideological Misinformation: How News Corp Australia amplifies the discourses of the reactionary right

Gallagher, Dean January 2019 (has links)
This paper analyses the interactions between Australian mainstream media and social media political influencers and how these interactions amplify ideological misinformation. Social media, particularly YouTube, is increasingly a primary source of news and information for people, principally in the younger 18 – 35-year demographic. Yet while social media has opened up horizontal networks of mass self-communication that allow anyone with an internet to communicate on a mass scale, it has also precipitated a significant rise in the dissemination of reactionary right and extremist messages. The analysis is embedded in Manuel Castells network society theory and utilising Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework and José van Dijck’s combination of the Network Society theory with Actor Network Theory. By analysing the discourses employed by News Corp around notions of “identity politics” “western civilisation” and “the left”, this paper argues that the discourses of News Corp Australia are largely the same as the Alternative Influence Network (AIN) on YouTube – a loosely connected group of reactionary right-wing influencers. It further analyses the way News Corp reports on these influencers, concluding that the intertwining discursive patterns of both News Corp and the AIN have the effect of discriminating against a range of minority groups due to its centring of white, western identity as default. News Corp produces and amplifies ideological misinformation through both power and counterpower communication networks. This is concerning considering News Corp’s prominence and influence in the Australian media landscape. Finally, it argues that the ideological misinformation amplified by News Corp Australia is contributing to a new ideological paradigm that combines populist nationalism with neoliberalism.

Cosmopolitan Divide? : Examining the Tension Field Between Media, Residential Patterns and Cosmopolitan Attitudes

Lindell, Johan January 2009 (has links)
Today, global media such as the Internet provides media audiences scattered across the globe with the possibility of cross-cultural moral interaction upon a plethora of global digital public spheres. Such trends have been the catalyst for increased academic attention to the field of media and morality and the notion of media audiences as global citizens – ‘cosmopolitans at home’, consuming a wide array of mediated, global images and thus enforcing a proximity with the ‘distant Other’. Parallel to such trends is the dichotomous relationship between rural- and urban areas that have emerged as increasingly ambivalent in ‘network society’. Due to the ‘urbanization of media culture’ and the ‘digital divide’, it is argued that rural areas, in an era characterized by global interconnectedness, are rendered dysfunctional. On the other hand however, media can be argued to promote inclusion and new possibilities for rural people. This study set out to empirically examine the tension field between residential patterns (rural/urban), the media (Internet) and cosmopolitanism. Setting out from the research questions: (1) What variables determine a ‘cosmopolitan outlook’ in Sweden?, (2) Does media use/access promote a ‘cosmopolitan outlook’, and under what circumstances?, and (3) Is there a ‘cosmopolitan divide’ between different residential patterns – and if so: how does it relate to different patterns of media use and access?. To attend the research questions, data from the annual national survey, Riks-SOM 2008, was analysed and the findings indicated the general trends for the Swedish cosmopolitan was, in accordance with other empirical accounts, young and well educated. Furthermore, respondents ‘high’ on Internet use where more likely to be cosmopolitans – confirming theoretical accounts of e.g. Anthony Giddens, Ulrich Beck and Dick Hebdige. Also, ‘locality’ proved to be more important for rural people than for people living in metropolitan areas. Finally, men and women displayed different ‘cosmopolitan patterns’: rural women being more cosmopolitan than metropolitan women in terms of a ‘willingness to move to a country outside of Europe’ while men displayed the opposite, following the hypothesis.
